LILITH #1: MARY LOU LORD "HAD A PASSPORT OUT OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD" 1 of 3 Hey Folks! After a couple of days I decided to post it on jinglejangle, sorry if some of you already recieved it from other lists... This is seriously long, so you prolly don't want to read it, I kinda wrote it for my own memory, but it was/is fun typing this out and pretending someone else will read it... I've separated my "review" into 3 parts, in chronological order, [or my best attempt at one]. NB: This "review" has been written over a course of 4 days and since I write in a semi-train-of-thought kinda way, I really hope you understand it :D I'm sorry if I've made any mistakes w/ the set lists, etc. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions, etc., especially if you were there on Sunday! <------------------enjoy!------------------> FUMBLERS & RUMBLING... Just wanted to tell you what I thought of Sunday, three to six days later...It was an awesome experience, especially attending my very first Fumble Rumble...I must say that I was really intimadated, seemed like a lot of people knew each other...and being one of the last to show up with my friend sucked, and sitting over there at our little anti-social table was weird...anyway..........you're all cool people and I'm happy be able to tell people that I've been to a Fumble Rumble! ...wish I had the chance to get to know all of you better, kinda felt out of the loop [being in the crappy seats and all] but hopefully next time... :D MARY LOU LORD "HAD A PASSPORT OUT OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD"... The highlight of the day for me was prolly Mary Lou Lord...I know what most of you are thinking "Mary Lou Lord?!?!?!?!?"...yeah I know both Chantal and Sarah were there and you're thinking Mary Lou Lord was the highlight of my day? I just thought it was cool that I recognized her. During Eden's set I remembered Believer Mel telling me that MLL is the type of artist who'd prolly watch the other performers and walk around the villiage, especially since Sunday was her first Lilith date...the second I remembered, I turned around and guess who was standing no more than 3 metres away from me but Mary Lou Lord. It was all very surreal, [if that's the word] but the hair was a dead giveaway, who else's blonde hair gets up so high? She was really nice, perhaps surprised or even scared that someone in Toronto recognized her...well I'm hoping it wasn't a bitch look on her face. Anyway, she was really nice and said that she wasn't planning on touring too much in the next couple of months b/c she was going to have a baby, that's when I looked down and noticed that yes indeed she's pregnant...that's just about how observant I am, and yes I was embarassed...but I congratulated her and walked away with a photo, no autograph but how could I complain, she was supernice, I just hope she doesn't think I'm some idiot, I have no control of what comes out of my mouth... Anyway, her set was great I was up in the front with a couple a few of my friends who had never heard of her before and they really liked her, I think they most enjoyed "She Had You"...I don't really care too much for the song off the album ["Got No Shadow"] but hearing it live is cool, MLL's so cute...I loved the "She never made it, she's selling Avon" line, it was great, she made the audience laugh with this one...She even took requests! The funniest part was when she forgot the words to "His ND World", and couldn't stop laughing, a couple of girls had to shout the line out for her... Here's Mary Lou Lord's setlist: "I'm Talking to You" "Western Union Desperate" "Hard Road" by Lucinda Williams "She Had You" "He'd Be a Diamond" "His ND World" "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" "Some Jingle Jangle Morning" Mary Lou didn't play "Throng Of Blowtown" like I hoped she would but at least she played my favourite "Western Union Desperate" so I was happy... ~Andrea! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICQ: 10294764 AOL IM: TheAndyC "Kiss goodbye to summer skies, Hollywood and Malibu tides, through thick and thin, you've got a good friend in me" - -Mary Lou Lord ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1998 12:42:47 -0400 From: "Andrea " Subject: [MLL] Fw: T.O. LILITH #3: NATALIE AND SARAH! 3 of 3 NATALIE I was really looking forward to seeing Natalie because I've heard so many intriguing things about her. That and the fact that I love both her albums. So anyway, the show... I was waiting in between Paula and Sarah's set at the snack bar/washroom area around the Tower Records booth when I heard cheering and the first few bars of "Wonder". I was torn between waiting for my friends and seeing Natalie, natually I ditched them folks waiting for the washroom and ran back to my seat...I love that song and I thought it was wicked. I know a lot of people don't really like Natalie's style, because it's somewhat mellow and perhaps "weird", but I love her, especially live! "Life Is Sweet" followed "Wonder" and she cried at the end of it. I think that's when she did the dinosaur and rabbit imitation combo to cheer herself up. Natalie really was spectacular in my opinion, definelty a very different performer from Sarah and Chantal, she's got the eerie thing to her..."Ophelia" would be a great example, was that just me or was that scary? Then again, Tori Amos kinda scares the crap outta me...so anyway, fast forward to the last song, and like expected Sarah came out to sing "Kind And Generous" with Natalie. It was great, Sarah got to swing on the swing, yadda, yadda, yadda...I don't really remember, but there may have been some of the other performers out there too...[It's now Friday, as I type this and my memory is fogging up...] it's quite possible that Chantal and some 2nd/Village Stagers were singing along up on stage...whatever the case, I really enjoyed it... Here's Natalie Merchant's Setlist [I think]: "Wonder" "Life Is Sweet" "King Of May" "Jealousy" "Ophelia" "Break Your Heart" "Carnival" "Kind And Generous" SARAH THE GREAT...! Minutes after Natalie left the stage with her own finale, was the moment most of the 16 000 fans were waiting for...Sarah McLachlan!!! Finally people stood up as Last Dance came on and the first beeps of "Sweet Surrender" came on...Despite the fact that it was totally overplayed on the radio, I love the song more everytime I hear it. Maybe it's because I hated it when it first came out and never listened to it being overplayed...so...right after "SS" was Fumbler favourite "Witness"...we proudly waved our glowsticks during the chorus...I must admit it was my first time with a light stick...green baby! After "Witness" followed a number of songs, which I can't quite remember the order of...I loved "Ice Cream" because I got to sing along with Sarah, not that I didn't before, it's just this time, everyone else was singing so no one had to suffer thru my voice only...Sarah's great!!! Aaahhhh how I want to return in time back to Sunday! Sarah introduced Paula Cole for a collaboration of "Elsewhere", but Paula didn't show up on stage, something about getting a massage or something...? I dunno, I was glad b/c I think Sarah does it soooo much better, but that's just what I think...so she ended up doing it great, as expected. It's my favourite Sarah song :D...sometime during the set, Emmylou Harris came on stage to perform "Angel" with Sarah. I don't really know too much about Emmylou and I understand that she's important to Sarah and Lilith, etc. but I really didn't like her voice. *Plus* she screwed up the words...it's "straight line" not "straight life" oh well...like I said before, Sarah's stuff is so much better when Sarah sings it...it woulda been awesome if Chantal played the piano for "Angel" or something, boy can that girl play...! One of the main highlights was probably the finale with Sarah and the gang. Strangely enough, I don't think Paula Cole showed up for that either...Mary Lou Lord wasn't there either, but she was probably on her way outta there to the next city or something. Or maybe she was just tired, ya know being pregnant and all...I would have liked to see her on stage tho, but what can ya do? The girls of course sang "What's Going On" together, kind of a pump up song, but I don't really remember how it goes right now. If you've been to Lilith this year, you'll probably know it :D. This collaboration was a lot better than Chantal's "Leaving On A Jet Plane"...I think it was Liz Phair and Sarah who sang together, and I didn't like how their voices mixed...the generally dumb audience didn't sing along either...but don't get me wrong, I'm not a bitter, angry person, I had an absolute blast... NB: It'd kinda depressing waving your glowstick in section 408 looking down and seeing a clump of them down in section 100...how do you Fumblers style seats like those everytime? Sarah McLachlan's Setlist [I think, but I know it's totally wrong]: "Last Dance" "Sweet Surrender" "Witness" "Angel" "Building A Mystery" "Ice Cream" "Elsewhere" "Black And White" "Possession" "Adia" "What's Going On" Hello's to all the cool folks I had the privlidge of meeting: Fumbler Rannie, Fumbler Marnie, Fumbler Frank, Fumbler Kathryn [and her friends], Fumbler Heather, Fumbler Heidi, Fumbler Gregs, Fumbler Gemma, Fumbler A.J., Fumbler Julian, Fumbler Thomas, Fumbler Edward, Fumbler-Believer Tanja, Fumbler-Believer Attila, Believer-Fumbler Dana, Believer Chris and everyone else that I met b/c I know I've forgotten people! Without those glowsticks and tags, I would never had as much fun as I did that day! ~Andrea! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICQ: 10294764 AOL IM: TheAndyC "Kiss goodbye to summer skies, Hollywood and Malibu tides, through thick and thin, you've got a good friend in me" - -Mary Lou Lord ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1998 12:42:25 -0400 From: "Andrea " Subject: [MLL] Fw: T.O. LILITH #2: CHANTAL IS UN-BELIEVEABLE 2 of 3 CHANTAL IS UN-BELIEVEABLE...! I didn't get a chance to meet Mary Lou after the set at the Tower booth because guess who started playing less than a minute later on the main stage, but Chantal Kreviazuk, I didn't even get back to my seat until half way through Co-Dependent. It was my first time seeing Chantal with a band and I must say that I didn't like it too much...perhaps I'm used to hearing just her piano and vocals but seriously, what's up with the drums in "Surrounded", the album cut wasn't even that lively...it prolly wasn't that bad, because everyone I talked to thought she was "amazing" and anyway, I thought Co-Dependent was awesome with the band and a fine starter ["And I-I-I-I-I should end it, but I-I-I-I-I defend it..."] God ya gotta love singing to that one eh? Here's Chantal Kreviazuk's setlist: "Co-Dependent" "Don't Be Good" "Grace" "Until We Die" "God Made Me" "Surrounded" "Wayne" "Leaving On A Jet Plane" "Until We Die" is a totally new song to me, but I thought it was great...maybe it's because it didn't have that band playing with her, lucky for us "The Big Butt Band" left Chantal and her big black piano alone and let them take over. According to Chantal it's a song about long distance relationships I guess, about talking on the phone, etc...I thought it was beautiful, perhaps a track for the new record? Ah...there's something nice to think about...*sigh* a new album...um, anyway besides "Surrounded" being unusually bad [in ***MY*** opinion, other's loved it, perhaps I have really high standards], Chantal was hilarious...after she finished with "Surrounded", she began talking about "Wayne" and then stopped or something b/c she said that she didn't want to copy Sarah in explaining what her songs meant and that now Sarah would come beat her up or something...I didn't really catch all of it. It was all pretty funny and you could tell she was really nervous, like she had told us many times previous 'cause she talked really fast...so she decided to be quiet and just play the song. About 15 seconds into the piano intro she stopped and realized that she was playing "Surrounded" again...poor girl was so embarrassed, she ran off the stage. It was all in fun of course, Chantal came back, took a bow and re-attempted to play "Wayne"...that of course was wonderful, I don't actually remember the band so it couldn't have been that bad...after "Wayne", came the finale we all knew was coming. Sarah and a couple other chicks from the 2nd and Village Stage came on to accompany Chantal in singing "Leaving On A Jet Plane"...I had fun singing along to it and I wanted to get up and boogy, but we had old boring foggys who liked to sit, in our section [that's what you get for buying freakin section 408 tickets]...I really liked Sarah's light purple dress, and Chantal looked wicked too...[although my mother has a dress kinda similar to it, and yes, I'm sure you needed to know that...] The best part of Chantal's set? My favourite song "Grace" and "Until We Die" was great, but for some reason the title keeps on reminding me of Sheryl Crow's "Tomorrow Never Dies", and that bothers me...no offence to Sheryl Crow fans...it's just that one song really... BELIEVER BASH-'ETTE'... After Chantal's set, I was walking towards the painfully over priced snack bar with my friends, when the dumbass in me remembered that the Tower Records signing booth existed! I had talked to the guy there earlier and asked who would come and he did tell me that Chantal was a likely guest so I moseyed on over and found a good sized line. I was near the end, but it didn't take too long for Chantal to get through the line, at least it didn't seem like that, I was waiting alone because my friends are dumb and felt they had to eat and minor stuff like that...Sure I missed all of Paula's set, but do I care? Hell no...When it was almost my turn, I spotted Believer-Fumbler Tanja, Believer-Fumbler Dana, Believer- Fumbler Attila, Believer Chris, Fumbler Gemma and others to the side. Chantal was really cool when it was finally my turn, [honestly, all of Sunday is pretty much a daze, the important parts anyway,] I don't remember saying much to her, just "Hi" and I know she recognized me from Wonderland 'cuz she asked "How are you", in that I-know-you-from-somewhere kinda way...so I asked her how she enjoyed the Birthday Book, her reply "It's great, I read it...often"...give or take a word. Yeah, "read it often", sure she does...ah well...[sorry I forgot to say "Hi" to Christina for you Mel, really I am...] This time I brought an automatic disposable camera with a flash for my photo with Chantal, I'd like to see what exactly ruins this photo with her for me. [The last two I've had with her have been absolute crap...literally...ask anyone who's seen either of them...one's totally out of focus, the other one is too dark to make either of us recognizable...a word of advice to y'all, always buy the disposable camera with the flash, I know it's $5 bucks more, but boy will it make you happier. I swear if this one doesn't work, I just might paste my head next to a random photo of hers]...so after my little minute meeting with the one and only Chantal, I went over a couple steps to the little Believer/Fumbler clan that had assembled. I guess the tags and laminated paper paid off, 'cuz we weren't asked to leave. It was pretty cool, after Chantal had finished signing all the autographs, she came and took a group shot with all the Believers and I think some Fumblers. Definetly something I'll try to get on-line, if someone doesn't beat me to it. It'll definetly put some names to faces :D So Chantal left, but still within view of all of us and the whole Kreviazuk family got together for a family portrait by the lake...and that was the Believer Bash @ Toronto Lilith '98! ~Andrea! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICQ: 10294764 AOL IM: TheAndyC "Kiss goodbye to summer skies, Hollywood and Malibu tides, through thick and thin, you've got a good friend in me" - -Mary Lou Lord ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1998 14:44:55 -0400 (EDT) From: Rachel Kramer Bussel Subject: [MLL] Women in Rock E*Zine - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1998 08:39:34 -0400 (EDT) From: owner-jinglejangle@smoe.org To: owner-jinglejangle@smoe.org Subject: BOUNCE jinglejangle@smoe.org: Admin request of type /\bsubscribe\b/i at line 7 To: jinglejangle@smoe.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: Woman In Rock E~Zine My friend has an online zine' done through e~mail called ~*cHiCk'S rOcK*~ which is dedicated to female musicians! HOLIDAY SONGS & LULLABIES Just in time for the holiday season, Columbia Recording artist Shawn Colvin is following up her Grammy-winning platinum-certified A Few Small Repairs album with Holiday Songs & Lullabies, a collection of all-new seasonal holiday classics and traditional children's lullabies. The album will be in stores on October 13. Shawn, who just became a first-time mother with the birth of her daughter Caledonia Jean-Marie in July, recorded Holiday Songs & Lullabies this past June, while she was 8-1/2 months pregnant. The inspiration for this project came from "Lullabies & Night Songs," a book of lullabies, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, which was given to Shawn by her parents when she was eight and which she cherished throughout her childhood. Last year, as Shawn recorded "All Through The Night" (which also appears on Holiday Songs & Lullabies) for Carnival, a various artists benefit album put together by Sting for the Rainforest Foundation International, she discovered that her keyboard player, Doug Petty, had a similar experience with the book when he was growing up. The pair felt compelled to make an album based on the songs n the book and also on their mutual love of seasonal music. Shawn's own memories of the Colvin family singing Christmas carols in four-part harmony in the car all year-round provided a warm touchstone for the recording of this album. Produced by Petty, Holiday Songs & Lullabies is an album that captures the sublime wonder and promise of childhood. The 14 songs -- "In The Bleak Mid-Winter," "Christmas Time Is Here," "Now The Day Is Over," "Rocking," "Windy Nights," "All Through The Night," "Love Came Down At Christmas," "Silent Night," "All The Pretty Li'l Horses," "Little Road To Bethlehem," "Seal Lullaby," "Evening Is A Little Boy/The Night Will Never Stay," "The Christ Child's Lullaby," and "Close Your Eyes" -- shimmer with elegant simplicity and the spirit of the season. Artwork for Holiday Songs & Lullabies includes some of Maurice Sendak's illustrations from "Lullabies & Night Songs," which Sendak graciously allowed to be used for this release after receiving a personal letter from Shawn Colvin. Harper Collins plans to rerelease "Lullabies & Night Songs" in time for Christmas 1999. Holiday Songs & Lullabies arrives in the middle of the most successful period of Shawn Colvin's remarkable career. Her last album, A Few Small Repairs earned two Grammys -- Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Sunny Came Home," produced and cowritten by John Leventhal -- and generated Shawn's first RIAA platinum record award. Shawn Colvin will perform four solo shows in October: October 11 Mesa, Arizona Chandler Open Air Center October 28 Atlanta, Georgia Robert Ferst Theater October 29 Pompano Beach, Florida Pompano Beach Amphitheater October 30 Orlando, Florida House Of Blues - ----------------------------- http://www.shawncolvin.com - ----------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 01:23:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Rachel Kramer Bussel Subject: [MLL] Elliott Smith tour dates This message is in MIME format.
