I'll have to go upstairs and find the mail order info in a second. In the meantime, though, I wanted to ask: How many of the people on this list started out with the "old" Mary Lou, versus how many of you first heard her on Got No Shadow? How many of you still only have Got No Shadow? Because I was thinking about this the other day, and, being completely honest with myself, I would not have subscribed to this mailing list based on its merits. And now: Kill Rock Stars 120 NE State #418 Olympia WA 98501 Mary Lou's brilliant self-titled, eight-song EP [KRS 238] costs $6 U.S. on EP and $8 on CD (it has the original electric version of "Lights Are Changing" and is otherwise acoustic). The "Some Jingle Jangle Morning" b/w "Western Union Desperate" 7" single [KRS 217] (punked-up versions of the two songs plus an acoustic "WUD") costs $3 U.S. She also has a track on two KRS compilations: "Camdentown Rain" on Stars Kill Rock [KRS 207, LP $7 / CD $10] and "Eternal Circle" on A Slice of Lemon [Lookout! / KRS 100 double LP/CD $12]. Camdentown Rain being the first song i heard by her. After that i went straight to the kill rock stars catalog and ordered everything else by her. then i got got no shadow when it came out. then i went and saw her live. but yes, i did start out with the "old" mary lou. <3 Lisa - --part0_902617658_boundary-- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Aug 1998 19:48:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Rachel Kramer Bussel Subject: [MLL] How I got into Mary Lou Well, I honestly haven't known about Mary Lou's music for all that long...around November or December of 1996 I got the compilation "Safe and Sound" which is a Boston-area bands/singers benefit for women's health clinics and shelters. And track 10 was this song "Polaroids" by this woman with this incredibly sweet and beautiful voice and I played it over and over again. At the time I wasn't as into indie kindof music and mostly shopped at Tower and hadn't discovered the bevy of tiny but cool independent music stores in NYC. I looked for stuff by "Mary Lou Lord" at Tower but didn't find much and made myself a mix tape before heading off on a trip to Israel for 2 weeks. When I got back I tried looking up stuff on her on the web and didn't see too much, but then finally I found the self-titled album and really fell in love with her music. Then around that time someone emailed me that she had a new album out (Martian Saints!) so I ordered that from CD Now. Then I started seeing tidbits about her here and there and finding other MLL fans on the Internet and finally decided to take the plunge and start my website around last March ('97) and it's grown from there. I met various people who are friends with her over the past 2 years and finally met her last year in September. Seems like ages and ages ago, like her music's been part of my life forever. But I too highly recommend the Kill Rock Stars releases. All of the Kill Rock Stars compilations have cool stuff on them - - one of 'em (I forget which one) has Kathleen Hanna doing that Ben Lee song "I Wish I Was Him" in this perfect snotty, sarcastic tone. Also, if anyone from this list is going to Elliott Smith's show at Maxwell's and wants to meet up beforehand, email me. I'm supposed to meet up with this girl Stacey from the Elliott Smith list but I'm not sure where yet. If Maxwell's has it's liquor license by then, then we'll meet at the bar. Otherwise, I'd feel kindof silly sitting at the bar drinking a diet Coke. And in non-MLL news, I must highly recommend Sarge's new album _The Glass Intact_ - I don't have some exact comparison, but if you like both Velocity Girl and Sleater-Kinney, or any bands that are anywhere in between the two, I think you'd like them. :) Rachel "I said you can lie to me I own what's inside of me and nothing surprises me anymore" -- shawn colvin, "polaroids" "wish you'd believe me he's not all he seems to be his eyes burn hot enough but hold less warmth than you think" -- sarge, "charms and feigns" ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V1 #158 **********************************
