Hey all -- So I'm poking around in a huge bin of .50 cent CD's yesterday, mostly discarded promos and discs missing art, scratched, etc. but there were several Matador, Sub Pop, etc. promos amid the crap. One of the discs was "Got No Shadow," with no label and very basic graphics (just the song titles and the WORK logo). I figure for .50 cents I'll pick it up and maybe there'll be some interesting variations in the mix. And how! I put the disc in last night and when it got to "Western Union Desperate," my jaw dropped as this BLAST of guitar came out of the stereo and an absolutely ROCKING, totally different take of the song emerged. I suppose I should mention that I am not a big fan of the regular "Got No Shadow" version, especially the lame-o guitar solo as compared to the original 7" recording. This version kicks ass! Mary Lou's vocal is heavily filtered, there are explosive drum fills, a much-improved guitar solo, even a pick scrape at the end. It sounds more like the album "Jingle Jangle Morning" than anything else. Anyway, that's not the only difference...the tracklist is shuffled all around and there's no "Shake Sugaree." All of the other tracks are the same take as the released album versions, but with variations in the mix. Here's a few of them: "His Lamest Flame": no discernable difference. "Western Union Desperate": totally different, 'rock' take. "Throng Of Blowtown": effects (chamberlin?) much higher in mix; comes across as slightly more 'ghostly'. "Lights Are Changing": the major differences are an extra instrument (Hammond organ?) that drifts in and out of the mix, and the 'Byrds' solo is not in there! You can hear the other 'under' guitar solo (Nick's, I presume) but not the main solo. The 'organ' may also be a different guitar with heavy chorus effects because you can hear it faintly on the album version, here it's just more obvious. There are subtle differences in the arpeggiating guitar and noodling over the last chorus too, which leads me to believe this mix does not include Roger McGuinn at all. It has a nice, 'rougher' quality than the released mix, and sounds more like a group effort/jam. "Seven Sisters": no discernable difference, maybe some subtle differences in the mix. "The Lucky One": this sounds great. There is a buzzing instrument that sounds like a harmonium throughout, and the pedal steel is mixed much higher. The lead guitar has some nice effects on it and drifts in and out of the mix rather than staying at the same boring level. The buzzing harmonium gives the song a more spontaneous, 'indie' feel than the commercial mix. My first reaction when I heard this was, now *that* is a Rothrock/Schnapf production. It has all the quirkiness and charm of their recordings for Elliott Smith, Beck, etc. "Some Jingle Jangle Morning": some differences in vocals and guitar, and the bass is mixed higher I think. The most obvious difference is that Mary Lou's oo-oo intro is missing! "Down Along The Lea": no discernable difference. "She Had You": no discernable difference, maybe some subtle differences in vocal. "Two Boats": no discernable difference. "Supergun": no discernable difference. "Subway": same take as the album version, and Shawn Colvin sings on it, but it's not as 'smooth'. In fact I would say "Some Jingle Jangle Morning" and this are the only two tracks that were actually improved in the final mix, but it still makes for an interesting listen. You can hear the individual drums so it sounds a little more like a live performance than the virtuoso studio recording we're all accustomed to. My overall impression is that this mix is much closer to Rothrock/Schnapf's vision for the record than the watered-down WORK version. I'm still disappointed that "Got No Shadow" doesn't have the charm and spontaneity of Mary Lou's guitar playing, but the rocking "Western Union," buzzing "Lucky One," etc. are big improvements and give a greater understanding on what Rothrock/Schnapf may have been shooting for. If anyone wants a listen, I'll be more than happy to dub copies for anyone that wants to trade. I'm looking for any radio broadcasts/acoustic performances of A/A- quality, especially the KCRW broadcast from earlier this year. I would also like a dub of "Real," preferably from the actual cassette or low-generation copy. Write me and we'll work something out. ///////WB perfectsound@earthlink.net perfectsound@hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 18:32:23 -0400 From: bliss69@juno.com (Jaymes F Horton) Subject: [MLL] Pace of Change and She Had You I didn't know there was a promo for She Had You out yet! Still, it conflicts with the Loud Family show at the Metro (14th and P Street, DC), which I fully expect to be attending instead. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael J. Great show but way too hot in the club. I will post a fuller review later, have to go see some shows including Kevin's band Raging Teens. I will say a big thanks to Ata for driving and how cool it was that Christophe was there from Paris, and he's on the Belly mailing list, and we saw Tanya Donelly at the show, so that was pretty neat.
