Joseph and Alex get a big thanks from me this week for letting me know about all these shows. I just got my ticket to the Bottom Line, I'm gonna go to both shows - they start at 7:30 and 10:30 and also on the bill is Sonia from Disappear Fear and this cool Philly band Grey Eye Glances, and another performer I don't know. It's a monthly series called Nightbirds which features 4 female acts, mostly singers but sometimes 1 spoken word or dance or whatever, and Bottom Line's a great place - Billy Bragg is playing there July 2 as well. So that should be really fun. I know at least some of you on this list will be there (Cinnamon...) but others (Brian? Ata?) I don't really know. And RustyOrgan, maybe I can finally meet you. So that's the deal. You can get tix at the Bottom Line box office, and the Bottom Line is at West 4th and Mercer, conveniently (for me!) located a block away from where I live. Anyway, I gotta run to work - I don't have Bottom Line's number on me. Also, if anyone tapes her on WFUV I'd *love* a copy - I am almost sure I don't get that station (90.7, it's a very cool folk station and they play people like Dar Williams, Dan Bern, Ani DiFranco, etc.) :) Rachel - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, Jun 4, 1998 4:40 PM From: Zerowork Mary Lou will be playing in New York at The Bottom Line June 18th. It is some sort of special thing the Bottom Line does and she will play two 1/2 hour sets....tickets are sorta expensive - $15, but it is supposed to be a cool thing and WFUV is promoting it, so she will probably also be on the air that day. If you can't afford $15, let me know, we may have some guest list spots - -- don't count on that though, as they will be very limited. Mary Lou will probably be back in July for Intel Fest at the Mercury Lounge, so if you can't see her at the Bottom Line don't fret. She will also be playing a Sweet Relief Benefit in Boston on June 26th at TT the Bears (?).......then she will be in Charleston West Virginia to play something called the Mountain Stage on July 14th with Pete Droge and the Squirrel Nut Zippers. There is a decent chance of more shows in July in the NE and possibly on the West Coast in September..... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 12:34:40 -0400 (EDT) From: "Michael J. It may not be much, but in it there's this feature where you can merge the appearences of various Lillith Fair artists (e.g. Sarah McLachlan and Lisa Loeb, Sinead O'Connor and Jewel). Mary Lou is one of the featured artists on the merge-o-matic. It may not be terribly interesting, but it's good for a few laughs, especially when you combine Mary Lou and Jewel. Ciao, Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 23:04:51 -0400 (EDT) From: Dragon Lady Subject: [MLL] amazon.com review I found this at Amazon.com and there's also a "professional" or whatever official amazon review, but this one should strike a chord with some of you. And I think way back someone on here reviewed the album and the Prince reference went way over my head - it's rattle your DIAMONDS AND PEARLS, eh?...how clever! Oh, and Laura, I will email you soon re: Toronto, I swear, but it's looking less and less likely as my $$ dwindles and I get to see her here but I will figure something out. ;) Rachel from amazon.com: Adam Bartolik (adbar@denver.net) from Denver, Colorado , 04/26/98, rating=10: The best cure for a cold night at Park Street station The only good things about riding the Boston subway are the hot dogs at Government Center and the endless parade of fresh talent performing on the platforms. No matter what sort of day you've had, it's always a welcome sight to see Mary Lou Lord setting up her amplifier. The set on her debut CD puts you right there in the station, passing time while you wait for the train. Most tracks are recorded only with vocals and acoustic guitar, and it conveys the soft simplicity and humor that are most appealing aspects of Lord's presentation. You sometimes make a connection with a live performer who's singing your request, and it comes across well here. A listener can feel that songs like "I'm Talking To You" and "That Kind Of Girl" are being sung only for you, on a warm spring evening at the station, with only a smattering of bystanders tapping toes and dropping a dollar in the guitar case. It's unfamiliar to listen to Mary Lou singing with accompanyment on songs such as "Helsinki," but it's something to adjust to as she gains more recognition as an artist. "Mary Lou Lord" is, at its best, a way for you to remember in five years what this soft voice sounded like before all the deserved attention came her way. Also, if you aren't fortunate enough to see Mary Lou Lord performing under Boston (which she still does regularly), you can always pop this CD in, put on your headphones and feel the warmth in her voice. Just don't get carried away and throw your spare change on an empty platform. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 23:55:03 EDT From: Recordings@aol.com Subject: [MLL] Reverb It was great!! Better to have a copy of this than the promo video any day. Unfortunately I had to use an "old" tape that has a few glitches in it, but I hope to tape the HBO rebroadcast with a brand new videotape. I assume this show was recorded shortly before Mary Lou's "collapse" - you could never tell. She's a consumate professional.
