Lord cancelled the end of her tour supporting her major- label debut album Got No Shadow (Work Group) this past April in order to enter the Musicians Assistance Program in Los Angeles. Now sober, she's taking a break from the road. "I'm really not geared up to go on tour right now," she says. "I had to look at my situation and... just say no." Although Lord has spent the past year clean, her history of alcohol use is well known. Rather than claiming exhaustion or injury, she therefore chose to admit to therapy when abandoning the tour, a lesson learned from friend Shawn Colvin. "I really try to live my life as vigorously honest as I can, and I don't pretend to be anything that I'm not," she says. "I had a role model that I really admired and respected like Shawn to follow regarding sobriety, and it was a good influence on me. If I can inspire somebody to stop drinking or doing drugs and take care of themselves, why hold back the truth?" Lord's Toronto show also marked the return of her solo acoustic set-up. The singer -- best known for subway busking -- had been touring with a full band, but found her unpredictable schedule best suited to a group of one. She will remain solo for her only scheduled summer appearances at eight dates of the Lilith Fair tour. "They asked me to play last year, but I didn't want to be a part of it," she says. "I thought it was silly. Then I thought about it more, and I figured it was a really good thing. They seem like nice people and I could probably learn a lot from these gals. I let myself feel honored and flattered that they wanted me." As to rumors of her pregnancy, Lord responds simply, "I want to have a baby." Apart from the Lilith shows, immediate plans include busking in Boston and preparing for another album. "I want to continue to play, but I also want to start writing more. I found that when I was on tour I didn't do much writing. I'd like to go into the studio in the fall and start working on the second record." - -Liisa Ladouceur _______________________________________________ To get off, please email: remove-allstarmag@list.allstarmag.com To climb on, please email: join-allstarmag@list.allstarmag.com To comment, please email: allstarmag-owner@list.allstarmag.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 15:24:00 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: [MLL] ADMIN: Thanks, and upcoming smoe.org downtime Hello: Let me start by thanking everyone who donated to the smoe.org fund drive. You've raised over $3500 at this point, and I really appreciate your support!!! Earlier this week I ordered the new hardware for smoe.org, which cost $4600 (drop me a note if you're interested in the technical specs on the new gear). It arrived today, and I'm taking a few days off work to get it set up and in production. At some point between Saturday and Tuesday, smoe.org will be shut down to install the new hardware. The downtime will probably be 4-6 hours. During the time we're off-line, mail will be queued up at my ISP so no mail will be lost. I'll send out another announcement once the new gear is online. Thanks again for your help! - -Jeff P.S. If you've been meaning to send in a check, Mike Connell is still accepting donations.
