I check in the magazines for the Seattle Public Library) Mary Lou gets the lead review, as well as an appalling caricature by Jennifer Janesko making Mary Lou look very airbrushed and creepy. Dave Marsh says: Indie Rocker Mary Lou Lord has moved from an alterna-rock label to a major and made a folk-rock album with tunes primarily written by other writers. That's a long reach for someone who started out singing in the Boston subway. But Got No Shadow is an artistic coup. Lord sings sweet but thinks tough, and this album is a personal statement even though she wrote only half the songs. She sounds fragile and reedy, but her producers treat her like a funky Celine Dion. Playboy also has a "Rockmeter" where their five critics rate a few albums on a 10 point scale: Robert Christgau gives her a "8" (so I guess "A-" equals "8") Vic Garbarini gives her a "7" Nelson George gives her a "7" Dave Marsh gives her a "8" and Charles M. Young gives her a "7". She gets a higher overall score than Victoria Williams (but not as high as John Coltrane)! I'm kind of new on the list (been lurking for 1-2 weeks). Anyway, here's an extract from a review of the Van Halen tribute, Everybody Wants Some! A Loose Interpretation Of The Musical Genius Of Van Halen, taken from the May issue of BigO magazine (a Singapore rock mag). It should be online at http://www.asia-online.com/bigo/ on May 15, the magazine should also be available from Tower Records outlets across the world. "... This writer's favourite is Mary Lou Lord's sweet and simple acoustic overhaul of Jump (point of reference: Cowboy Junkies reading Sweet Jane). Lord transforms what is universally accepted as the quintessential stadium anthem into a camp-fire aria perfect for midnight reminiscing. ..." - Douglas Tseng xjh "Rock and roll is here to stay _Thirteen_ Come inside where it's okay" by Big Star The Singapore Bean Asylum: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/5545 ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V1 #81 *********************************
