When I hung out with her back in September, she mentioned the days of wasting all of Sony's money on partying & that she was so glad to be "off that crap" now. It sounds like she saw the possibility of slipping away again & checked herself in...touring must be tough. I wish her the very very best & know she will come out OK. - --Cinnamon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 18:37:03 EDT From: AWeiss4338 Subject: Re: [MLL] difficulties I have even more respect for Mary Lou than I did before after I read what you said. Their are many people who wouldn't see the danger of partiying too much and just get caught up in it, with sometimes tragic results (the most extreme Janus Joplin). But Mary Lou caught herself in time, because she knew how bad things could get and did something about it, which is really cool. I hope this doesn't sound sappy, I just had to say it. Yeah, I've heard touring can be extrememly tough. You make take issue with one of the terms here. Even if her did give her an A minus, I think he's being a little harsh. But I think I understand why he said it. "Only indie perverts would hypeventlate ovwer Lord's breathy voice, which needs every booster jet mind can devise or money can buy. And only indie perverts would object to her long-aborning major label debut, where she gets the help she needs. The production is Amy Rigby-style neotraditionalism, with Roger McGuinn rippling over one flowing serge just to make the concept, and overcoming her fondness for Nick Salomen (Bevis Frond, don't you know anything?), she makes the most of covers from Elizabeth Cotten to Freddy Johnston. Equally impressive, every once in awhile she finds the gumption to eke out a song so winsomely conceived and solidly constructed it belongs in the cannon she adores. Sometimes Saloman even helps-the cowritten lead trackis a hummer worthy of Stuart Musgrove (Belle And Sebastion, don't you know anything at all?)." Make of this what you will.
