I remember playing Mary Lou's self-title about a year ago for a sort of "pop" music friend of mine & she said, "Gosh, she totally reminds of Jewel!" which at first made me very defensive & I basically ranted for about 1/2 hour about Mary Lou being NOTHING like Jewel & that Mary Lou had been doing this sort of thing for a loooooooong time & that ML was "neo-folk" before there was a name for it...blah blah blah. Anyway, when I interviewed Mary Lou last September, I asked her how she felt about being compared to someone like Jewel and she basically stuck up for her saying, "You know, Jewel's been doing her thing for a really really long time. And she works very very hard and she's a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. I know there are similarities and people like to compare...so if that's what they hear...or think...She doesn't really have it that easy." Then, my friend Marty, who was a co-partner in Lilith last year, was telling me a story about being at a movie theatre and hearing some women sitting behind just RAGING on Jewel. Basically saying she was a "c**t" (their word, not mine!) and how she was just a pretty girl working the Marilyn Monroe angle of folk-pop....yadda yadda. And Marty said he turned around and said, "Well, actually, Jewel is a friend of mine. And not only is she NOT a c**t, but she's an incredibly warm, funny, hardworking songwriter and performer." Ang then he said to me, "I just hate it when people judge a person's soul or heart or demeanor by whether or not they like the music." It turns out that this woman in the theatre had never met or spoken with Jewel, but had seen her in some interview where she appeared "pedantic and lame." She already hated her singing. So, basically, I still don't really like her music. And I don't think Mary Lou sounds like her. But, I have respect for Jewel as a songwriter & performer and appreciate that the decisions she has made have never been "easy," but they are in support of her dream. And that IS like Mary Lou. tossing in my 2 cents, - --Cinnamon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 10:59:10 -0500 (EST) From: Senorita Raquelita Subject: [MLL] Elliott Smith tour dates Just when I was telling people there are not official dates, this comes in from Nathan, who runs the Elliott Smith list. I went to Sam Goody last night to see Tara MacLean and picked up a copy of Request (May) and found another letter I wrote about Mary Lou, plus some more scathing anti-Keith Moerer letters about something he wrote comparing Fiona Apple and Ben Folds Five. I think he is not quite the most popular music journalist I've seen. Here's my letter: LORDY, LORDY [their caption] Thank you for featuring Mary Lou Lord in Request (Coast to Coast, March). She looks really wonderful and sounds totally ready to hit it big. Her new album is definitely a joy to listen to. Mary Lou's music always brings me up from a down spell; it makes me smile to hear her sweet voice and heartfelt songs. She deserves attention for her delightful music and way with words, and I applaud you for giving your readers a glimpse into her world. RKB, NYC They also quote part of it at the bottom "MLL deserves attention for her delightful music and way with words." I wrote that b/c I hate seeing tiny blurbs that just vaguely mention her music - if they're gonna say she went out with Kurt why not just list all her old boyfriends, ya know? I liked the Request piece...though I must say, every time I've seen Mary Lou she's been wearing jeans! Also, on the side of my local Tower Records (facing Lafayette bet. 3rd and 4th in NYC), there's a blowup of the cover of GNS, BUT the way they've done it the road behind her is so dark you can't really read her name except for "Mary L.." so hopefully people will stop into the store and listen to the album. :) Rachel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 11:49:13 -0500 (EST) From: Senorita Raquelita Subject: [MLL] from ~MaRiA~ This got bounced to me as a non-subscriber submission - sometimes that happens, I don't really know why. There's a great restaurant here in NYC called Grange Hall, in the Village. I went there on Sunday for brunch (to celebrate my teeny-tiny piece in the NY Times) & sat at the bar. This wonderful little bartender made this completely wonderful-looking drink for someone else at the bar & I asked her what it was. She said she had just "had some fun" and made it up just then. It was Fresh Squeezed OJ, a dash o'cranberry juice, a shot of sparkling soda & vodka (New Yorkers love to DRINK with brunch, by the way!). The OJ, being dense & fresh-squeezed sunk to the bottom of the glass (a big ol'soda fountain thing) and the cranberry just sort of floated on top so it looked like a sunset. It was beautiful & totally yummy. I told her she had to name it. She told me to help her. I gave her 3 choices: 1) A Western Sky (cuz it looked like a sunset and a small tribute to Mark Eitzel) 2) A Sundance (for the festival & the sparkle) 3) A JingleJangle Morning (for Mary Lou & Bob Dylan and for how it made me feel) She liked number 3 best. Go into the Grange on a Sunday at around 12:30, look for the short bartendress with the black curls & ask for a JingleJangle morning.... It was fabulous. - --Cinnamon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 14:18:11 -0500 (EST) From: "Mark Anthony Miazga" Subject: Re: [MLL] Re:other mailing lists (fwd) > >>i was just wondering ... what other mailing lists are people on? i always Tracy Chapman, Heather Nova, Joan Osborne, Ecto, Jewel, Party of Five, Sinead O'Conner, Suzanne Vega, CDnow - -- Mark A.
