Yet it was, Miss Mary Lou, fresh from her stints at the Levi's photo shoot and hosting 120 Minutes. Co-hosting I think, with Scott Weiland. It's supposed to air on April 12. She picked "Coming Up Roses" but I don't know if they're gonna play it. She said probably a fall tour with Elliott, and I guess today she flies back to catch up with the band in Boise. What I'm listening to now: Bangs (w/Maggie Vail) - Tiger Beat Geoff Farina - Usonian Dream Sequence Steve Poltz - One Left Shoe The Vees EP (ex-Jale members) Mary Lou - Bottom of the Hill, 3/23 The Hangovers - Slow Dirty Tears :) rachel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 08:14:54 -0600 (CST) From: Ching-yuan Hu Subject: Re: [MLL] another non-mll thread I'm new on this list...just appeared yesterday, but I figured I'd pop in on this thread: I'm also on the Sarah McLachlan list (I'm a proud Fumbler) as well as the Jewel list (yes, I'm also an EDA). It was rather ironic that someone from the Sarah list posted how to get onto the MLL list yesterday, seeing that I had just found out MLL will be performing in good ol' Iowa City on April 10. I WILL be going. I just need to find out what time the performance starts. They aren't even selling tickets in advance--it's cover at the door, and I'm already getting extremely excited. I bought "Got No Shadow" on a whim, basically. I'd never heard her music before, but had heard her name in relation with possibly touring with the Lilith Fair this summer, so I was interested in hearing what her music was like. I got the cd two weeks ago, and it basically hasn't left my cd player since (except to get transported into my discman, of course). I am curious to see what her stage personality is like--to see how she relates to the audience and all that good stuff. :) Other singers I enjoy listening to: Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Lisa Loeb, Ani DiFranco, Paula Cole, Meredith Brooks, Once Blue, a bunch of Chinese singers, Chantal Kreviazuk, Natalie Imbruglia...and the list goes on, consider I have over 300 cds. :) Is there anyone in the Iowa City area who might go to the MLL concert on 4/10? I've heard that cover will be $8 to get in. *counting down to 4/10* Ching-yuan ____________________________________________________________________________ "You take me in/no questions asked/You stripped away the ugliness that surrounds me/Are you an angel/Am I already that gone/I only hope that I won't disappoint you/when I'm down here on my knees/And sweet surrender/is all that I have to give." ____________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 06:44:41 -0800 From: William Kennedy Subject: [MLL] What I've been listening to The last few things that I've played more than once: Sun Ra : The Singles the two volumes on John Zorn's record label of Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach, and Serge Gainsbourg the two albums from the DC band The Make-Up, but especially their 7" Free Arthur Lee Richard Thompson : You? Me? Us? I can't remember the name of the groups (it's a split album), but it seems to be some project of the notorious Vancouver BC scenester, Narduaar: I bought it because Lisa Marr (of Cub) was on the cover. It includes Narduaar's radio interview with Iggy Pop. Hilarious! David Bowie : Young Americans In my car, I have mix tapes I've made of old blues (Sonny Boy Williamson, Son House), 50's pop (Al Martino, Rosemary Clooney), songs about insanity (with Yoko Ono and Kristin Hersh among others), one that alternates Kate Bush and Jane Siberry songs, and a couple others, I forget what's on them... I'm afraid there's no Mary Lou anywhere at the moment. My second favorite band in the world next to the Beatles. Neil Finn is a song writing god. Mary Lou and he should collaborate. They're even on the same label. For those who don't like that overproduced pop sound, check out Finn (filed under the Finn Brothers, here in the US). Look for Neil Finn's new album coming out around June here in the States. Ask for it by name. Steve Poltz - One Left Shoe. Good to see that people are listening to this album. It's different than the Rugburns, but still great. I was kind of dissappointed at first because I had only heard the songs live (You must see Steve live). There's something special about seeing a musician live. There's an atmosphere or mood that's created that's hard to capture on tape. Which is why I was totally bummed that MLL bailed on the Casbah show in San Diego. I've heard she has a similar take on music. Gregory Page - Romantic Adventures of Harry. Another amazing, god-like singer/songwriter. His songs kick you in the guts and his voice makes you want to weep with happiness. When I grow up, I want to be Gregory Page. The Pogues - Essential Pogues. Gotta love songs about drinking and pissing your life away. Barenaked Ladies - Rock Spectacle. A misnomer since they're five fully clothed guys. But good songs and fabulous live. Funny as all get out. The Hellecasters - New Axes to Grind. The things they do to their poor guitars should be illegal. Amazing. Billy Bragg - Don't Try This at Home. This Saturday Boy was socialist before Chumbawumba made it cool. He writes some damn good songs. Chris Isaak - Forever Blue. Great album. Good for getting over someone who's ripped your heart out and put out their cigarette on it before kicking it out the door into the gutter. But I'm not bitter anymore. Great voice. Even better name. Squeeze - 45's and under. Got to have some slick 80s europop. Classic. Freedy Johnston - This Perfect World. You've heard Lucky One. You love it. This is his best album, I think. Just got this CD back after 2 years. Must listen. Crotchety Nevilles - They're cool because you've never heard of them. ;) There you go. I know you can all sleep easy now.
