I *really* like the older stuff, but the new album hasn't really caught on with me the same way. I think it has to do with her singing, coupled with the more "electric" stuff. I think her voice and singing style on "acoustic" songs is really good; possibly it is more well-suited for that type of material. I don't know that it is that appropriate for the electric stuff. Even on stuff I really like, like "Martian Saints", her voice and singing really doesn't distinguish itself, whereas with the acoustic songs, she really has something great going on there. I assume it was on the strength of this type of material that she was signed to Sony. I guess it is somewhat her decision to move away from that type of song, but she does still continue to do acoustic segements in concert. 90% of the old-style songs on the Kill Rock Stars CDs just made me want to listen to it over and over again. The sound of her voice alone was a big part of it. There is very little of the new CD that makes me feel the same way; basically, I can just think of two lines offhand; the "dying, dying, dying" from Seven Sisters and (strangely enough) the "tonight, tonight the Billys will fight" from "Throng of Blowtown". Also on the new album, the song "Two Boats" really bugs me. I know a lot of people have mentioned liking it, and perhaps it is better in concert/solo acoustic, but I am really annoyed by the "woodblock" sound that it features. Because of this, it sounds to me like a lame Bruce Hornsby song. Because of this, it sounds to me like a lame > Bruce Hornsby song. to tell you the truth, i've listened to the new record TWICE. i haven't gone back and replayed any songs, i've listened to it all the way through TWICE. once summer comes, there is a store around here that has a good used cd program, and "got no shadow" will be one of the cd's i bring with me every summer to trade in. so, to tell you the truth, i don't have any idea what any of the stuff you mentioned above sounds like, i have't listened to the record in like 3 months. i'll give it another listen later tonight, but i doubt i'll like it. there was one song i dind't mind when i listened to it, it was at the beginning of the record. but other than that, the cd is blah. - -peter ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Mar 1998 17:45:26 -0500 From: Rob Wilkie Subject: [MLL] "the pace of change" For everyone waiting for "the pace of change" ep...mine finally came in the mail today!!! [I hope that this isn't redundant and that someone has already posted on this...I know how people hate that] Anyway...I'm only half way through it, but so far it's *excellent* (solo, acoustic, quiet...) particularly "Ontario, Quebec, and Me"...well...because this took so long (and the cd is only 4 songs) I can now say that I've heard the entire ep and I stand by my pronouncement.
