They looked like good friends when I saw them at the show, but I didn't see any romance. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 13:19:07 -0500 From: Cinnamon Brunmier Subject: Re: [MLL] kibbutz review part 1 > Jimmy Bruno's "He'd Be a Diamond," from the self-titled EP, was sweet > and poignant. Actually, Nick Saloman wrote HE'D BE A DIAMOND (I saw The Bevis Frond perform it live about 3 months ago) and Jimmy Bruno wrote I'M TALKING TO YOU from the same EP. When I saw The Bevis Frond, Nick said that Teenage Fanclub had called & asked for permission to record DIAMOND as well. He said they had done a nice version of it. Has anyone heard this version? - --Cinnamon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 12:38:46 -0800 From: Kevin Wan Subject: [MLL] Teenage Fanclub Cinnamon, >When I saw The Bevis Frond, Nick said that Teenage Fanclub had called & >asked >for permission to record DIAMOND as well. He said they had done a >nice >version of it. Has anyone heard this version? Their version of *Diamond* can be found as a B-side on a CD-5 single called "I Don't Want Control of You". The one I listened to was a UK import, so I'm not sure if you can find it cheap domestically. Me personally, I'm not too keen on buying 5 track import singles for $15, unless I'm really hurtin for a particular song. This version was okay, but then again, perhaps if I was a more hardcore Teenage Fanclub fan I would have dug it more. Mary Lou mentioned their version when I saw her play here last month in San Francisco. When she announced she was gonna play "He'd Be a Diamond" she said something like "I hope we do it as good as Teenage Fanclub". It was the first time I had heard it sped up and done with a full band and...and I thought it was great, better than TF's version. Maybe someday she'll release something (she probably will eventually) that has all those new versions of her old songs...ala *Diamond*, *ND World*, etc. Let's hope! I'd really like to see them, but I didn't see any shows around here listed before (I live in the DC area). Anyway, if anyone knows anything the info would be much appreciated. WHERE did they dig up that photo? Mary Lou looks like Squeaky Fromme! (Kids, get out your history books). Bad skin, baggy eyes, pale, spaced out... And the weirdest part is, all the other other photos are VERY pretty and mostly new. Why lead off with the worst picture of MLL I've ever seen? His ND world, indeed! If I buy the magazine, I'm gonna burn that page. It's just too damn scary. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 21:28:40 EST From: Recordings Subject: [MLL] Buzz MARY LOU LORD *** Her songs are catchy, her voice is sweet and dreamy, and her progression from singing incessantly in subways to acheiving media-darling status is awfully intriguing, but it has all been done by dozens of others. Nevertheless, Lord's bright, acoustic, thoughtful life-slices stand out because of three simple things overlooked by too many of her alternapop brethren and sistren: empathy, accessibility, and intelligibility. I just spoke with Rachel by phone, and she had this new information to share: It appears Monday's in-store previously scheduled at TOWER RECORDS in San Francisco has been *moved* to the HEAR Music in Berkeley: HEAR Music 1809 4th Street (near I-80, 2 blocks north of University, Berkeley CA in *west* Berkeley... west of San Pablo) phone 510/204-9595 Rachel tells me she saw an ad in a local East Bay newspaper (the East Bay Express) stating a time of 12:00 noon... call store for details. 2. There is *another* in-store Tuesday night at 8pm: Compact Disc Land 477 University Palo Alto This in-store is followed by a show at the AGENDA in San Jose... she's gonna have to drive fast to make it by showtime. :) 3. There was a question on this list last week about the usual 21-and-over policy at Bottom-of-the-Hill... I just received my ticket, and it states 'all ages', in spite of the fact that the ticket-vendor's website lists this event as '21-and-over'. See y'all at Monday's in-store, and Bottom-of-the-Hill and Agenda shows. John Miller San Jose CA ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V1 #43 *********************************
