The new songs sound great, and the rework of His Indie World into His N.D. (No Depression) World was both fantastic and hillarious. Mary Lou was great to chat with after the show, and I also have to give kudos to the Raging Teens for putting on a great show as well. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Mar 1998 14:45:03 EST From: AWeiss4338 Subject: [MLL] What one radio station thinks of Mary Lou Mary Lou is reviewed and mentioned favorably in the members newsletter for WXPN in Philladelphia. Ottaway" Subject: [MLL] Mary Lou Lord at The Troubadour Dear All, I first here the sensational song stylings of Mary Lou Lord about a year ago here in Santa Monica. She was playing on the 3rd Street Promanade which is an open area with several shops and such. Mary Lou put on an incredible acoustical performance and I was blown away. Of course, I got the CDs she had with her and have listen to them regularly. Just last night, I saw her live at The Trubadour in West Hollywood. Raging Teens opened with some incredible rockabilly sound and I did my fair share of swing dancing. Next, a band called Perfect got up and played a set. They were ok, but a little harder than I would have expected to lead into Mary Lou's set. Mary Lou came on stage and sang her heart out. The band backing her is really good, especially Marc, a very talented guitar player. The sound guy didn't know or maybe just liked more bass, so Mary Lou's voice was a little lower and somewhat overpowered by the band, but it was all good. Then she got the the acoustic part of the show and this is where she really captured the crowds heart. Black Vincent really impressed the crowd. All in all, a very nice show. Have fun. "Got No Shadow" was the Featured Album for the week of 1/26. here's the address: http://xpn.org/sections/featured_album_012698.html and thanks, andrea, for your generous offer. btw, those of you who've been hearing about this great station in philly, look for live realaudio broadcasts soon. we're in the process of negotiating contracts now. sorry for the shameless plug. i happen to be the station's internet consultant, but mostly i'm a huge fan. even though in many respects philly is a backwater, thanks to xpn, a lot of great music breaks here first. like MLL, for instance, where she has a huge following already. ric >Mary Lou is reviewed and mentioned favorably in the members newsletter for >WXPN in Philladelphia. My only real compliants were the lights the Troubadour kept on, and the increase in the amount of people compared to when last I saw Mary Lou at the Troubadour (50 or so people, and Elliott Smith opening up, back in 96 or so...) I understand the increase in people though, and it's my own fault for showing up 5 minutes before her performance began and getting stuck in the back of the room. Elliott Smith joined Mary Lou on stage towards the end of her accoustic set, where he played "Shake Sugaree," The two hadn't rehearsed it and it looks like they hadn't played it for awhile, but it went off perfectly. It was a bit odd to see Mary Lou singing without a guitar, though. After the 2nd portion with the band ended, the crowd seriously thinned out thinking it was over (and the club put their music and lights back on and everything...). I edged my way up to the stage, where I quickly spotted the lovely Ms. Bussel and introduced myself. We chatted about her stay in town and the show and my picture in the new VANITY FAIR (blatent self-plug), and then shortly after Mary Lou came back and performed "Polaroids," at one point having to ask the audience the words as she couldn't remember the next verse. After that short encore, Rachel and myself and a few others wandered to the side of the stage and waited for Mary Lou. She came down and people began to mob, but Rachel introduced me and I got to talk to her for a moment... Other than that.... Elliott was there with his co-Oscar nominee Minnie Driver. The two came and left together, and I spoke with them both for a quick instant outside the club, wishing them the best of luck on Monday and discussing odds with Minnie. Shortly after they left, while I was still waiting for my car, David J. (Love and Rockets, Bauhaus) exited to club as well. ~Sean ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Mar 1998 18:44:40 EST From: Clipamp Subject: [MLL] Re: jinglejangle-digest V1 #39 In a message dated 98-03-19 04:27:14 EST, you write: > Mary Lou isn't playing any guitars on the album. I have seen her 3 times over the past 3 years in Philly(my hometown) And Id have to say I disagree. Last time which was Nov of 97 she played at a place called Upstairs at Nicks. All said and done there were about 40 people there. And maybe 10 of them knew who she was. Furthermore I found out about the show just two days prior to it. This last time she played was really hyped up and there were people who couldnt get in. So Id really have to say that she has broke in Philly. When Martian Saints came out I had to order it from KRS cause no one knew who she was and now its everywhere. Kyle P.S. I personally think the cheesteaks suck... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Mar 1998 17:31:29 -0800 From: deanorez@juno.com Subject: [MLL] Mary Lou @ KCRW 89.9FM For anyone interested, here are two pics I took of Mary Lou today after her performance at KCRW. Nearby passengers gripped their chairs as the earth shook - the MLL aol folder veteran & the Mary Lou Website/List creater were in the same room!!! Rachel is very sweet and lots of fun to be around, and I developed a schoolboy crush on her almost immediately. That first day I simply drove her from LAX to her Aunt's home in Sherman Oaks - - she'd forgotten the street address but my 41 years as an L.A. resident paid off. I played her a couple MLL tapes I had laying around in the car and gave her an edited copy of MLL busking in Santa Monica from early last year. The next day I picked her up for lunch. I took her to Universal Citywalk, but it turned out she'd actually been there before! We had lunch at Gladstones (a seafood place) where we both got fish soup and the salad bar... then it was off to my work building on Hollywood where we looked at MLL memorabilia and a couple minutes of the top secret new version of GODZILLA. I had a friend of mine take a picture of me & Rachel together to commemorate the day. On the way back I drove by Sunset Sound so Rachel could see where GOT NO SHADOW was recorded. That evening my poor little boy Friday got sicker and sicker with asthma, and by the next day I'd taken off work to care for him. I left a message for Rachel saying I wasn't going to make it to the Troubador. However, by 8:00 he had stabilized enough for me to leave. I raced across Hollywood with an empty tank of gas and got to the Troubador just before 9:00. The Raging Teens were performing their last two songs, and they were as hot as I expected, especially with Mary Lou on guest vocal. The place wasn't very crowded, so I hung out with Rachel and also spoke with David, Mary Lou's manager. At one point Mr. Elliott Smith wandered into the room hand-in-hand with... Minnie Driver!! The 2nd band was good but I don't remember too much about them. By the time MLL took the stage, the Troub was packed, and Rachel and I were front & center. I made sure she stood in front of me so she could see & maybe take pictures (she also had her little tape recorder running. Wish I'd brought mine!). Mary Lou smiled at me when she took the stage, and that was the extent of my contact with her. About four songs in, she looked down and saw Rachel and almost jumped off the stage in surprise. "Jesus Christ!!" Rachel thought this was funny and was obviously thrilled. I don't have an accurate song list, but I'll simply say that MLL and the band have reached a whole new level since the beginning of the tour. Two months ago they sounded good, and the songs were performed professionally. This time, the music had aquired subtle shadings and nuances - they've learned the songs so well that they feel confident stretching out their edges, expanding the sonic palette in thrilling ways. Plus, Mary Lou and the band just ROCKED OUT. The lead guitar in HIS ND WORLD was jaw-droppingly awesome. The guitar textures in JINGLE JANGLE were Godlike. Also, I really did like the rockin' DIAMOND - it had a neat 60's flavor that fit in well with the Nick/Mary Lou tunes. And Mary Lou herself looked and sounded wonderful, brimming with rockergrrl confidence. Of course, the high point was when Elliott wandered onstage behind Mary Lou, catching her totally off guard, for "Shake Sugaree." As he played, Elliott gazed up at ML with a sweet, puppy-dog expression you wouldn't expect from a guy with a tattoo. He kissed her cheek as he left and Mary Lou kinda shivered with joy. I'd say the first 2/3rds of this show rank up there with some of the best live music I've ever seen. Perhaps that energy level simply can't be sustained much longer than that, but the last couple songs were just a bit less powerful than the others... though LIGHTS ARE CHANGING always sounds good with these guys. Mary Lou did a final, solo encore of POLAROIDS, messing up the lyrics halfway through and getting good-natured help from the audience. I couldn't stay, so I hugged Rachel goodbye, stole a poster from the wall, and told Kevin to pass on to Mary Lou how much I loved the show. Rachel called me today asking what number KCRW was - thus I was able to hear Mary Lou at work, a nice interview and good performances of ND WORLD, I FIGURED YOU OUT, and... uh... ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V1 #40 *********************************
