I didn't see it on there) Flash back in time to the 1997 CMJ convention. The lineup for the show at the West Villages Wesbeth Theater was two then little known singer/songwriters Elliot Smith and Mary Lou Lord. There must have been some good luck sprinkled around that night because both singers have finally been given the recognition they deserve. Smith, just nominated for an Oscar for his work on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, is no longer the hidden gem of the indie world with a new record contract. And Lord isnt doing so bad herself. With a new album, Got No Shadow, under her belt, this former subway busker is finally emerging from the underground and seeing the light of fame. So where else would she play when she returned to NY on February 19 but the familiar (and lucky stage) of Wesbeth. But dont get me wrong, Lord hardly needs to chalk up her success to luck. For years Lord honed her performance skills and songs in the dark, dank and often crowded tunnels of the Boston and London subway systems. However, Lord still plays as if shes trying to get the attention of a scurrying passerby. If you have any requests, shout them out, she shouted upon entering the stage. Despite pleas from the crowd, Lord stuck to the set list early on, opening up with Supergun and His Lamest Flame. No more air guitar solos for me, the petite high pitched singer said, referring to the mouth guitar sounds she used to make during her solo acoustic versions of His Lamest Flame, and to the fact that she was accompanied on stage for the first time by a full band. But despite the needed instrumentation, Lord still felt a little uncomfortable with the extra bodies on stage. But as the set wore on, she seemed to get used to it. The rest of her set was a mixture of old songs from her Kill Rock Stars record days to her new songs of Got No Shadows, all of which could also serve as a brief history of Indie 101. And from Camden Town Rain, one of the first songs she said shed ever written, to She Had You in which she yells the line I have respect now, Lord nurtured every song. The best part of the evening came towards the end of the show when the band left Lord alone on stage to play acoustically. It was here that Lords mousy but powerful voice sounded its best. It would almost be a sin to muffle that voice with the screeching sounds of subway wheels or the rumblings of hurried commuters. Luckily, she made it out of the tunnels of Boston and onto Wesbeth to play for them. They were actually the lucky ones that night. (There was punctuation, I swear, I don't know where it disappeared to when I copied the story over. --rachel) This is what I hear on His ND World (PLEASE CONTRIBUTE!!!) I ask you all the following regarding HIS ND WORLD: > Just give me my Waylon, my Patsy and Graham I was wonderin' if "Graham" is "Gram" (as in Parsons, rather than Nash...) since Gram Parsons is pretty well thought of as a roots-rock/insurgent country godfather... hmmm... anyone have a guess? Actually something like this happened to me today, I'm walking around Red bank NJ, where I live and I pass this coffee shop called No Ordnairy Joe. So what do I hear on the speaker that the cafe has set up to broadcast to the people sitting outside (which wasn't to many since it was really cold) I hear Lights Are Changing. I stopped and listened to the rest of the song, wondering if they were playing the album. They weren't but it was nice to know people are paying attention to Mary Lou. I think I'm more excited about hearing that your from Red Bank New Jersey than the fact that they're playing Mary Lou Lord on the radio. (More on this later..) Anyway... If I'm not mistaken, isn't this (Red Bank) where director Kevin Smith filmed his seminal work 'Clerks?' And if it is... Would you happen to know how far away it is from Leonardo? Some of my friends and I were planning a pilgrimage to the Holy Mecca which is the Quick Stop were Smith jockied registers until he achieved mainstream acceptance with the 'Clerks,' and later 'Chasing Amy' pictures. In conclusion, any information would be much appreciated... Thanks. *And now for all you Mary Lou Lord 'groupies' out there in online land... Is it just me, or do any else of you have mixed feelings about Mary Lou's new found 'acceptance' on mainstream rock radio? Instead of a forum for the endless 'gushing' about how good she is or if she has/ hasn't sold out my changing her sound for the new record.. let's have some actual constructive conversation for a change... Any takers?? ~me. (glen) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 00:55:00 -0500 From: "Rivers, Ata" Subject: RE: [MLL] Gap!!!
