Dino - that tape sounds awesome, I've never heard of it. Is it still available from Muzak or whatever? Do tell! I will try to have the Washington Post (if that's the right DC paper) article up soon...I had it right in front of me and it seems to have disappeared somehow. OK, very nice to open up Pulse! (from Tower Records) and see a cute picture of Mary Lou in that fuzzy light purple jacket she has, and there's the article, I'll have the picture scanned sometime later today. The article is on page 13 with that photo and there's another photo on page 3 of her playing with a hula hoop with her hair up in this crazy ponytail... Busking in reflected glory by Scott Schinder "There are no techno-beats in this record," Mary Lou Lord says proudly. "There's nothing about it that says '1998, comin' at ya,' and I like that." The object of the Salem, Massachusetts-based artist's affection is Got No Shadow, her first full-length album and first major-label effort (for the Sony-distributed Work Group). Like her largely acoustic indie releases, the gracefully jangly disc (produced by the currently hot team of Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, of Beck/Foo Fighters fame) strikes a blow for old-school songcraft and guileless lyrical intimacy, with bitterwseetly forthright Lord compositions like "His Lamest Flame," "Throng of Blowtown," "Seven Sisters" and "Subway" rejecting transient notions of alt-rock cool to embrace a more substantial and enduring set of musical and personal values. Or, as Lord puts it, "It's kind of big, kind of adult, but I like it. I think the songs are all different, but they're sitting happily next to each other. At this point, I wanted to make a big record, and be able to afford other players." A few years back, Lord was known less for her talents than for incurring the wrath of Courtney Love, who viciously lambasted her after Lord discussed a long-ago fling with Kurt Cobain in some interviews. By 1995, Lord--who at that point had only written a handful of songs--had become the somewhat bewildered subject of a major-label bidding war. Resisting the advances of more than a half-dozen labels, Lord (who'd already scored a publishing deal with BMG) continued along the D.I.Y. route, releasing a couple of 7-inch singles and a pair of EPs on the indie label Kill Rock Stars while continuing to hone her considerable performing skills, both on tour and in the streets and subway stations of Boston. "At the time, i don't think that I was emotionally or physically ready for it," Lord says of the early industry buzz. "It was also bad timing; everyone under the sun was getting signed, and I knew there would be a tremendous backlash. I just felt like I didn't want to get lost in the shuffle of the whole indie signing thing that was going on at the time." Besides, she adds, "I didn't need to jump on it right away, because I was already doing what I wanted to be doing. They were offering me certain things, but it wasn't better than what I already had, which was something that no amount of money or exposure could buy. And now I know that I still have that, and no one can ever take that away from me." Got No Shadow gave Lord--still not a prolific songwriter but a consistently astute judge of outside material--the chance to work with one of her idols, namely Nick Saloman, leader of venerable English pop-psych combo the Bevis Frond. Saloman plays guitar on all but one of the new album's 13 tracks, as well as writing four songs and co-writing three more with Lord. "I think he's a genius," enthuses Lord, "and if working with me can help him get some of the attention he deserves, I'll be very pleased." Currently touring with a full band for the first time, Lord seems at peace with her new major-label status. "Working alone all those years got kind of lonely," she says. "The big difference to me is that this involves a lot more details and deadlines and choices and telephone conversations. I don't have much experience with that kind of thing, but it's turning out to be a lot of fun." :) Rachel "do something pretty while you can "cause when i talk to you on the phone don't fall asleep well it's just like being alone riding from California to New York" it's not half right" - -- belle and sebastian -- elliott smith - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ To join Some Jingle Jangle List, the Mary Lou Lord mailing list, email Majordomo@smoe.org with ONLY "subscribe jinglejangle" OR "subscribe jinglejangle-digest" in the BODY. I have no idea if "Lights Are Changing" will be on 120 Minutes, or even if that show is on tonight, but I know that Mary Lou told a few people that the video would be on MTV "March 1". SO anyway, if someone is watching 120 Minutes or MTV and sees it, please post to the list. I still haven't gotten my copy of the video so I haven't seen it and I don't have a TV to watch. :) Rachel "do something pretty while you can "cause when i talk to you on the phone don't fall asleep well it's just like being alone riding from California to New York" it's not half right" - -- belle and sebastian -- elliott smith - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ To join Some Jingle Jangle List, the Mary Lou Lord mailing list, email Majordomo@smoe.org with ONLY "subscribe jinglejangle" OR "subscribe jinglejangle-digest" in the BODY. MTV tends to post most, not always all, of their new videos each week on its website before the show airs... I just checked, and their is no mention of the "Lights" video, however, they are supposed to play the IVY video they promised 2 weeks ago, as well as a new Victoria Williams. 120's is on nearly every weekend of the year, but their schedule has been super screwy the past few weeks and it has been starting at 2am... http://www.mtv.com/mtv/tubescan_launch.html ~Sean http://www.zentertainment.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 12:53:00 EST From: Matthau54 Subject: Re: [MLL]Muzak tape. Hello List, After reading the post about the cassette of the Muzak factory I remembered that I still did not get a copy of that yet. I was wondering if one of the fine people on this list would be willing to tape it for me assuming I sent a tape and postage. So please someone out there help me. But tickets are only available to XPN members only right now, so you'd have to become a member to get tickets, especilly if you want to get them at the discount price o f five dollars. 50$ is the basic membership rate, and that may be a bit much.
