Well, I just SAW the noontime showing of "1515", and I was pleasantly surprised to see myself! The MLL piece features several shots of a nightclub performance. Turns out they used footage of the Middle East's 10th Anniversary show (10 years since Billy Ruane started booking bands in the restaurant's back room), and I happened to have been at that show! I'm the largeish fellow up front with my back to the camera, my hand on a monitor, and am wearing my trademark tweed jacket. One more showing, tonight (Saturday) at 8:30 (hopefully, there'll be a digest released before then). So I just caught the MTV 1515 bit on Mary Lou (btw...for the person that wanted to know what 1515 meant, I believe that's MTV address in Times Square). I thought it was well done, except for the rather humorous mess up by Kurt Loder calling Mary Lou Lord, Mary Lou FORD. Whatta pro! :) Anyways, I couldn't find Bob in the bit, but I think i caught Rachel (brown jacket right?) walking in slow motion behind Mary Lou and the camera crew in one cut. When does the video air again? I missed the MLL special broadcast from the Westbeth, since the computers at college suck, and my friend w/ RealPlayer didn't get it till yesterday. I've looked all over the archives, but I haven't found anything...can anybody tell me when or where or if the concert will be posted so I can listen to it for real? I found the chat but not the concert itself. Thanks a lot!, Ellen ***"All that summertime I revolved around your eyes In accelerating spirals in an asymmetric sky." -- Mary Lou Lord*** (playing Instant Karma, Houston, March 10!) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 00:52:23 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Zwirn Subject: DC Mary Lou marathon Well it's past midnight here, I am totally beat, but I want to quickly express how incredibly cool a day I had. First I was going to see Mary Lou's free in store at DCCD in Adams Morgan in Northwest Washington, but I decided to have Indian food for lunch and bumped in at random to a friend I hadn't seen since I graduated from Carleton more than 18 months ago. Then I was at DCCD where Mary Lou did a great 8-song acoustic set, highlighted (for me at least) by Vincent Black Lightning 1952. I adore Richard Thompson, so this was pretty special, and I was sitting within a few feet of her and got a chance to chat and then have my CD liner signed. Then I got a ride to the 9:30 club, incredibly early, and chatted with her again briefly while waiting outside for the ticket booth to open. Once the place finally let us in, I found Mary Lou yet again and spent some more time talking with her, petting her dog Mona, and hanging out with other fans. Raging Teens were great, exciting and wonderfully successful in evoking the spirit of the 1950s and the birth of rock and roll. Miss Amy Griffin, on lead guitar, is amazing, and the band oozed charisma. Peter Hayes Condition was next, and they were ok, but suffered from bad sound a bit. When Mary Lou came on I felt the band lacked oomph for a while, but everything turned around nicely. At this point I noticed someone behind me (I was next to the stage) taking down the setlist as well, and who should it be but Rachel (list administrator emeritus). Mary Lou seemed thrilled by the very enthusiastic response from the crowd and did a nice acoustic encore with VBL52 and Polaroids and Subway. Afterwards I was hanging out with Rachel, her friend Michael and fellow list member Steven (Stephen?) and eventually Mary Lou emerged and just schmoozed for awhile. Much to my surprise (this being my first time seeing her in concert) we were invited backstage and sat around like, I suppose, groupies. I was utterly charmed by how sincere, warm and welcoming she was to all her fans. It was a lovely day and great to get to meet some of the members of the jingle-jangle club. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Zwirn zwirnm@ari.net mzwirn@oao.com alm_zwirnm@carleton.edu Kibbutz Music Reviews: http://carleton.edu/~alm_zwirnm/kibbutz.html This week: Hum, Richard X.
