No problem, Sean, I'm gonna break it up into two posts, but just so everyone knows, if you have some super mega post, post it in 2 parts or something. I'll post later about last night's show, it was really really wonderful, band sounded very good, Mary Lou did 4 solo songs, including "Camden Town Rain", and the crowd was really into it. - -- rachel Received: from SeanJordan@aol.com While the one description of Mary Lou's segment on FOX ON ENTERTAINMENT was detailed, I figured I'd send along my own as a couple details were left out... DANA KENNEDY: Up next, if I might, the singer/songwriter who says the subway is still her favorite venue. Introduce you to Mary Lou Lord. Stay with us. - - Cut two black and white concert (?video?) footage of Mary Lou playing about two lines of "Western Union Desperate" - DK: One year ago the SPICE GIRLS brought their girl power crusade to the top of the charts. Something the women of Liltth Fair know all about. One of the performers who is expected to join the all-female music festival is Mary Lou Lord. Her vocals on the major label debut "Got No Shadow" were recently described by ROLLING STONE Magazine as "a breaky voice marked by the patients of a quite friend, whose insights are first ignored, but linger," Welcome Mary Lou Lord. MARY LOU LORD: Thanks Dana, nice to be here. DK: Is that quote - do you linger, are you patient, is that true? MLL: Um, I think that they, it was real nice when I read that, um. I was like, at first y'now, when I listen to big pop records, it's, yknow, I get it right away. With my record, it's quieter, my voice is quiet, and um, I thought it was a real compliment, and um, yeah I'd say so. DK: Now the fun thing about you is that you began as a Busker on the subways, and that's a great word, who knows where that came from. And you really were reluctant, you were courted by all these major labels for awhile for quite awhile, and you kept them waiting, you were the girl who played hard to get. MLL: mm-hmm. DK: And of course this is the heart of the whole "indie label vs. you don't want to sell out kind of thing," right? MLL: Right. DK: Was that really what the heart of it was? What made you decide to go from a small indie label - Wasn't it the Kill All Rockstars label in Seattle? MLL: It's Kill Rock Stars. DK: You left that small one to go to WORK, which is a subsidiary of SONY. MLL: mm-hmm. DK: How'd you make the decision to change? MLL: Um, Well I just, y'know what, my music had grown, it had gotten a lot biger. And I knew that I probably wouldn't get the shot again, y'know what I mean, to make a record, y'know, with a budget, (Sidebar comes up saying "Lord was born and raised in Salem, MA", then "Lord played her guitar and sang in the subways of Boston.") and have all kinds of musicians come in, and it would be, whatever I wanted to make it I could make it, And I knew that I had this chance, this shot, and I wasn't going to reject it, and I was actually very greatful and fortunate that I got it, so, I took it. DK: Do you get a lot of flack from people who think you've sold out? MLL: No, um back in the day I think their is a zine called MAXIUM ROCK AND ROLL, and y'know, alot of the indie people were down on the majors, but, these days theirs good majors and theirs good indies, but there is also like a lot of stuff that goes on the indies that's the same as what goes on in the majors. So it doesn't matter too much anymore these days. DK: Let them eat cake, right? MLL: Exactly. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 13:15:23 -0500 (EST) From: Rachel Subject: Mary Lou on Fox TV PART 2 From: SeanJordan@aol.com DK: Now do you still perform in the subways? What's that like? - Cut to (!!!) 30 seconds or so of the "Lights are Changing" video, with Mary Lou performing for a large crowd in a Boston subway. MLL: Yeah. Um, it's real great. One of the things about the industry is just like you don't know sometimes what to believe. I mean, there's alot of BS involved with the lot, so when I play in the subway it's like my absolute reality. Like, the people, the passengers, they don't know what label I'm on. They don't know about Fionna, they don't know about Jamiroquai, they don't know about the involvement. And um, it just gives me great pleasure to know there are real people, and real moments in time that I can have. Um, that are just to myself, that have nothing to do with radio, nothing to do with TV, nothing to do with y'know, anything but that moment, and the reality of that moment. DK: It's not those big rep record guys with their cigars, all trying to get you drunk, right? MLL: Absolutely not. Absolutely not. But, in the beginning, Jeff and Jordan, the guys that run the WORK Group, they spent at least 3 hours down there on a very cold night during our courtship. DK: And this is in Boston or New York City? MLL: This is in Boston. DK: And you still live in Boston? MLL: Yeah. DK: You're really riding the cress of this incredible, as we've said earlier, this sort of "Girl Power" thing. Is that kind of annoying to you sometimes? Beause there is the SPICE GIRLS on one hand, and I'm betting you don't indentify too much with them. MLL: Um, they're fun. DK: They're fun, right. You're still in that diplomatic point of your career, right. And then there is like the Alanis Morrisette. I mean, she sold 15 million copies with "Jagged Little Pill," Is that someone you emulate, or you don't? MLL: Well, y'know, the whole girl rock thing - I think it's going to happen eventually is its going to lose its title the same as alternative. I mean, what is alternative music anymore? It's top 40. So, I think that right now the girl rock thing will lose its title, and wil become become y'know, either good records, good music, or something that wasn't up to par. And it's just going to take on its own thing and become a mix of everything. Do you know what I mean? DK: No, I do know what you mean. How do you think that you can survive if you want to have a long career. I mean, Joni Mitchell I think is one of the people you really relate as one of your heroines, and she certainly had a long carer. She's not as huge as she once was, but she's still out there, still doing real great music; how do you become a Joni Mitchell these days? Cause I bet Alanis Morrisette is not going to sell 15 million copies next time out. She may fall off a cliff. How do you survive. MLL: Um, I would say, y'know, Shawn Colvin is prime example of how to survive. Y'know, she's just such a trooper, I mean-- DK: And she's your mentor, right? MLL: Oh Yeah, and it's funny cause like Joni Mitchell has been her mentor forever, and I think Shawn didn't start writing until a bit later and people say like "Why don't you write too much these days," and she'd be like "Well, Joni," and then she really started to kick in, Shawn did, and start writing, and I think that just writing the songs yourself, and believing in yourself -- DK: Have to interrupt, sorry. The album is "Got no Work." MLL: "Got no Shadow" DK: "Got no Shadow," "Got no Shadow," sorry, Good luck with it. MLL: I have plenty of work! I'm on the label! DK: We'll be right back. Thanks Mary Lou Lord. - - Cut - I really enjoyed the interview, as even though there were a few blunders I still think its great to see Mary Lou on TV, and it wasn't a super short fluff piece. Both of this news shows' anchors read my magazine and Dana even mentioned me in a column she wrote for ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY (my one appearance in the mag), so perhaps I am biased, but as entertainment news shows go, I like this one. They tend to spend time with the stories, and speak honestly about what they don't like. Plus, you can tell they know what they are talking about. Since the video is done, any idea of when it might be played on 120 MINUTES? They better play it soon, as I think they owe it to me for keeping me up til 4am the other night and not playing the IVY video they promised... I suggest writing MINUTES120@aol.com and requesting it...
