Raging Teens is Kevin's rockabilly band and Disciples of Agriculture, whose CD I somehow have but haven't listened to, were described by Time Out as "Neil Youngish". So I guess the sonicnet people were right saying she'll go on around 10. I'm reviewing the show so I'll go from the start, so how about meeting outside Westbeth at 7:00? I think that should be good - my photo's up on my page at the Photos section or just write me or just look for a group of people I guess. Freedy Johnston's playing for free that night too, but no contest. :) Rachel - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ To join Some Jingle Jangle List, the Mary Lou Lord mailing list, email Majordomo@smoe.org with ONLY "subscribe jinglejangle" in the BODY. I thought about just writing to Sony/Work and asking them for it but I seem to remember some sort of survey they wanted filled out. If somebody still has this elusive form, could you please email me with the relevant information so I can make my plea to Sony? Thank you! "I'm totally surprised. My manager called me up at 8 a.m. that morning, and I'm not awake at 8 a.m. I didn't know if someone had died, but I knew it was either going to be really good news or really bad.." While this may be the hippest nomination in Oscar's illustrious history, Smith likely doesn't have a chance at taking home the gold statue. His song is up against "Go the Distance" from Hercules, written by Alan Mencken and David Zippel; "How Do I Live" from Con Air by Diane Warren; "Journey to the Past" from Anastasia, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens; and "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic, James Horner and Will Jennings. "They usually give it to the Little Mermaid or Disney films," he says. "I think Celion Dion [for 'My Heart Will Go On'] will get it." Smith hasn't officially been invited to perform "Miss Misery" on the show, but given the fact that every year all of the nonimated songs are performed by the respective artists, he'll likely be showing up as well. Smith is currently in Los Angeles with producers Rob Schnapf and Tom Rothrock, of Bongload Records and Beck's "Loser" fame, working on his debut for DreamWorks, which Smith thinks he'll title Grand Mal, named after the type of seizure. Jon Brion, formerly of the Grays, and Beck's drummer (and possibly soon to be Smashing Pumpkin) Joey Waronker are playing on the album. "I listened to what we had done the other day and I thought it was kind of sad," he reflects. "So are the other ones, though. There's more different sounds on this. There's a lot of piano -- grand piano and tack piano. They put thumb tacks into all the hammers so it sounds like... the Beatles used it a lot." It was Waronker's father, Lenny Waronker, principle executive of DreamWorks, who attracted Smith to the label. "I didn't talk to very many labels because I liked Lenny," says Smith, who notes that he and Waronker have similar tastes in music, including Randy Newman, who Waronker has produced. "I just liked everyone there. Lenny actually talks about music as opposed to the rest of the world who talk about the stuff that has to do with it. He likes songs and I like songs." Grand Mal will be Smith's fourth solo album, following his 1994 debut on Cavity Search, Roman Candle, and two acclaimed releases on Kill Rock Stars - -- his 1995 self- titled work and 1997's Either/Or. Prior to going solo, Smith co-fronted Heatmiser, who recorded three efforts for Frontier (1993's Dead Air, 1994's Cop and Speeder, and 1994's Yellow No. 5 EP), and one album on Caroline -- 1996's Mic City Sons, which was originally slated for Virgin Records until the band broke up prior to its release. When asked if he would be doing any more spoken word performances like he did during CMJ in New York last year, he said he didn't have any plans, but he would like to do it again. "I write stuff like that all the time, but I don't usually show it to anybody." How about a spoken word piece as a bonus track on Grand Mal? "I don't know. I hadn't really thought of it, but maybe." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 01:25:12 -0500 (EST) From: Rachel Subject: MLL Fez show Well, it was a long wait but worth it for the show/taping tonight. I sat close to the stage but had a cameraman right in front of me, but that was OK. The band sounded really good tonight, as did Mary Lou. The set was: Supergun His Lamest Flame She Had You Two Boats Western Union Desperate He'd Be a Diamond His ND World Some Jingle Jangle Morning Lights Are Changing (twice) and tonight she was "too freaked out to deal with it all/and way too screwed up to care" :) Not literally, just what she sang...they did 2 takes of Lights are Changing at the end and we didn't get to hear Amy on the theremin cuz no time for Martian Saints. She dedicated "She Had You" - "to the girls" and to her "favorite Mary Kay saleslady" - it was cute. The band got pretty loud at times, it was good but maybe her vocals could've been louder. Pete Droge's set was also really good, but he didn't play "Sunspot Stopwatch." :( Amy said the Raging Teens should have a tape for sale by Thursday's show, so that's cool, and the webcasts and all...I have class during the chat with her, but I hope people can make it. So, are we on for 7:00 outside Westbeth Thursday? I hope so, and I hope to see a lot of you there - especially HEATHER!!
