Today's Subjects: ----------------- [EDA] Sadly, an EDA has passed [Mike Connell ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2014 18:55:24 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: [EDA] Sadly, an EDA has passed Some sad news that has been around a few days but did not yet make it to this list. Many of you already know via Facebook and the like, many likely have not yet heard... Very sadly, Richard Chang (aka "Akira" in his days on this list), passed away in his sleep last Saturday, December 13th. He was just 40 years young. For those that may not know, in the toddler years of this list, Rich was very instrumental in events that formed the very tight community aura this list had in the late 1990s through the earliest years of the 21st century, starting with his tireless organization efforts in helping to bring the EDA-legendary Jewelstock concerts in July of 1996 to fruition. Rich is in the back row, 3rd from the left in this photo. This photo was taken on the night of his 22nd birthday, the first night of JewelStock, July 18, 1996! http://www.quackquack.net/jewel/js_crew.htm In the following years, Rich was involved in other EDA events, including the then annual EDA campouts in Bearsville NY (where Jewelstock occurred). I cannot recall which other events for certain, maybe others will relate in reply posts. Other pictures I have of Rich (and other EDAs of that era) online are at the links below from the Hampton Beach NH Concert in August 1996. http://www.quackquack.net/jewel/nhbeach.htm and http://www.quackquack.net/jewel/nhcasino.htm From Gerrit Kruidhof's Jewelstock page, Rich tweaking Jewel's nose and vice-versa at JewelStock (again, on his 22nd birthday!!). http://www.endor.org/jewel/eda/jewelstock/after/nose.html The last I think I saw and talked with Rich was probably at the 1999 EDA campount at Bearsville, though we chatted online off and on in the earliest years of the 2000s. Other EDAs I know have been in contact him all these years. Hopefully some will chime in with memories of Rich. I am nearly at a loss for words about this terrible loss...however I know am angry that he got cheated out of half of his life. It's just not right whenever somethng like this happens. From reading the entries at the Guestbook for Rich at legacy.com via his obituary, it's clear the qualities he showed us in the carried on though his entire life. If any of you want to make an entry, the link to the guestbook is at the obituary link here http://obits.nj.com/obituaries/starledger/obituary.aspx?pid=173509469 *RICHARD CHANG* Richard John Chang, Former Montclair EMT lieutenant, Big Brother volunteer and Tough Mudder competitor, 40 Richard John Chang, born July 18, 1974, peacefully passed away on Dec. 13, 2014, in his sleep, of natural causes.
