Married, graduated high school, then college, had a child (at about the same time as our songstress). When I got my license and my own car back around 2000, I got my license plate personalized with my eda signature. I would play it in my Discman over and over (that word looks so funny today)! During her Spirit tour, someone in my family had acquired free tickets and I was ecstatic to go. The seats were nosebleed, but I thoroughly enjoyed the concert at Jones Beach. I joined the EDA list when I was in college, probably around 1999 or 2000. It was then that I finally got to hear the non-released songs, as others on the list were more than happy to share CDs of "Angel food" for totally free -- they wouldn't even ask me to cover shipping because they just wanted everyone to be able to appreciate the music. I especially loved collaborations with other artists. It was a pretty awesome time on this list. Meanwhile, the world watched the telethon for 9/11 victims, as so many artists quickly came together to literally make a difference in the world. Jewel sang a hauntingly beautiful but sad version of Hands (although I remember thinking Life Uncommon would have been a better choice). This Way came out and I realized my favorite songs on the album were the ones that had a bit of a country sound to them (Cleveland and Til We Run Out of Road), leading to my never-before-discovered favorite music genre of country music. I was also ecstatic to unexpectedly hear the title track in TWO movies I saw in the theater (Life Or Something Like It and Enough). Between tours for This Way and 0304, I attended multiple free concerts in Central Park -- including a huge promotion event for Schick where they gave out Intuition razors (lol) -- and I got to be a few feet away from her for her performance on The Today Show. By far the best concert I saw was her solo acoustic performance at Carnegie Hall. A lot of people walked out. They expected a full concert of Intuition-type album versions and instead got classic Jewel. Ha! Too bad for them. Anyway, by the time Goodbye Alice in Wonderland came along, I had a kid and not much time for attending events or even reading a lot of these emails. I did go to one concert, but she was opening for Rob Thomas. Her set was short and the audience was sparse. Still, over the years, my son and I have enjoyed Lullaby and Merry Goes Round. I also love love the Perfectly Clear album. It honestly helped me get through my divorce, the title track describing almost exactly my experience on the day in 2010 when we split for good. In 2012, during Jewel's book tour, my son and I got to sit in the front row. He asked her how she yodels. She gave him a mini-yodel lesson. It was such a thrilling moment for me. I am not the kind of person who gets crazy over celebrities. But here was this woman whose music had truly helped me get through a lot of hard times in my life. This woman whose albums actually correlate with stages of my life because I can picture what I was doing every day as I was listening to any particular album. It had come full circle as she stood next to my favorite person in the whole world, my everything, my son. I tweeted the video of this encounter to her and she retweeted it, comment that he was sweet. It was exciting for me! She autographed not just her book, which was a sweet and adorable story my son and I love sharing...but also my three favorite CDs I brought for her to sign: Pieces of You, This Way, and Perfectly Clear. I know this is very long and you really only asked about POY and joining the EDA list. But to me, it's all connected. From first hearing her voice at 14, first seeing her in concert at 17, joining the EDAs at 18, and finally meeting her in person at 31, well, it's been a good ride. I am 33 now and I plan to stay on this list for as long as it exists. If you've gotten this far, then thank you for reading. We are all every day angels and so I look forward to reading your stories as well. ~Patricia ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V18 #30 ***************************
