Then followed up with other live J classics like Nicotine Love and 1000 Miles Away? :-) (I forget what she did immediately after Painters) Anyway, I just wanted to get off a quick post before heading off to work. Mike, you SOOO shoulda been there! TexFest was so incredible. It was really on par with the gatherings of yesteryear. I just got home and am pretty tired but I can tell you, I actually started crying tears of joy on the plane home. And I never do things like that! The picnic on Saturday had around 75 people I would guess, with about 20 of them being old timers. That was great fun and we had Gerrit as our personal chef making amazing ribs that he smuggled in from New Mexico as well as a ton of other food and these wonderful stuffed grilled bananas for dessert. The show Sunday was seriously one of the best I've seen (and I've seen her 32 times before this). This was pretty much on par with Jewelstock if not better. I'm too tired to post any further details about the weekend but if people want to hear, i will try and recount some more tomorrow (or other people can chime in too). Thanks to everyone who made the event so memorable! Amy N. What to say... Really good to finally see some of the people whose names I've known from this list for almost 15 years, but never actually met. Good to see some I've already met but haven't seen for years, & good to meet some newbies who barely even know this list exists. First time meeting Alan, & it was good to talk a little archiving... although I'm afraid that as a result of the conversation, I may soon have WAAAAAAAAAAY more Poltz shows on my hands than I can deal with in a reasonable amount of time! ;-) Gotta say the highlight of the show for me was 1000 Miles Away. She really knocked that one out of the park - I haven't gotten that head-to-toe chill for a long time now, but it was there last night. Even though I've heard it countless times, when she hits the right spots in there w/ her voice, it really hits a nerve. Disappointingly, the only fat man seats the venue had were all the way in the back, but at least I was able to be on the aisle. Still got quite a few pics I really like, despite the distance from the stage. Just got a new camera about a month ago, & I'm loving it. If anybody'd like to take a look at my pics, here's the URL/link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/justfrag/sets/72157626522797738/ Good times in the Best Western last night leaves me running on less than 3 hours sleep, so that's it for me. Great weekend. Now, for some sleep! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Apr 2011 23:00:08 EDT From: rawhite78@aol.com Subject: [EDA] This is how I saw TexFest: In this twenty-first century of ours, filled with 140 character tweets, status updates, and artist's message boards I'm not sure how many people will actually read this long ass post. I don't really care. This is a view of the weekend from someone who has social anxiety issues. I don't function well around large numbers of strangers (or even friends sometimes.) I'm most comfortable (or less uncomfortable) off on the edge of things with some type of prop to hide behind. If I didn't speak to you this weekend, or seemed a bit rude, it wasn't you; it was me. I was trying to breathe and not run away. Anyway... It was in Dallas back late last century when I jumped from someone who just posted on the list and emailed with a few other EDAs to one of those crazies that drives hundreds of miles to hang with a few other weirdos, sleep with plywood animals... and sometimes even watch some blond chick play guitar. I could just copy and paste that post here and save some time. Though some of the names have changed, all of those warm and fuzzy EDA feelings are still valid. I still firmly believe that Jewel is only a peripheral reason to attend an EDA gathering. Sure, she doesn't need a bucket to carry a tune, and sure, she is still filled with great stories, but you'll find those things in your fellow EDA at the gathering. Unfortunately, this gathering had to be kept semi-secret, but it was a great time to see old, old friends and meet new ones. Dave (_MAC14460@aol.com_ (mailto:MAC14460@aol.com) ) went all out in planning a EDA picnic the day before the show. How he was able to juggle all the ever changing details is beyond me, but he made the picnic happen. Gerrit (yes, that Gerrit of endor.org fame) lugged a couple tons of food and another ton of equipment to cook for us all. It was awesome food, and he spent almost the entire gathering putting it together. The gathering itself, was much like any other gathering. If you've been to one, no explanation is necessary, if you haven't no explanation is possible. Dennis Harris was his usually pied piper self, running around leaving mayhem in his wake (and probably sand in the bouncy castle belonging to the nearby kid's party.) Woody the Plywood Cow allowed himself to be roped a few times. People from all over the world, and from all walks of life came together and were happy without dropping bombs on each other. Many of the oldest of the old school were there with stories of text only interwebz, jewelstock, and driving across the country with fellow weirdos. Many of the newest of the new were there bringing in new vibes and new energy. Some of these newest EDAs looked like they were maybe twelve years old, and some of the other newer EDAs remember when television was the cool new gateway drug to rotting the mind. There were also EDAs by association, like my girlfriend Denise, Eliot's friend Jen, and so forth and so on who add an entirely different angle of things. These hangers on were sucked into the fun, and I'm sure all over Facebook there are new friend requests flying between people who both know separate people that were obsessed with some folk singer sometime or another. Of course, after the picnic broke up, tons of people ended up in several different hotel rooms until the small hours of the morning. Of course Luna had a guitar, of course jewel songs were sung/mumbled/chanted/mangled. As for the show, don't get excited. Like I told you, you should be there to see other EDAs. Jewel is just a side item. You could have missed the show and OMG! Jewel just played my favorite song that I've never heard live! OMFG!!1! She just played my second favorite song that I've never heard live! Ohmyfuckinggawd!!!!!!1!!!one!!! She just played my third, fourth, fifth and sixteenth favorite song that I've never heard live, AND an old song, that jaded EDA that I am, have never heard at all! Why is everything blurry? Am I crying, really? Why can't I breathe? Why don't I have all the album covers (including 0304) tattooed as a fat man's tramp stamp? My girlfriend, who has never cared much about Jewel, turned to me halfway through the show and said, "I understand now." I didn't really hear her bec ause I was leaning forward with my chin on the floor, staring unblinking at the stage, but she repeated herself later. Anyway, the show was okay, if you go for that whole best concert ever type of thing. After the show we ended back in several hotel rooms until the small hours of the morning. Luna attempted to teach me an Old Crow Medicine Show song on the guitar (never mind that I don't play guitar.) We all geeked out on concert photos, and finally after everyone left I got Luna to play guitar a bit. Which was awesome. All True EDA's (tm) have little boy schoolyard crushes on Luna. I'm sure her fridge door is still covered from red construction paper valentine cards from EDAs trying to get her to bring her guitar to Texas. Eric "Crashboy" also played one of his own songs after everone left. He claims to not sing or play well, but he is a liar. I really liked his song, and just bought some more red construction paper for his valentine card. I'm in the process of uploading photos, but you can get a sneak peak at _http://www.flickr.com/photos/rowdywhite_ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rowdywhite) For some reason I enjoy taking photos of people taking photos, so ignore my concert shots if you are looking of jewel photos. She'll be out of focus in mine. But, come look at some EDA faces. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V15 #29 ***************************
