If you are already getting a CD copy, I'd encourage you to wait and not waste the extra $10, but I couldn't wait, so I got this digital copy to use until I get the CD. I'm only 3 or 4 songs in, but just those three or four have been worth it. Thanks Jewel. One of her best albums ever! I will do a real review later in the week. Ta, ~Angie. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:22:16 -0400 From: "Scott Anthony Evans" Subject: [EDA] Canadian Press review Singer-songwriter Jewel Kilcher releases her first country album "Perfectly Clear," singer-songwriter Jewel Kilcher's move into country music won't seem as surprising as that of, say, Bon Jovi. After all, she grew up in rural Alaska, she's an avid horsewoman with a long-running relationship with a rodeo star and early hits "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "You Were Meant for Me" have more in common with recent country hits than with current pop music. Jewel takes the reassignment seriously. She co-produced the album with John Rich of Big & Rich, wrote or co-wrote all but one of the 11 tracks, and will tour this summer with country star Brad Paisley. Country fans have already welcomed her, too: Her first single, "Stronger Woman," shot into the top 15 of the country radio charts. The strength of "Perfectly Clear," as with many contemporary country singers, comes from Jewel singing her own words. The best songs - "I Do," "Everything Reminds Me of You," "Til It Feels Like Cheating" - have a distinct and believable point of view, and the arrangements merge modern Nashville gloss with an acoustic base that works with Jewel's idiosyncratic, breathy voice. Also, her typical lyrical slant - - taking a positive yet earthy look at everyday life - fits country music as snugly as two Lego blocks locking together. Nothing on "Perfectly Clear" will separate Jewel from the pack as markedly as her first pop singles a dozen years ago. But her new album suggests her shift to country music could benefit both singer and genre. Check this out: On "Anything But You," Jewel sings a barroom weeper over a crying steel guitar that updates classic country music more effectively than most current country singers could. It should erase any doubt whether she belongs in Nashville. What a strange start, too...admittedly, the twanginess from 'Love is a Garden' made my right eyeball fester and twitch, but I knew I'd love 'Stronger woman', and I'll be honest, 'I Do' wasn't as great to me as 'Rosey and mick'...loved that track!...Absolutely lloved the album s it reminds me of 'This Way' mixed with a little GAIW...although I think GAIW was just as 'country' as this one is...you've got toremember, I come from the metropolils known as Bowie...so I know REALLY country music...songs like 'i'm not really drinking, I'm just holding the can' or 'I'm just here to get ma baby outta jail'...those are country, like Hank Capps...but I must admimt, I can't wait to give this to me mate at the local watering hole and dance with some young something to 'Anyone But You'... Which reminds me, 'Anyone But You' is arguably the most 'country' song, and probably the greatest, on the whole damn record! I have never heard that song before, but this track should be her next single (being that I don't like 'I Do')...I could write pages upon pages about this song...what a track! Ladies and Gentleman, cowboys and cowgirls and all you wannabes in between hangin round Gilly's...THAT IS COUNTRY MUSIC! 'Anyone But You' is probably the best song on the album! Impressed? I'm flabbergasted!...I mean, she ain't no Dolly, but Jewel has her own sort of 'niche' or 'nook'...and MAN, I wasn't incredibly wow'ed or impressed until I heard 'Anyone But You'...what a hit that'll be1 Sounds lilke my old country record classics...makes me wanna get smashed to Hank Capps and watch the needle wobble as I cry over a long lost love in my sleeping recliner over bottles of bourbon and SPAM... You know real country music because it makes you feel slightly sad and maudlin especially if you've got some old flame you aren't over...so here I was, three down and two to go, listening to the record, polishing my boondockers and by the time 'Anyone But You' comes on, I her thhat and by the end of the song ,here I am bawling insanely on my freshly shined left boondocker with my head sunk down hung down and dropped later to my knees as I sit on the corner of my rack...man, that's country my friends, THAT'S COUNTRY! I didn't htink she could pull that one out, as I've never heard many of these songs before...first time hearing tthat, I'm over here sobbing and letting it go like Niagra Falls...excellent song! All in all lI'm very impressed! I didn't think it would turn out this good, and with the exception of the false twanginess, this album is gonna be something else...it's like a blend of 'This Way', GAIW, a little classic country and old-school Jewel...with a 'jukebox classic country flare' to it...it was well worth the money!
