I was listening to Spirit, so maybe that's what started my mind a-wandering. I've never been to any get-togethers (Bearsville or otherwise), but I still have a few vivid memories from this list that I wanted to share! The first was my first Angelfood! A nice woman by the name of Nancy Nguyen copied Jewelstock, Rare Angels and Radio Angels for me on a B&P and introduced me to live Jewel a little over 10 years ago! The part I remember most about this was the kind note she included along with a hand-drawn EDA Angel on the note. It was definitely a great first "trading" experience! The second vivid memory from this list was when Scott Evans (I'm pretty sure it was him, the same member who contributes a lot to this day!) posted a real media capture of Hands from his local radio station before most of the other stations across the states had even started playing it. Do you remember the days when new music on the internet was scarce? Everyone was clambering to hear "Hands" and Scott was kind enough to post a recorded copy. (And my has technology improved...I remember it almost being unbearable to listen to, yet it was new Jewel so you couldn't help yourself!) Anyone else remember this? Anyone care to share some of their fond memories? :) Just feeling a bit nostalgic I guess. I had off and on access to email back then, and knew that some EDA were supposed to be around. So, I walked all over the parking lot, and around the grounds and was starting to get really bummed. Finally I just gave up and got in the beginnings of a line at the doors to the arena. That is when I saw several people wearing EDA and EDAF shirts standing behind the locked glass door in the air conditioning! For like 30-45 minutes I had to stand there knowing that people I'd talked to on the internet were just feet away. Finally the doors were opened and I got to meet Amy, Luna, Dennis, and Amias in person. Later we met Courtney and others. Ten years later, and Amias has faded away, but I still talk to Amy, Luna and Dennis quite often. After the concert we all hung out at a cafe for awhile and then at around 2AM they all left for Houston to see Jewel the next night, and I hauled ass back up to Paris, took my roommate to work, then hauled ass to Houston. There I met Amber, Derrick, Tien, Mindi and a few others at a picnic before the show. After the show most of us piled up into a motel room, Luna played guitar (I remember her playing "Summer Home in your Arms" and maybe "You're in Cleveland Today" ) and somewhere there is a photo of me sleeping with Woody the Plywood Cow. The next morning Luna, Amy and Dennis all left for New Orleans (well, after Amias and I pulled them over and the side of the highway for manly hugs) and I took Amias to Austin, then I had a lonely trip back to Paris for work. I just about wore out Rare Angels on that trip. Later that year Amber and I stayed at Luna's for about a week following a TXEDA gathering to watch VH1's Storytellers. It was a pretty cool trip. I came down from Abilene with my 17ft canoe on top of my truck, and we all just hung out for the week. I think Amber and I were pretty bad guests though... Luna would go to work, we'd chill in the pool, then Luna would come home and cook us a yummy supper. She'd also play her guitar in the evenings... Her own songs, and also covers, including jewel. Probably the best show I've ever been to was in her living room. She started playing around seven, and by then end of it the three of us were just sitting the dark... I can't really explain it, but you could almost felt like Carlos (her old guitar) was a fourth person in the room as she played... I know, sounds corny. Then a year later I bought a one way ticket and rode a bus up to NYC. Got off the bus in NYC, then road the PATH train over Jersey. Amy picked me up and took me to her kick ass pre-civil war apartment and I got to meet tons of EDAs. Luna was here (it was her living room tour) and of course Dennis. But also I got to meet Dan Stark (who had a hand in mixing some of the angelfood that is sitting on your shelf.) Leif, Tom Proven, Abe, Eric (Crashboy), Tammy, and probably others, but my memory sucks. It was a really good time, and Amy had a floor full of EDAs that night. After everyone left I spent almost a week exploring NYC, and then tried to hitchhike home. I took the PATH to Newark, got lost and almost mugged, and ended up on the turnpike. You might not know this, but if you are walking down the Jersey Turnpike with a huge backpack with a cardboard sign that reads "Texas Bound" people will not stop. Won't even slow down... And smog walls work.... They keep both smog and hitchhikers from texas trapped down on the highway. Thankfully Amy bailed me out of that one, and she is still one of my dearest friends. I have not seen an EDA in person since 2001, and that time was a brief warm moment in a very cold, dark time. My mother was lying in a hospital bed dying of an overdose of her anti-anxiety pills, and I was quietly going insane trying to hold the family together. Not a single friend came to see me. Except Luna. She came through town and we ate lunch in the hospital cafeteria and talked for quite awhile. Finally she hugged me and drove off to California. She'll never really know how much that little hour or two visit helped me hold it together. I still enjoy listening to jewel, though there are songs out there now I have never heard. But to me, the EDAs will always be about the people, not some blond chick in Stephenville. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2008 11:17:19 EST From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] EDA List Memories There are too many memories to list! It would take more room than a Webster's Dictionary I think. Most of my best memories ever involve EDA's. The EDA's changed my life and at least half of my current best friends are people I met through the list. Of course there's JewelStock but I was so nervous that it was hard to fully enjoy (it was our first real meet up). JewelStock Night 3 in New Hampshire was a blast even though I was sick. Selena rented a van we dubbed the Party Van and picked up a bunch of us on the way up. The EDA's took over most of a dumpy little motel on the beach, packing like 10 people into each room. We played volleyball and I think horseshoes on the beach. We buried Selena in the sand. The next few Bearsville reunions were pure bliss. Remember the Laser Tag tournament that was so much fun for the first 500 or so rounds (ok maybe I exaggerate)? The Higher Ground For Humanity meeting with Shane Kilcher and Francesca and hanging out with them at the pool and then going tubing the next day. We all held on to each other (or tried to) while drifting down the river. Getting to drive Akira's BMW on the twisting roads of Bearsville and him telling me to go faster was awesome! Trips to California (Pajama Jam, HotDog Fest, Gathering of Angels), Texas (Rowdy covered that one quite well already), meeting up with Poltz and Jewel's band on the streets of New Orleans and going bar hopping with them, Cape Cod (Living Room Tours), NashBash, MTV and VH1 tapings. All of the other incredible artists we discovered along the way (Patty Griffin, Joy Eden Harrison, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Steve Poltz, Tara MacLean, Greg Page, Jason Mraz, Lisa Sanders to name a few). LLAMAS! Plywood Cow encounters, roping. The "I'm so glad its a memory and I never have to live it again" Woodstock '99 (was that the year it occured or the temperature?). DuffStock, ChelsStock, the debate to stop naming every event by putting "Stock" after someone's name. And of course the EDAF! Beach cleanups, blood drives, foodbank volunteer days, and Project Warmth shows. I'll stop now before someone calls the way-too-long-post police (or Mike Connell) Ah, memories, Amy www.edaf.org ********************************************* "All my life I wanted to be someone; I guess I should have been more specific." ~ Jane Wagner ~ ************** Ideas to please picky eaters.
