We had the chinese breakfast pupu platter, debated Jewel's career choices a bit, and then got hungry again! (The risk you run with that particular cuisine choice.) Jewel and I shared a burrito as a second course. Always the dainty eater, Mike finished with with tea and crumpets, sans the butter. - -- "Trust me. Really, trust me. A school group I'm in called "Youth Against Ignorance", run by myself and my friend Katie, participated in that walk We all had matching blue t-shirts and everything, it was very put together and neat (and actually, on the back of our t-shirts it says "Come together, we can make a stand ~ Jewel", since that's kind of our group motto-ish). We were walking together as a large group, talking and reminiscing and being a little sad. Katie, myself, and a few other kids in our group new a boy called John who died a few years back. We had been singing some kind of goofy songs, trying to raise our spirits but none of them got past a few lines. That was when the idea entered my head. You see, John had been a good friend of mine. He was a marine and he loved Jewel. She was one of his favorite singers because he felt that her lyrics were some of the best he'd ever heard.I was really singing it to myself, but Katie must have heard me. Katie is a Jewel fan as well. I was kind of singing under my breath, thinking about John. All of a sudden, I hear Katie's voice floating across the crowd (unlike me, goddess can that girl sing!). I looked up at her and saw she was looking back at me and their were tears in her eyes. Soon we had almost the entire walk singing "Life Uncommon." We sang through it three times (by the end, everyone knew all the words). It was really really moving. Afterwards, she pulled me over and thanked me. And I looked up at her and asked why and she said that, she never would have had the strength to start singing that song (John's favorite, actually), if she hadn't heard me singing it quietly. I thought that was kind of symbolic. It's hard to make change, especially a change for the better. But... all it takes is one voice, ya know? She got everyone else singing, but I got her singing. I guess that's kind of the point of the song, right? "Lend your voices only to sounds of freedom." Everyone can make a difference, every song can be heard... You just have to be willing to open your mouth and sing. Someone's got start the ball rolling, someone has to give that little bit more. And if you really want change, sometimes that someone has to be you. Human beings tend to spend far too much time complaining about the state of the world and not enough time fighting for it. Apathy is our disease and our escape. Day by day, moment by moment, nothing ever changes. We just assume that we can't save the world because that's what we've been taught. We hate the monotony of our lives and yet we do nothing to escape it. But.. we can. One person can change the world, one voice can make the difference. Call me young or naive (aren't they the same thing?), but I guess that everyone needs a dream. And out of all the dreams in the world, I think that believing that sometimes, if someone fights hard enough, they can overcome the darkness of the world and salvage a little bit of light. I mean... isn't that what the song is about? Don't worry mother It'll be alright And don't worry sister Say your prayers and sleep tight And it'll be fine Lover of mine It'll be just fine And lend your voices only To sounds of freedom No longer lend your strength To that which you wish To be free from Fill your lives With love and bravery And you shall lead A life uncommon I've heard your anguish I've heard your hearts cry out We are tired, we are weary But we aren't worn out Set down your chains Until only faith remains Set down your chains And lend your voices only To sounds of freedom No longer lend your strength To that which you wish To be free from Fill your lives With love and bravery And we shall lead A life uncommon There are plenty of people Who pray for peace But if praying were enough It would've come to be Let your words enslave no one And the heavens will hush themselves To hear our voices ring our clear With sounds of freedom Sounds of freedom Come on you unbelievers Move out of the way There is a new army coming And we are armed with faith To live, we must give To live And lend our voices only To sounds of freedom No longer lend our strength To that which we wish To be free from Fill your lives With love and bravery And we shall lead... And lend our voices only To sounds of freedom No longer lend our strength To that which we wish To be free from Fill your lives With love and bravery And we shall lead A life uncommon... The sixteen year old angel who thinks FAR too much, Kate P.S. I'm sorry of... what little relevence this has to anything. I just thought I'd share. *blush* "The stars are bright.
