Did I just get dissed by someone who actually lives in Florida before their retirement? *sheesh* I must be slipping... Okay, Eliot -- I'm flying into DisneyWorld, and if I have time (and don't get swept off to Oz in one of your flatlander tornados), I'll comb through the lurker's paradise of endless trailer parks and track housing until I find you. I'm not sure what I'll do after I do find you, but it won't be anything either of us would want to see on our job resumes (nothing criminal, probably just making a cheese sandwich at 3 AM or mismatching your socks or something). "Black hole", indeed! - -- Trust me anyway. I'm Harris (tm). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2007 08:09:15 +0100 From: "emilie\.bozon" Subject: [EDA] Re: JEWEL ON SOUNDSTAGE NEXT WEEK This is a new Sound Stage !! And because of her pop music background, it came as a surprise to some when singer-songwriter Jewel was named co-host of _'Nashville Star,'_ (http://tvshows.aol.com/show/nashville-star/SH5608980000/main) now in its fifth season. To hear her tell it, everyone was just slow to catch on: "I've never found the media's perception of me to be completely accurate," she said when asked about her foray into country music. During a recent interview with TV reporters, Jewel opened up about her love of country music and new hosting gig, while revealing how she almost ended up as one of _'The Real World'_ (http://tvshows.aol.com/show/the-real-world-denver/SH0525220000/main) roommates. How did you get attached to 'Nashville Star'? Was it as simple as someone extending the invitation? And how familiar were you with the show? I've actually been a fan of 'Nashville Star' -- I've watched about every episode. Last year, I'd asked halfway through the season if I could be a guest judge, but I think everything was already set. And this year, we talked about what we could do together. We talked about me being a judge initially. Once I realized the judges only have about 15 or 20 seconds to give any input to the contestants, we started talking about me being a host and being able to mentor them. How much mentoring will you be doing? I'll actually have two mentor sessions where they are going to come to my ranch in Texas, and I can spend some time with them. I really identify with these kids. I was an 18-year-old kid struggling to make it on the music scene, and if it was me on the show, I would really want a chance to put my best foot forward. Since the show is all about getting that first big break, who is the pivotal person who helped you in your career? In today's music industry, it's really hard as a singer-songwriter to really come up. And all of these contestants, they all play at least one instrument - -- most of them play three. And they are writers. So these just aren't great singers -- they actually have a whole package, which is unusual. And I think that's one of the hardest things to promote because people are looking for something "poppier" and showier. For me, I didn't have a chance like 'Nashville Star,' so it took about 300 million people to help me. (Laughs) My label, Atlantic, really helped me to be a songwriter, even though I was really in a hardcore pop and grunge industry. And other than that, I think it took the faith of an entire fanbase to help me shine through. With your mentoring, are there certain aspects of the industry you focus on? One of the things that makes me such a fan of country music is that the genre is about authenticity and staying true to who you are. I most often get asked by kids "How do I make it in the business?" And I think there are two ways to go about it. One is to be schmoozy and network and go to all the right parties. The other is to be the best you can be and trust the fact that the cream will rise to the top. I sort of tried to take the latter route. I've tried to, for lack of a better term, kick ass every time I walked out on stage. But I think there are very few people sticking up for artists being authentic. Would you consider doing a duet with the winner? I hope that we all get to hang out and jam, and I get to see where their heads are at with writing. They're actually all really experienced this year. I think a couple of them have at least a couple records already made. How have you enjoyed working with _Cowboy Troy_ (http://music.aol.com/artist/cowboy-troy/700245/main) ? He's great. He's one of the nicest people I've ever met, and he's a real pro. He's been really generous with me and helping me along as I learn. It's a totally different format than I'm used to -- reading off Teleprompters and doing a two-hour show. He's just been really helpful, and I'm lucky to have him. Had an opportunity like 'Nashville Star' been around when you were younger, would you have done it? I'm not sure. You know, 'The Real World' was just starting when I was coming up, and they asked me to be in that, and I was afraid because I didn't want to be known as "the girl from 'The Real World.'" I think that with the ways these shows have gotten sophisticated and legitimate, an artist [emerging from it] can be legitimate. And I think it's doing a job that [music] labels aren't quite able to do right now. I think labels have gotten trapped into following breakouts. If a _Gretchen Wilson_ (http://music.aol.com/artist/gretchen-wilson/657188/main) breaks out, then they are gonna make a million more Gretchen Wilsons. Do you think country music gets the attention it deserves? Whether the media covers it or not, country music is probably the strongest and healthiest of music genres. Pop music wishes to have the longevity for their artists and the continued great record sales without the downloading infringement. I think it's alive and healthy, and I think that's why you are seeing so many pop and rock musicians like _Bon Jovi_ (http://music.aol.com/artist/bon-jovi/3734/main) head into the country market. Is it hard for you to say goodbye to the contestants each week? Hopefully, it isn't the end of anybody's road. If they were talented enough to get on the show, they are talented enough to go on from here. I hope none of them feel too discouraged. I mean, I could have been kicked off the show if I was on it. I think if they keep being excellent in what they do, they'll continue to rise up. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2007 10:38:13 -0500 From: Sasafrass Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: JEWEL ON SOUNDSTAGE NEXT WEEK I'm not a night owl, so thank goodness for repeats!
