Nebraska Public Power District, First National Beatrice Bank and Trust and Pinnacle Bank are all helping to ensure that the new Homestead Heritage Center will eventually have a new film for visitors to watch as part of their experience at the monument. The heritage center is expected to open in spring 2007 and the new film is scheduled to premiere the following autumn. Land of Dreams: Homesteading America is currently being filmed by National Park Service film producer Chuck Dunkerly of the Service's Interpretive Design Center in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. Dunkerly has worked on a number of film projects that have received national recognition and awards. His work on Land of Dreams has thus far taken him to Alaska, Nebraska and other homesteading states. The new film will examine the history of homesteading in the United States as well as the modern impacts the Homestead Act still has on our national life. It will highlight different landscapes from throughout the U.S., feature esteemed historians that study the West and homesteading, and demonstrate homesteading's influences on immigration, agriculture, industrialization, national politics, the natural environment and American Indian populations. Nationally recognized figures such as newspaper columnist George Will and rock singer Jewel (Kilcher) will be featured, as will examples of homesteading's influence on contemporary life. Examples of this include the homesteading-related names of several college athletic teams, including the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Oklahoma Sooners. Some of you are making way too big of a deal of this. The clerk did not "refuse them service," just refused to to put it on an instore account. This was just to be a amusing little anedote about Jewel's life in Texas, not some philosophical issue that anyone has to "pass judgement" on." I believe I have made a mistake in my reply when I said they were refused service, for that I am sorry. I wasnt aware anybody still 'ran a tab' so to speak in retail establishments anymore. Second, I never meant to pass judgement on anyone. I know Rowdy is a pretty reputable guy, but by the time this information got to me it's passed through several hands and I had to make some assumptions that were in all likelyhood wrong. By pass judgement I only meant that I would not form an opinion as I was not there to see this and my information is sketchy at best. All of your theories sound plausable, she could have very well been making a self deprecating joke, or yes in fact the fame could have gone to her head and she needed to be put in her place. Overall I dont really have much of an opinion and frankly I'm suprised that this has caused a buzz at all. Hell this has even gotten me to post twice today. Now back to lurk mode, somewhere in the vast depths of cyberspace, hopefully not to near the black hole that is Harris.
