IF YOU WERE COMPETING, WOULD YOUR RESPONSE BE THE SAME OR WOULD YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT STRATEGY? Well, the hard thing about being an artist is that you have to foster a fierce and stubborn belief in yourself, and balance that with the natural insecurities that are innate in every artist. You have to be open to criticism, but weigh it against your conscience ... because you want to grow, but not in a way that compromises who you are and what you stand for. For me, I decided I wanted to be a singer/songwriter who cared about the craft more than I cared about fame, so I took advice within that context. I turned down a lot of advice that may have helped me have more hits or bigger hits, if it was in a way that seemed cheesy to me. Knowing who you are and what your goals are is key to filtering through the millions of opinions you receive every day. " ***** I'm assuming those are Jewel's comments above. I thought those were good, thoughtful comments. She seems to be very self-reflective as a songwriter/musician/artist, which is great. She's certainly tenacious and has hung in there, and is honest about insecurities, etc. I like when she told the story (not sure where that was, but it was good) about Neil Young telling her to buck up as she was facing "one more hash house on the road to success" when she was vaguely intimidated by doing the solo acoustic thing facing booing biker audiences, etc. in large stadiums. You have to hand it to her, she does have "cojones" if you will...or ovaries in this case...even if one might not like all of her choices and/or personas, she's certainly in it for the long haul and is very much vital, human and productive, all which is very good. She'll hang in there ultimately and will probably stand the career test of time b/c in spite of being hard for pop culture to peg sometimes and trying out different things to the behest of a culture that tries to peg you in one place, she still is uniquely true to herself as much as possible in such a strange cultural environment and definitely enjoys remaining in the game, she's no dropout, she's quite tenacious for all of her idiosyncracies and quirkinesses there is a strength at the core that is substantial and real and I do think she will stick around and be a force of nature that won't just melt into the facade of mass culture...I like that she's both inwardly and outwardly reflective in a self-possessed way...I still prefer the old Jewel as many might but she certainly deserves room to grow like any artist and carve out her own path... ***** ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. The press release says something about giving her fans a special preview of her upcoming greatest hits CD. And for a select group of fans, Jewel will board a Green Line train (renamed the "Yellow Line" for the day in honor of Verizon Yellow Pages, says the presser) and play for the peeps as the wheels on the Breda go round and round. Oh. While that train's going from Boston College to Park Street, it will make no stops. And as it whizzes past, Verizon is promising passengers left in the lurch a free, pre-loaded CharlieCard in return. No word on how much it will be loaded. Or how they'll distribute them. Maybe they'll chuck them out the window. Once at Park Street, she heads to South Station for the 7 p.m. concert. Wonder if she'll take a limo or the Red Line?
