The Santa Barbara Bowl is setup such that the sun sets behind the audience so it provides natural lighting to the stage. Toby went on so early (5:53) that she was in the direct sun but by the time Jewel took the stage she was OK. I was in section C in San Diego so didn't get the sun but was wondering why the stage was pointing that way. I also had a problem with the ground being curved like a road. The center was a hill and to the right and left it sloped downwards. I felt like I was falling out my chair. Seemed to be woefully short on portapotties for the ladies also. I agree it is not a good venue. I parked in the $10 structure next to the convention center and it was a damn long hike to the venue (on the road too since the sidewalk was closed by the structure and there is no sidewalk past the convention center loading dock). I did notice a lot of people sitting there on the rocks by the entrance so I guess it's a good place to get a free show. I always hate folding chairs but at least there's more leg room than at Humphreys (the seating sucks here). I prefer to stand all throughout a show but I don't like to stand if I'm the only one. The one thing that made up for the venue is the sound was excellent. In Santa Barbara maybe it sounded good farther back but from 3rd row center, there were no speakers in the front so the only drums I could hear were acoustically from in front of me and the vocals and guitars were kind of boomy around. And Anaheim was a typical terrible arena. I wish she would play somewhere like the House of Blues. Santa Barbara notes: Atz came out to play harmonica for Love Me Just Leave Me Alone. Jewel has the guitarist play some licks to get the audience to feel his broken heart but at this show she had Atz role play as his ex-girlfriend so he played to him instead of us. After he finished, Atz made as if he was crying. It was hilarious. Jewel was in a dress and heels. For one song (I think it was Good Day), she gave the introduction and then turned around to set her drink down but the stool was in the back away from her so she had to set it down and scurry like a mouse back to the mic in time for the first lyric. The scat part of Who Will Save Your Soul not only had the guitarist mimicking Jewel, but had a second part with Jewel mimicking the guitar. San Diego notes: 1000 Miles Away seemed an impromptu addition as she played the opening chords of You Were Meant For Me first. I think it was Love Me Just Leave Me Alone where she started singing the opening verse while still holding her acoustic guitar. But then there's a break with the guitarist playing the opening riff so she calmly went back, put down her acoustic and picked up her electric (the double cutaway yellow Les Paul?) and made it back to the mic for the next lyric perfectly. Anaheim notes: Someone said something to her and she mentioned this band does not know how to make the cat go meow. During the scat, she then did the cat goes meow part (not in Santa Barbara or San Diego). In Anaheim she aborted Foolish Games after starting with band, then played it later solo acoustic. In Santa Barbara, she aborted Hands and restarted. In San Diego, she aborted Break Me after getting the first lyric wrong and restarted. Last year at the 2nd San Diego show, she aborted Standing Still because she was "sick" of it. In 2004 in San Diego, she aborted Here When Gone. Seems to be a pattern. Anaheim had Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. Santa Barbara did not. I did not stay long enough at San Diego to see. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Jul 2006 01:48:33 -0700 From: "E N" Subject: Re: [EDA] Late, Late Show LOL ... It all depends on city restrictions and crap like that. If you're going to purchase tickets for these shows make sure you check the venue's policies. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
