(That actually sounds a lot like Alan Bershaw, come to think of it!) *ahem* But back to Jewel -- you know, we've all misread the "acoustic versus overproduction" problem here. It isn't the fact how MUCH overproduction the girl's albums have suffered, it's the INSTRUMENTS synthesized that have been all wrong. If they had used cowbell instead of piano on "Foolish Games", it would have come off as an impressive statement. The chorus: You took your coat off, Stood in the rain, You're always crazy like that. ...would certainly take on new meaning with a ringing cowbell punctuating key words! (Instead of the piano mucking things up.) I also offer that a REALLY good song can stand the introduction of a difficult instrument, such as the typical consumer kazoo. "Race Car Driver" can be played on a kazoo, and get away with it. THAT'S the true measuring stick of a solid tune! "Chime Bells" is surprisingly forgiving in regards to accompanying instruments. A Canadian EDA and I (good day, Jerry L!) once bleated the entire performance with Jewel in Boston, much to the dismay of neighboring audience members. While it is no long-term substitute for cowbell, bleating has its place in live performance, particularly in non-rural settings. Here's a suggestion: Jewel should lay off the piano and string instruments (except acoustic, electric lead and bass guitar). No cello, ukulele or harps for at least three albums. While I think wind instruments such as a sax or trumpet might produce interesting results, I would have to add flutes and fifes to the "banned" list. Recommended instrument enhancements would include steel kettle drums, accordians and any instrument ever used by the "Darlins" on the old Andy Griffith Show. And, of course -- more cowbell! Just one EDA's opinion. - -- Trust me. I'm Harris (tm). As Dave mentioned in an earlier email, we did make sure Jewel got the card. Ty and Nedra were with her at the show, so she was very busy, but Dave convinced her show manager to take it to her trailer and show it to her... I'm not very good at explaining things, but I'm sure Dave will talk about our adventures in detail when he has a bit of time... Thanks to everybody who wrote something, the card was so beautiful, and so endearing, and I'm sure she loved it... Nedra gave us a big smile when they left the trailer, and Jewel seemed to be dancing on air (though that may have been because it was her birthday, and she was excited about the first show on her tour)... - --- Theresa Bolger Gubrud wrote: > When are we gonna hear if she got the card? The final count for our EDA Birthday Card was 70. That's pretty good, and really looked amazing when they were all put together. There were lots of nice sentiments and some good Jewel stories. I'm sure she'll like it. Thanks everyone and thanks again to Lara for painting the cover. That's well beyond my talents. On Monday, Lara and I went to the venue in the afternoon, the day before the show. Lots of people setting up but no security. So, we just walked right in the stage door and wandered around backstage for a few minutes. We got to see everyone's dressing rooms, which was pretty cool. We located one of her head production people and he was very polite. He invited us into his makeshift office for a brief sit-down meeting. He was clearly very busy, but took the time to see us anyway. We explained who we were and that the EDAs would like to give her a birthday card. He didn't know about our group, so we gave him a brief history and he really seemed impressed, especially about Jewelstock. He asked that we write it all up in a concise proposal, email it to him, and he would forward it to her personal manager (Tom Consolo) for approval. He asked that we include all our phone numbers. We thanked him and left feeling quite encouraged. We did as he asked with the email, and then waited. As of Monday, neither Jewel nor Tom were in town yet. Early Tuesday afternoon we had yet to receive a response so I called the venue and tracked down someone who basically had to yell over to the guy we met with Monday. He said "Sorry, we couldn't arrange anything." Not too surprising. Undaunted, we went to the venue a little more than an hour before show time. We went around back by the parking lot where they keep the tour buses, right by the stage door. That parking lot is fenced with a gate and of course, a guard. As we walked up to the gate, guess who we saw standing not 30 feet away with a small group of people right by one of the buses? Jewel! I called her name just loud enough for her to hear. She turned around and looked just long enough for her to realize it wasn't anyone she knew, and continued her conversation with the group. We didn't want to be rude, so we just waited patiently and quietly by the gate. It should also be noted there were no other fans hanging out by the gate until just about 10 minutes before show time. While she was talking with the group (some were band members) Ty came out of the nearest bus. Shortly thereafter, the group broke up and she and Ty headed for the bus and went inside. So, we waited...and got to know the guard pretty well. Patience, patience. After a while a couple of women exited her bus and walked around behind the bus to have a cigarette. The bus was backed up to the fence, so I walked over by the ladies, excused myself for interrupting, and explained that we wanted to give Jewel a birthday card from the EDAs. One of the women was Annie, the tour manager. She knew about our group and said she'd be happy to give it to Jewel. I also asked if we might get a couple of autographs from Jewel. Annie said "If she has time." Annie was very polite so, I handed her the card and went back by the gate. Annie brought the card in the bus with Jewel. When it got to be about 5 minutes to show time, Jewel and Annie exited the bus and went straight for the building. At that point there were about 6 more fans by the gate and she clearly didn't have time for autographs. That's fine. We mainly just wanted to make sure she actually got the card, and she did. And by the way, we did see Ty again shortly before Jewel came out. He came out of the bus to walk her little dog. Lara said, "Oh, what a cute dog." and Ty looked up. It was kind of funny seeing this cowboy guy walking a little shitzu. Now on to the concert. We hurried around and were in our seats (8th row, center) about 2 minutes before Jewel was introduced. She walked out on stage with her guitar. She was wearing a mid-length green dress with knee-high boots, and she looked great! She started playing the intro for 1000 Miles Away, but there were way too many people STILL coming into the theatre. Very rude. She said, "I don't know about all of you, but my ticket said 7:55," and "What were you all doing, getting sodas?" She was smiling but clearly wasn't thrilled about waiting for the audience. She also said something about how she'll just play her own intro music until everyone gets settled. This is a pretty fancy venue, and I was surprised they didn't have people seated well ahead of the artist. Manners people. Teach your children manners. The stage was fairly basic with a huge dark tapestry hanging behind all the band equipment. It had drawings of animals and trees and that sort of stuff. There were also groups of candles placed on small tables at a few different points across the stage. There was also some sort of faint mist/smoke effect going on. And some black light type of lighting too. The overall effect was sort of dark, mystical and ethereal. So, by the time everyone was seated, it was probably a minute or 2 before 8:00. She sang 1000 Miles Away and sounded great. Her voice seems to get better every year, in my opinion. Then she went right into Stephenville. Again, sounded good. Then she introduced the next song as being dedicated to a friend of theirs whose son had recently died. She sang Life Uncommon and really let it rip. Very well done. Then the band came out. The rest of her set was played with the band. During the band songs, she asked the sound guy 3 times to turn the band down. I don't think he could hear her (over the band). They were pretty loud. Especially the bass drum. Every time the drummer dropped his right foot, I felt like I was taking a light punch. I'm sure someone will explain to the sound guy, it's not that kind of music. That's one of those technical things I'm sure they'll get worked out quickly. She really had to sing, and sing she did. What a voice. She changed guitars several times and played electric guitar on Hands and Down So Long. Everything moved right along and after Intuition, one of her guitarists announced it was her birthday, and got the audience to sing Happy Birthday to her. They tried to wheel out a cake during all that but had problems with the candles and actually getting it up front in time. So, the cake stayed to the side of the stage as she started her final song. She did an abbreviated version of the Mexico hitchhiking story and then sang WWSYS. Then she said good night and left the stage. The house lights came up and the roadies immediately began making all the equipment changes for Rob and his band. Most of the people headed for the lobby or outside during the intermission. Lara and I went outside with everyone else and when we got outside it was 9:07. Give or take 2-3 minutes, Jewel's set (with the Happy Birthday thing and 14 songs) lasted about 65 minutes. I'm sure this show will get better quickly. It certainly wasn't bad but, as you can probably tell, there have been better shows. As Dennis has preached for years, I think I had just as much fun hanging out with Lara (another EDA), playing Angelfood she'd never heard before, and singing along (sort of) to some of our favorite songs, as I did at the acual show. And we got to see Jewel, and Ty, and George (her dog), and I think Nedra too. Nedra was with a group of women who left Jewel's bus right before show time. I think they were having a little party in there. Here's the setlist: The first three songs were without her band. 1) 1000 Miles Away 2) Stephenville 3) Life Uncommon (with a story about the recent death of the son of a friend of theirs) Then came the band. 4) Foolish Games 5) YWMFM 6) Again & Again (A&A?) 7) Hands 8) Good Day 9) Satellite 10) Down So Long 11) Love Me Just Leave Me Alone 12) Break Me 13) Intuition The audience sang Happy Birthday, and then 14)WWSYS Like I said, I'm sure the whole show will improve quickly. At this first show, Jewel's people and Rob's people still seemed to be trying to get coordinated about who and what goes where and when, and all that sort of stuff. And I have to give a fair amount of fault to the audience. I know some people are going to flame me for saying this but, too many audience members seemed to treat her as you often see a warm-up band treated. Not on time, occasional chatter during songs, just not that into Jewel. Not real bad, but not as good as some Jewel audiences I've been in. I suppose it might have to do with the mixed ticket? The bottom line? How can you have a bad time seeing Jewel perform live? Pretty tough to do. There she is, right in front of you, singing great songs you can usually only hear from a machine. If you get a chance, go see her. Who knows when she'll go out on tour again? And if anyone from Azoff is reading this, ADD INTERNATIONAL DATES! After seeing all these birthday emails form Australia, France, Brazil, Finland, England, etc., I hope they realize how many fans she's got outside the US. So that's my take on the new show. It'll be interesting to see some of the upcoming reviews and how the show evolves. I've got the Birthday Card saved as a Microsoft Word document, including the cover. I'd post it on a website, if I had one. Anyone with a Jewel website want to volunteer? I can email you the file. Just let me know. Take care everyone.
