Everything was just loud! Except for her. Yeah, something was off. Anyway, Last Call is on and apparently Joe Firstman was the house band tonight! He has been for a couple months. I'm excited for him. I hope it leads to great things for his career. Especially since he dropped Atlantic. - --------------------------------- New Yahoo! Is this an Americanism for "half-caste" or what? The only meaning this has for me is the literal one, which creates a very bizarre image. Secondly, in "Stephenville, TX", she says "everybody thought Godard was a clown". Who is Godard? The only Godards I know of are Paulette and Jean-Luc. A comment on the album version of "Good Day". To my mind, this is a song about depression (as is "Long Slow Slide"). The insomnia ("Why are you awake again?") and the questioning ("Can you be everything I need you to be ... ?") are classic symptoms. At first I thought Jewel had in this version toned down the desperation to make the day a good day ("it's gonna be, it's gonna be, it's gotta be") of the earlier versions, especially the acoustic version I've heard, to make it lighter and more positive, as she has done with GAIW. Jewel has indeed given the song a lighter feel and the desperation is toned down, but there is a real sting in the new ending. For all the desperate desire to change things, it ends "Uh, oh. I'm awake again. It's one a.m.". The cycle is renewed and, by implication, the struggle for the new day to be a good day will also be renewed. But then she says "staring, such a sight. Well, at least the stars are bright", the "at least" emphasising that nothing else is bright. Yet this is said in such a good-natured, accepting way, with even a touch of humour. It's resignation rather than optimism (as a reviewer, I think, said), but resignation that doesn't admit defeat. The struggle will continue, even if it seems unending (which is optimistic in a sense, but it reminds me more of the labour of Sisyphus -- Greek mythology / Albert Camus -- having to roll the stone up the hill only to see it roll down the other side, and then having to roll it up the hill, endlessly). This is such a good song, in all its incarnations. So perceptive, so Jewel. The more I hear this album, the more I like it, and the more thought-provoking I find it. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2006 10:54:41 -0400 From: Kiwi Subject: Re: [EDA] A couple of questions and a comment Goddard I believe is in reference to Robert Hutchings Goddard, he was a pioneer of modern rocket science, but he and his research were laughed at while he was alive, his findings were not appreciated until after his death. Not too sure about Satellite, I think half skinned means multi-racial, but I haven't listened to the lyrics that closely. Scalded-cat yodel? Back when we thought she was hot? I'm getting the distinct sense this guy has a distaste for Jewel. I could just hear her saying, "Cynicism isn't smarter. It's just safer" in that high-pitched Barbie Doll coo. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2006 12:28:43 -0400 From: freckledangel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] never got the ty thing (love is a strange thing) Has Ty promoted her lack of taste? Do you know Ty? Have you ever spoken to him? The only redeeming quality a boyfriend can have are his looks? I'm sure he has quite a few redeeming qualities and they are probably not hidden, you just can't see them in publicity stills. I personally like Jewel's sense of fashion and style, back in the day she didn't have much money which probably drove her clothing choices. Now she has oodles to spend on shopping sprees and probably enjoys playing dress up, what is wrong with that? On 5/17/06, freckledangel@aol.com wrote: > > Has Ty promoted her lack of taste? That was quick. No, I don't know him. Actually I was kind of joking about that post. Of course there are a million things that one might be attracted to in another person. I knew I was opening myself up for flames but I couldn't help it. Was in the mood to bust on poor Ty. But really I was joking, although that might not have been apparent. Of course there are a million other things beside looks. If he does indeed make her happy, then that's a great thing. As I said, love is a weird thing and it can grip you in all kinds of ways and make you overlook all kinds of other things. Nothing wrong with playing dress up. Nothing wrong with writhing around in a negligee if it makes you happy. Nothing wrong with cowboy hats. Ty is probably a great guy. He could be amazing conversationalist, and not just on the topic of bull's balls. or pigs' heinies or those big deer heads that hang on walls. I was really just being facetious or having some extra down time at work. Don't bother getting in an uproar...the point is if she loves him and if he is good for, then that is the important thing, not that I happen to think he's gangly and "butt ugly" which of course is a ridiculous expression but it just seemed so fitting at the moment. Just ignore my ramblings if you don't find them amusing. Please. Thank you. (This reminds me of the expression, "Throw a stone at a pack of dogs and the one who yelps is the one you hit.") - -----Original Message----- From: Kiwi To: freckledangel@aol.com Cc: jewel@smoe.org Sent: Wed, 17 May 2006 12:55:29 -0400 Subject: Re: [EDA] never got the ty thing (love is a strange thing) Sorry to sound rude, but how old are you? He played a few times as the houseband on Carson this past winter. Then Carson announced that he was bringing Joe on fulltime. I agree with you. Carson is a jackass. He has no personality whatsoever. The only reason I've ever watched him a few times was to see Joe. Joe actually got to perform on there one night and it was awesome. Joe will be touring again this Summer (thank God) while Carson is on Summer reruns. He'll be touring in California with Josh Kelley and Tony Lucca as well. Joe also has a new album coming out this Summer. Now that he finally is free from Atlantic Records, he can do the kind of music he's been wanting to do so I'm really excited to hear the new stuff. Ok, sorry. I just rambled on way too long. I guess it was really a yes or no question. haha That's how I get when I get to talking about Firstman, though. I'll shut up now.
