Today's Subjects: ----------------- [EDA] Australian release of GAIW [Barry Howarth ] [EDA] Jewel's Birthday [mac14460@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 13 May 2006 22:31:05 +1000 From: Barry Howarth Subject: [EDA] Australian release of GAIW Hi Angels, GAIW was released in Australia today, although Warner Music Australasia, which released the album, still had "unknown" as the release date on their website this morning, and they don't include it in their new releases either. Still, they did have a picture of the cover; last week that space was blank. They're really putting everything into promoting Jewel here! By the way, "Again and Again" is at 38 this week in the Australian Recording Industry Association top 50, up from its debut at 42 last week. The track list is the same as the US release; no bonus tracks this time. My first reaction was very positive, with the one reservation that sometimes the backing drowns out the voice I want to hear. That's always a problem with bands. I'm not going to go through the record song by song, this is just a first impression and random comments. I think "1,000 Miles Away" is a brilliant way to end the album. The CD is very much about Ty, it seems to me, and to finish saying that no matter if they are far apart they are still together is very fitting. I love this version of "Satellite". It accentuates the humour of the song, and this is the only real piece of humour on the album -- in contrast to 0304 and, to a lesser extent, This Way, which were rich in Jewel's wonderful, ironic sense of humour, which is one of the things I like most about her. 0304 is to me quintessential Jewel in its social satire and political comment, and its sense of humour -- it's a fun record, and probably the album I listen to most these days. "Satellite" is the only representative of that part of Jewel on this record, though there are elements in "Stephenville, TX" as well. It seems that Jewel has made a conscious effort to lighten up some of the basically dark songs she's put on this album -- it is basically a celebratory album, with a happy ending: "Alice" itself, "Good Day", "Long Slow Slide", even "Last Dance Rodeo" -- some of Jewel's best songs. I prefer the darker versions but enjoy these new versions too, though it's really hard not to wait for Joshua Redman's saxophone on "Last Dance Rodeo" (the version of WWSYS with Redman is still my favourite version of that song!). Still, it's a really good album: not the perfect Jewel album that I know is possible. Maybe one day, if she makes another: Jewel seems to have realised that the greatest art is the art of living and loving, and not living for art. Her life and love is her perfect album, and I can hear it in my head just fine. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 May 2006 21:39:45 -0400 From: mac14460@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel's Birthday Dear Fellow EDAs, As I'm sure most of you know, Jewel's birthday is May 23rd. It's been a couple of years since we really did anything for her birthday. At least anything that she was aware of. It's obviously too late to plan something extravagant like getting another star named for her but, I don't think it's too late to at least put together a simple card from all of us. I've discussed this with a few other EDAs off the list and they liked the idea. So, here's the simple plan. Myself and Lara (one of the many long-time lurking EDAs) will be attending the first show of the new tour in Clearwater, Florida on May 23rd (Jewel's birthday). Lara is a bit of an artist, and she's making an 8 1/2 X 11 birthday card to Jewel from the EDAs. Somehow, I'm sure we can find a way to make sure she gets the card. What we're asking from you is a few short minutes of personal participation. We're trying to keep this simple, and get as many EDAs involved as possible . We have new people on the list, and we also have people that go back to the first day. Many of us have followed and supported her career through all 6 "official" albums with Atlantic, plus untold numbers of InstantLive CDs (hey James, how many InstantLives did you buy for other EDAs?), and I can't even imagine all the Angelfood that's been traded without charge, per Jewel's request. We have "unofficial" Jewel tribute websites like Gerrits, Michaels and others. There was Jewelstock. Her mother Nedra even gave us our collective name, EveryDay Angels. This is the last album she owes Atlantic with the necessary tour which follows it's release. If you look at the schedule, they're doing a show almost every day for about 6 weeks. A tough schedule. After that, no one seems to know. More tour dates, I hope. As far as another album and another tour goes, well, I personally think it might be a while. Maybe quite a while. POY came out 12 years ago, and since then she's been working hard writing, recording, touring, doing TV and all the behind the scenes work involved in being Jewel. My point is, that if we want to send her a personal message from so many of us who have stuck with her through most, if not all of her career, then the time is now. Will she actually read through a card from her EDAs? Of course she will. If you were her, wouldn't you? Surveys have always been popular so, complete as much or as little of the following survey as you like, and copy and paste it to a new email addressed to me at MAC14460@aol.com You don't necessarily have to even do the survey. Just send an email to me with your birthday message to Jewel. I'll print out all the emails, and Lara and I will assemble them together to create one big card from all of us. Jewel's birthday is a week from this coming Tuesday which should give all of us plenty of time to compose some sort of email. Remember, it doesn't have to be fancy. As simple as "Happy Birthday and good luck on the new tour" would be plenty. Just take 3 minutes and do it. It would be lame to give her a card from her EDAs with just 10 entries. No apathy allowed. Even if you never post to the list, this is your chance to be part of Jewel's birthday card. Let's have a strong response for her birthday and show Jewel that we're still out here, we're thankful for all the years of really great music, and that we want her to keep making more music. Thanks for your participation.
