I have to vent. This is a place full of people who love Jewel unconditionally, and I still consider myself one such person, but I still have to tell it like it is (for me at least.) I love her. I will always buy her albums. That said, none of them have touched me like Pieces of You or the angelfood I still have. What happened to lyrics like "a forest fire nibbles at my veins, crawls up my arm, runs away with my mind, and burns dry thoughts like leaves"? "your substance has been subtracted word by word"? Even This Way had some real gems (I'll hollow out my insides to place you in, you're my gravity, inside my heart there's an empty room, it's waiting for lightning it's waiting for you), but now I have to sit through (or skip) another version of Fragile Heart "if you want my heart, you have to promise not to tear it apart 'cause my heart has been hurt a lot." And "It's gonna be alright 'cause I'm okay with me." And I have to hear to Satelite butchered beyond recognition. Blech. I've given this one a week straight in my car, and now I've put it away with 0304. It'll come out a couple times a year (which at least is a couple times more than 0304 comes out.) I miss the raw, folky, risky, and prolific Jewel. The one who was sassy and silly and capitalized on her strengths: lyrics, voice, guitar, and an irresistable spirit. The one who just did her thing and happened to be recorded doing it. This contrived, slick, popstar-fighting-fame Jewel can just enjoy her money and her simple ranch life with the love her life. I hope the departure from Atlantic brings the other Jewel back, the one I like to believe is the real her. Until then, I'll go back to lurking and supporting her like a parent does when their child proudly presents them with a hideous art project they made at school. Jessa (once known as the complicated angel, do those names still exist anywhere...? =) p.s. is there some code on this album that prevents ripping it to my computer? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 11:01:55 -0300 From: Fjjordao Subject: [EDA] 1st week sales According to Soundscan, Jewel's new album enters the charts at #8, selling 81,656 albums. With no hit single, and considering the industry these days, it's actually a decent entering. Now the big problem is longevity... If she scores a hit with the 2nd single, this album will have legs. If don't, well, too bad for the world, I guess. ________________________________________________ WNET - www.wnetrj.com.br ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 09:54:12 -0400 From: tface151@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Last Song on the CD I took it as the end of her carreer. Perhaps there's always a bit of longing, even when you are home. And while Jewel has a place to call home, she still has the traveling life and she's a dreamer. I think it's a good song for Geminis. Wandering, airy, longing for permanence and yet craving freedom...it works for me. Amy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 11:15:23 -0300 From: Fjjordao Subject: [EDA] My very long review Goodbye Alice In Wonderland The first feeling after hearing the whole album was that it was a very upbeat/feel good album. And it was a surprise because I thought it would be melancholic and dark, considering some of the song choices (Long Slow Slide, Last Dance Rodeo and 1000 Miles Away, to be more especific). The album starts with pop-ballad Again and Again and I like it. I like the lyrics, they speak to me. The song is very produced and I think it kind of lose its lyrics in it because of it, but well, its still well produced. Long Slow Slide is one of my favorite lyrics of all time. Ive loved it since I first heard it and was excited and nervous to finally see it properly released. Excited because I think its one of Jewels finest work and I wanted the world to hear it. And nervous because I was afraid of what might become of it. Well, it was the first real feeling of what the album was gonna be. She lightened up the song. It has almost Spirit-ish production. I think it suits the song fine, but the lyrics also get kinda lost in it. I mean, the lyrics are already very abstract and not so easy to follow. It takes a few listens to really feel it. I think this version is fare enough, but I wish Jewel would give a little bit more time for the listener to absorb it. That instrumental bridge, for instance, could be longer and darker, IMO. But Im not dissapointed at all, I think its a good job and the lyrics are still there. Then comes the title track. This is where I see Rob Cavallo Jewel working best. I love its production. I like this band version a lot more than the solo one and I think they did wonders with this. Jewel is sounding better than ever here and the lyrics totally come across (unlike the other 2 tracks). Its a hit. Good Day is another home run. Wow! This band version is so much better than the solo one, IMO. I never thought this song was much of something, but now I totally see where Jewel was going and she went right, I must say. If released, this will make a very interesting single, for sure (and its a very good thing). I gotta say am completely in love with this new version of Satellite. She agains lightens up the song, but here I think it works greatly. I always thought the solo version was a bit too dramatic and its all gone here. It has become a pop anthem, as I read somewhere. And it feels good, I must say. Sounds like a guilty pleasure, hehe. Now enter the 2 songs I had never heard before buying the album. Only One Too reminds me soooo much of another song that its just weird but I cant picture it. Im thinking its something like Tracy Bonham or Sheryl Crow, or even Sarah McLachlan. Anyway, its pop at its best, for sure. The lyrics are cool, I like that its not a I belong with you, I need you type song. It was definetly a song needed. I could see this being a radio single, but not sure. Words Get In The Way is the song of my life right now. Its a different sound for Jewel, I think. The lyrics hit home with my life and thats something that only Jewel does to me. And it happens a few times in this album. Anyway, the song is good. Its super pop, upbeat fun. Drive To You is very 0304-ish. No wonder why Lester Mendez co-wrote this. This finishes the upbeat middle of the album. I gotta say I this is possible the best mid-set of songs of any Jewel album. The middle of 0304 is incredibly boring. This Ways is alright and Spirits is also boring. POYs is awesome as is the whole album, but its a differente story, because this album is more important to me than any other album will ever be, so I cant judge it properly. But back to Alice, I repeat myself saying Im very surprised by the upbeatness of this record. It feels good. Drive To You has a killer chorus, very good to sing along and scream the hell out of me, but Im not particularly fond of the verses production. Now comes another long time favorite. Last Dance Rodeo is once again lightened up. The lyrics are so enigmatic to me, I never completely got it. This has become a sort of on the porch song, if you can understand it. I dont know, the beat just gives it a farm feel. Its got some laid back production (which will be repeated again later) that contrasts with the upbeat set before it. I must say the Unplugged version is much better because it strikes deeper. This song needed to be darker and less swinged, IMO. I give it a C+. The only big problem I have with this album is Fragile Heart. I have always thought this song had potencial, but I just hate the 0304 version. I hate that guitar throughout the whole song, its so incredibly boring and its just too damn sweet. I dont know, I just couldnt hear it. And she decided to redo it. So I was like, maybe Ill like it now, because it does have some good lyrics. Well, not so much. Its just too weak, I think. What this album completely misses is a power ballad, but a real ballad, with no beats at all. I thought this could be it, but apparently she wanted to make it upbeat also. Anyway, its a mess IMO. The vocals are weak, the bridge is a big mess, the long note near the end is awful, completely unnecessary. I actually like the vocal work of the 0304 version much better. Oh, and that dont break my heartending is just so annoying Its a real shame she put this song here again, it really sucks. And if she releases this Im gonna be real pissed. On a brighter note, Stephenville is great. Great work here, I like the drums a lot. She kept it real and fun. I think Where You Are has some really inspired lyrics. The first 2 verses are just incredible. They also hit home with my life. This has got some very laid back production also. It works I guess. The lyrics come across greatly and it sounds different from anything Jewel has done. Now we got to the end. Yeah, I also think its an odd way to end the record with 1000 Miles Away. This is also very laid back, almost lazy. The production is really weird, I must say. It adds something diferent to the song, but I dont know what. Its the only dark song in the album. I think it feels epic. Kinda like a movie, with the ambient sounds. Sounds like rain with musical notes. About the album as a whole, I have problems following the story. It obviously is not a chronologic story, but I just dont get it as a novel. Maybe I need to hear it more times. Why begin with Again and Again? Why Last Dance Rodeo is about loneliness in Alaska? Why end with 1000 Miles Away? Of course there are somethings that I totally got, like Where You Are. It feels totally right as the last song, so 1000 Miles Away sounds like a bonus track to me. Also, as I said before, this album needed a big ballad. Take Fragile Heart out and put a beautiful ballad like Foolish Games and then it would be perfect. Also, the vocals here have many ups and many downs. Shes singing like she has never sung in a studio album, which is a good thing, but she gets a bit too gimmnick (sp?) in some songs (Fragile Heart mostly), and its something I dont particularly like. But Im definitly enjoying the album and think its much better than 0304 and Spirit and equally good as This Way. POY is a different thing as I said before. Anyway, this CD adds up really nicely to Jewels archive and I think these songs will make a really great live concert. Its great that all her records sound totally different one from another. And its great she keeps working with different producers. I look forward to hearing her next record, I still think shes capable of many things and is not just yet ready to quit at all. ________________________________________________ WNET - www.wnetrj.com.br ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 14:42:21 -0500 From: "Matt Sullivan" Subject: [EDA] Upcoming Singles... I'm sure Atlantic is already putting the pressure on for a second single. It should be "Only One Too", and that should be released by the middle of June... Hopefully they already have the video shoot scheduled for this song (or whatever second single they choose). Then "Drive To You" should be released in September/October. Just my thoughts. _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 17:13:12 -0400 From: shannon mackie Subject: [EDA] Old Member Returning Hello everyone! I was on the list from like 1998-2000, and then unsubscribed because I couldn't keep up, but I am back again. My Angel name was "Hazy" but I don't know if you'll remember me. But you can call me Bloom from here on out. Anywho, I sold my tape player and then donated all my Angelfood to a member on the list (if it was you let me know you got it!!) I wanted to try to replace what I had with CD versions of the tapes? Is there even such a thing? I can send the money for the cost of the blank CDs. So, it's nice to be back!
