As a reminder, this countdown (which airs new episodes on Fridays, as well as repeat epsodes during the week) is based SOLEY on votes by views on Vh1.com It takes a minute or two to vote, you can vote for 1 to 20 videos, by clicking on the title, dragging it to the appropriate place, and clicking send. Lets get Jewel in the Top Ten, if not number one. Unlike TRL, the videos change position weekly. Last week INXS was number one, and this week they are number 13...all on fan votes =] ALSO, starting THIS Tuesday, and until May 2nd you will be able to listen to the ENTIRE new album on vh1.com. Now I know this is going to make every track available for download on file sharing programs, but hopefully you will still go out and buy the cd. Isn't it fun looking at the album insert? I couldn't imagine just downloading the songs! 8 Days kids, 8 days =] _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find. It wasn't just ..."the videos were already available." It was, "you're promoting yourself with dumbed down versions." The YouTube versions weren't thaat bad. They didn't look all that different to me, but a bit larger and thus more pixelated. PLUS, I used the music zone codecs and it really annoyed me that the codes expired! (and I have to go BACK to the site and get new ones for my blog - no thank you) That doesn't happen on YouTube unless they are taken off. I also like YouTube because the video can preload if you need it to, especially when the internet is slow at the moment. There was a syncing issue, but Scott pointed it out. If Scott were to promote himself, he'd have hosted the videos on his personal website. Scott has been a long time member and nothing but a music fan. The point is ... when I go on YouTube, I can lose track of time and just go from one video to the next - just surfing the videos --> thus, more exposure because people may surf onto these videos and be like, "wow, Jewel has a new CD coming out! I didn't know that!" BTW, how is YouTube more infringing than music zone? It's the same thing as music zone (or all those other myspace type music code sites) are just not targeted by companies because they don't have one huge base like YouTube. And by the way, please don't speak for everyone, saying that everyone has already seen the videos. How would you know? On 4/22/06, Johnnie J. Young wrote: > > Dude. I was over it. I'm not going to say where, but after 3 years of waiting, a lot of us couldn't resist. I'm still going to buy the album as soon as it comes out to support Jewel. Regardless, the entire album will be streamed on vh1.com this week, check it out! Anyways, here is my extremely long winded, piece-by-piece review of Goodbye Alice in Wonderland: - ---- Goodbye Alice in Wonderland, in my eyes, is probably Jewel's most universally-pleasing album to date. It offers an eclectic mix, including sounds familiar to all of her past albums plus some new styling. The album's main downfall is the overproduction in a few of the songs. Again and Again: Compared to the other songs, this was an understandable choice for a first single. I feel that it was a little overproduced, especially in terms of her voice. Luckily, this isn't true for the majority of the songs. Its stripped down version, however, it is an adult, heartfelt, YWMFM-esque lament. Long Slow Slide: I think they effectively captured this song. It still contains the familiar riff, and the mood is maintained. The production of the chorus gives the song wispy, appealing feel. Vocals here are excellent. I hear the tinge of 'Spirit' in this song. Goodbye Alice in Wonderland: Probably one of Jewel's best written and produced songs yet. The song is really personal yet relatable on many levels at the same time. The studio version is just as good as the acoustic, if not better, since it eases the song's length. My favorite song of the album. Good Day: There are a lot of mixed opinions on this song. I think its the most infectious song on the entire album. She delves into uncertainty and the simple moments which we all experience, and then booms into confidence and passion. The ending is humorous, and I enjoy it. I don't think these lyrics are clichi or dumbed down; they reflect something Jewel has always done (Morning Song, Silver Lining, and YWMFM): turning everyday, absolutely normal situations into poetry. Its very down to earth and enjoyable, and I consider it one of Jewel's big assets. Vocals on this track are excellent and co-producer Rob Cavallo's influence shows through in the final refrains. The production for this song is very single-worthy. They need to turn up the guitar during the verses though. I love it but can hardly hear it. Satellite: Probably the biggest surprise of the album. She turned the folk commentary into a booming pop anthem. Probably the most over-produced song on the album, and more imagination could've been used during the verses. The chorus is great, and the vocals and delivery make up for a lot of it. I would have definitely left out the Miss Cleo reference, since its so out of date. Perhaps she was trying to find a way to encompass the superstitions we look to for comfort. Maybe she could've referenced one of those Hollywood fad-religions (without getting sued by Tom Cruise). I would've also omitted the repeating "Satellite!" in the end, or given it a different sound, since it reminds me too much of Hilary Duff. However, since this is a good song to begin with, and I'm obviously a biased fan, I still really enjoy it. Only One Too: That line finally makes sense now! Jewel starts to go into present-day Kelly Clarkson territory here, if you ask me. The lyrics simple, but the hooks are sweet. Its your standard 2006 pop-rock anthem. Her vocals are great, the production is heavy, but standard for this type of song. For these next couple of tracks, the Nashville of This Way seems to have been replaced with California. Words Get In The Way: Very similar to Only One Too, but I like this one more. I kind of feel that they should have only used this one rather than putting both on the album. It would've left room for another, different song. I like the lyrics in this song better; it captures a typical predicament of relationships but rarely hear about in pop music. These upbeat tracks are ushering in summer. Drive to You: The pop-rock anthems continue. This song seems to be the power-ballad of the new millennium. I think the tempo is a little bit too fast, and the production a little too heavy. Lester/0304 influence is in full-force here, which I can appreciate. It shows she is still proud of her 0304-style and not going to stray from it for critical sake. All else aside, its a standard Jewel-format song. Last Dance Rodeo: From here, the album relaxes again. The upbeat pop-rock songs seem to make up a lot of the album, but in reality you have to realize that its hardly a third of the whole. This song is a personal favorite, and this studio version is exactly what I imagined. The production of the chorus softens the familiar, loud and hard sound, without necessarily hindering it. I think I hear a bit of sax influence from her MTV Unplugged performance. I recall someone feeling that they ruined the song. My response: WTF? This is basically exactly like what we've always known, only laced with some decent production (could've have been taken back only slightly, but I guess thats a matter of personal taste). The song now reminds me of Griffin House's 'Waterfall,' a song a lot of you should check out. Fragile Heart: Wow, another surprise. I was really expecting a piano-based, slow ballad ala her Cleveland Pops Orchestra show. It was a much better version, IMO, and gave the simple song more depth. This just takes the 0304 version and gives it GBAIW production. Jewel must have really loved this song as it was to use it twice. I'm not sure which I like better yet. Like Good Day, its simple, old school Jewel. Stephenville, TX: Perfect! The production is perfectly suited to the song, and not overdone. I love this song, and its style well-suits my taste. The beat and instrumentation is perfect, as are her vocals. Where You Are: Very pretty and melodic. It feels like she's channeling Joni Mitchell. The production could have been toned down here a little bit. I love this song. Once again, her vocals are perfect. I hear some PoY-style harmonizing. 1000 Miles Away: This song is the gem of the album. It sounds out of place, but echoes Pieces of You style, only without the nervous tension in her studio vocals from those days. Her voice is amazing; the production is minimal and perfectly accents the song's heartbreaking beauty. Its a perfect closing to an ambitious, eclectic album. Goodbye Alice in Wonderland is probably Jewel's best CD to date. Fans of all of her works can find something to enjoy. The only thing missing which This Way (which ranks up there with it) holds over it is its unique, laid-back and saucy charm. I would have possibly changed the song selection or production of the songs which make up the middle up the album, but they're still very enjoyable pieces which will appeal to the mainstream. Jewel makes up for any possible fallings with her best studio vocals to date, by far. They hold the entire album together. Her voice often sounds exactly like it does live, and it soars. Lyrics are for the most part top-notch. Critics will probably make note of its over-production, but Jewel seems to have looked at producing as art in its own, layering most of the songs with careful thought and skill. My favorite Jewel album to date. 8.5/10. - --- I'm pretty long-winded, it definately shows, lol. Make sure you head out and buy her album May 2, and request Again and Again!
