In the first one, it looks really abnormal and strange, but in the second one, when you can see the angle that her arm is at, it looks much more natural. Her name was Maureen Dowd and she was here in Australia promoting her book "Are men Necessary? I'd never heard of her before but she sounded interesting and I liked her sense of humour. So I bought her book. On the inside cover there is a 1950s-style drawing of a curvaceous blond in a red dress being stared at, ogled, by a number of men. And in the acknowledgements she writes: "I want, first, to thank my mom, mo cuishle, who taught me that true beauty is achieved by helping those less fortunate and who long ago advised me, when I was feeling blue or self-doubting about men, that the best thing to do was go out and buy a red lipstick or a red dress. 'It will be your red badge of courage,' she said." Naturally, I immediately thought of these words: "I'm gonna put on the sexy red thing, I'm gonna manipulate, I'm gonna pull some strings, Cause my strength is in my power over you. The power of a woman." Fits the book so well! It was an interesting and thought-provoking read, though parts of it were incomprehensibly American, and with many parallels and similarities with Jewel's ideas, particularly those in 0304 -- summed up in the contrast between the real/simple world and the unreal/high-tech digital world, which Jewel is continuing in her new CD (but it is an old theme of hers). I'm now reading Dowd's earlier book "Bushworld" -- a very witty but scary book! Actually, the book is not scary, just the people described in it. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V11 #74 ***************************
