Just got home and had a stiff drink. I was scared that badly.... I was out and driving home from Syracuse, trying to find on local radio one of the national Saturday Night Oldies shows. It's been a Saturday night tradition of mine for the better part of two decades, listening to the national shows playing the best of the 50s and 60s, and then , as the years rolled by, (depressingly) slipping into music from the 70s. A caller called in requesting an early Madonna song....1986's "Crazy For You"...on the OLDIES show. I wanted to slit my wrists. Madonna? Oldies? Did I pass through a time warp on Route 81 South and was suddenly in the year 2016? He played it. He freaking played it. That got me thinking. Ten years ago right now, Jewel's first release, "Who Will Save Your Soul?" was just starting to get some airplay here and there, finally gaining hit-status in the middle of 1996, the same time that the forefathers (and forepersons?) of this list gathered in Bearsville for JewelStock. The Madonna oldie played tonight was from 1986. That means that in ten years, Jewel, will be getting airplay on the oldies radio (satellite?) shows. My lord, in ten years the Olsen twins will be playing mothers in television and movies. In ten years it will probably happen the same night, I'll be listening in my hybrid/solar-powered self-rocking chair at the Bearsville National Retirement Village when someone willl call "Solid Gold Saturday Night" on their wristwatch phone (probably a 20 year EDA vet) and request "Who WIll Save Your Soul", while I also have the holograph-vision turned on and at the same time see a made-for-holographvision film starring the Olson twins in a twins-version remake of "Look Who's Talking". Then I'll slit my wrists. Jewel is ten years from oldies play....the horror...the horror.... Mike "the oldie" Well, I still pay attention to Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty...and they are "OLD". And they still release new music and they still tour. And they still write good songs. It doesn't really matter how "old" the artist is you enjoy as long as the artist is still releasing good songs or songs that relate to you in some manner. It WOULD be fairly pathetic for Jewel to dance on stage in short skirts singing "Intuition" at age 65......but if she can still write good songs, and I see no reason for that to change...there will be something to enjoy as the years move along. Of course her "audience" will age as well. Change happens. I just hope she stays away from POP as the years descend. dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2006 10:27:49 EST From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel is half-way to oldies status(?) Don't worry, Mike. By then you won't even remember your own name! When Jewel comes on the oldies station you'll think its some new chick and it will be like discovering her all over again. :-P Amy N.
