Hey, so, I've listened to GAIW about 3-4 times now in a row, and I'm wondering...is this her LAST album? It sounds so much like a goodbye to the industry. Maybe a hello to settling down and all that jazz. I feel like it's more like goodbye to california and caring about fame, press, (maybe even some fickle fans) etc. but not goodbye to music and putting it out there for people who will enjoy it... I thought it was really goodbye the first time I heard it-- but am feeling differently after the video and her letter. - -- Chrissy >From: gina brumley >To: Jewel List >Subject: [EDA] Is GAIW a goodbye? >Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2006 23:35:06 -0800 (PST) > >Hey, so, I've listened to GAIW about 3-4 times now in a row, and I'm >wondering...is this her LAST album? But I was struck by the the changes between the two versions I have now heard. It reminded me of the changes she made to "Down So Long" for Spirit, which caused quite a fuss on this list at the time. The earlier versions of both songs were dark and sad, and moving. But both contained an ambiguity that allowed for a more hopeful, optimistic interpretation: " I've been down for so long that the end must be drawing near" -- the end of what? Life or depression? Both are possible, life seemed to be the implication in the earlier version, but Jewel wanted a more positive interpretation for Spirit, it seemed to me. Similarly, "It was only a reflection of my lonely mind wanting what was missing in my life" : if the tense of "was" is just reported speech then something is still missing, which is how I heard the earlier version. But if "was" is a genuine past tense, then the missing is over, and this is the way Jewel wants the song to be interpreted: her change to the ending makes it completely unambiguous: "I have found what was missing from my life". Also, Jewel has played down the presence of the "You" (the person who deceived her, who did not really love her) in the video version: "you" is still there in the "but you did not" but "your pretty lies" has been depersonalised. It's still a very good song, but I find the earlier version has greater coherence (ditto for "Down So Long"), and spoke to me more directly: she knows me so well, though she does not. If the few recent songs I've have heard (Alice, Good Day, I Belong with You) are anything to go by, this will be a very good album indeed, and, I get the feeling, her last. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 20:05:00 -0600 From: "Matt Sullivan" Subject: [EDA] Create the Album No one has done something like this for a while, and I'm bored so I figured why not. Make the tracklisting that you would love for "Goodbye Alice In Wonderland". The only rules are that it has to have "Again and Again" and "Goodbye Alice In Wonderland", and that it can only include 14 songs. If you want hidden tracks or bonus tracks or whatever they have to be included in the count. Repost the tracklist you would like so everyone can see! GOODBYE ALICE IN WONDERLAND 1. Again and Again 2. Studies in Love #12 3. Good Day 4. Down 5. Does Anyone Belive in Love (Anymore) 6. Carnivore 7. I'm Fading 8. Words Don't Come Out Right 9. I Belong With You 10. Down 11. *Some new song we haven't heard* 12. Goodbye Alice In Wonderland 13. Violet Eyes (Live) 14. Chime Bells (Live) _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find.
