After all the recent natural disasters, I just realized that the October 17, 1989 San Francisco earthquake happened 16 years ago today! I was in the middle of my first visit to San Francisco, and missed being trapped on the collapsed bay bridge only because of a last minute change in conference schedules... sometimes life is a game won or lost by inches (or minutes). Was anyone else on the list in that earthquake? Right now I'm looking at a set of Mardi Gras beads and a poster on the wall from the 300th Mardi Gras. Tom "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou Now" Proven and I made a 26 hour drive straight thru from Pennsylvania Amish country to Nawlins, trading the van wheel every few hours. Once we got there, we showered, and spent the next 12 hours wandering the french quarter. After four days of revelry, the drive home was done with an overnight stop somewhere in Tennessee (I think). Later that summer, Amy and I returned to Nawlins as the third stop on an EDAF/Jewel concert series food drive, the first two in Dallas and Houston. Another great EDA roadtrip! After Katrina, I'm sure Nawlins will have been changed forever (I may have to start calling it New Orleans!). Then you start ruminating about the origins of this list, and the whole EDA Gathering phenomenon -- and it dawns upon you that it has been ten years next summer. TEN YEARS. And you know what that means -- Mike Connell is getting REALLY old! ;-) Harris. Trust me. (tm) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V10 #242 ****************************
