In no particular order ---- Absence of Fear, This Way (if you change "..in bed" to "instead" or something if someone sings it -- I don't think anyone will notice if you play her version, What's Simple Is True (except for maybe not good in August), Face of Love (which I've heard at a wedding), and finally, my favorite of all of the above -- Swedish Lullabye -- I know it's about a wolf and dolphin, but no one would know that (unless they know Swedish!) and the song is so pretty and is, technically, a love song. The version off 1000 Miles Away is flawless -- stunning. Also, her new album may be out in time and from the titles, may have something appropriate. Well, Good Luck! I was married in August of 2003 and I just had to have some part of Jewel in my wedding too! I used Face of Love. I know it was used as a christmas song......but there is nothing christmasy about the lyrics.....they speak of pure and unconditional love. The part that spoke to me was "so take my hand and knowing with it i also give my heart wanting never to be separate again let eternity begin" I used the lyrics as a reading during the ceremony, and I recieved compliments on the choice later on. Hope it helps! The soon to be mommy in July, Beth "Face Of Love" until tonight my heart was just half full i'd never known the fruit which fed the soul but now i see what may put to rest my longing for i have seen, the face of love the grace of god, the face of love in silence i feared my heart would remain words unheard inside a separateness of skin but now i know that the skin just veils the soul for i have seen, the face of love the grace of god, the face of love so take my hand and knowing with it i also give my heart wanting never to be separate again let eternity begin if you were flame i'd allow myself to be consumed completely were you wind i would wish you pass through me but now i know that the skin just veils the soul for i have seen, the face of love the grace of god, the face of love ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Apr 2005 04:56:29 -1100 From: "miranda mente" Subject: [EDA] more concert dates (milw) hi angels, I was just on the pabst theater's (in milwaukee) website because i'm going to a show there tonight... and on the frontpage they have a concert date added for Jewel! She's playing on July 22. The e-members presale starts monday april 11, which anyone can join. Otherwise the regular ticket sale starts april 15th. One thing though is that ticket prices seem high again, $39.50 and $59.50, plus all the extra charges and stuff. I really love this theater, I go there all the time, it's so gorgeous... it's always been a place i've wanted jewel to play! I'm so excited that i'm going to get to see her there! Not because the lyrics are of Joni Mitchell professional perfection, or because Jewel's voice is flawless in tone and pitch. I've always loved this album because of its simple beauty. Every track is a voice, an acoustic guitar, and an occasional piano. It's minimal production, but with Jewel, that's what works. She has an unaffected, versatile voice that brings the words "raw talent" to mind more quickly than "immature." And while her lyrics are not "great or perfect yet" (as she once said in an interview), I must say that for someone in her late teens who had only begun writing during those years, they're pretty damn good. And lyrical quality is not black and white--if something isn't extraordinarily cryptic and metaphorical, it doesn't mean it's shallow. As such, the album should not be judged by songs like "You Were Meant For Me," which is so often called "simple," as though that were a bad thing. The song is conversational in tone, but still emotional, and it lacks the juvenile clichis of many pop love songs. Besides, Jewel touches upon a myriad of topics on this album, such as harsh prejudice ("Pieces Of You"), the hardships of friends of a paralyzed young man ("Adrian"), love that is created by art and lasts beyond death ("Painters"), and a young woman who had grown up with an abusive father ("Daddy"). In late November 2002, I saw Jewel in concert. Her final selection was "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and before she played it, she joked about how much she hated her "Kermit the Frog" voice on the original recording of the song. And while it is understandable that Jewel, now well into her twenties, would be so critical of her earlier material, as a fan I must say that her "imperfections" are what make this first album so fantastic, because they characterized her sound and gave it a rawness that simply cannot be faked, and cannot be pulled off by just anyone. She doesn't need overproduction or pitch correction or even that many co-songwriters to create something meaningful and beautiful.
