Great post, Dave! People love to get on their superior high horse when it
comes to music for some reason. I find myself doing it, too, though I TRY not
to.
Country music as a whole is definitely one of my least favorite styles.
However, there is some country that I like quite a lot and there are plenty of
really talented country musicians. If it speaks to some people, more power to
them. Every time Jewel is about to come out with a new album there seems to be
some huge rumour or fear that it will be a country album (every single time!).
Many of her songs I would label country but she's a great musician and the
songs
are beautiful so who cares? As for the bluegrass festival, I don't know
anything about it but it sounds like even if it was initially all bluegrass
that
they've gotten away from that and its become just good music. Reminds me of
CBGB's - the famous punk rock club (that is sadly in jeapordy of losing its
lease
at the moment). The letters stand for Country, Blue Grass, and Blues. When's
the last time a country, blue grass, or blues band played there? LOL. Anyway,
I
don't mind people poking fun at stuff at all; its when people get all
superior and snobby that makes me cringe.

I'm with you on that note.  I hate country but I love folk and bluegrass.  There's so much talent in bluegrass, all the instruments involved, besides it just reminds me of my childhood.  But I'm not going to knock anyone for anything they listen to.  There's a lot of music out there that I just don't understand how anyone likes it, but to each his own I guess.  I guess some people think of bluegrass is country because of the whole down home Southern sound it has, but it really is different than Country, though.  I saw Joe Firstman open for a bluegrass band in Louisville, KY a couple of weeks after I saw him open for Jewel in Evansville, IN last year and that band was just awesome.  It was so fun.
