Well well...I haven't posted to this list in so long, I've almost forgotten how to do it. Isn't that insane? My name is Chelsea Hawk. I was a pretty active member of this list from 1996-1998, and even had my own gathering in New York City, known as "ChelsStock", in 1997. I decided to rejoin again today because, going through the archives, I discovered that it was the 10th anniversary of the forming of this list. Wow. 10 years. Even though I was just a teenager back when I was "known" here...man, that makes me feel old. But it also makes me feel very nostalgic. You see, this was my first fandom. My first real experiences with the net, both the good and the bad, occurred here, through _jewel@smoe.org_ (mailto:jewel@smoe.org) . I remember hearing "Who Will Save Your Soul" for the first time, back in...oh man, probably fall of 1995. On an old VH1 show called "Crossroads" that showcased new artists. So I got POY, and set out to learn everything I could about this Jewel person who had stolen my heart so quickly. Then in...ah, the summer of 96, right as the magic known as JewelStock was being organized, I found this list. I met so many amazing people here, people that will stay in my heart always. Mike Connell. (*waves*...email me sometime, will you? I miss you) Dennis Harris ("ah, goddamn ye Harris brothers!") Alan Bershaw. ("Angel standing by...even if noone else can see them.") Chris Moynihan. Jared Jacobus. Eric Montas. Larry Greenfield. Tom Miles. Amy Neufeld (blue llama in FAO Schwartz!) Russ Rivera. Rachel and Tom O'Brien. Erica Cavallo. Tammy and Rob Campbell. So many more names that escape me in this moment. My involvement with this list changed my life. Made me a better person, in a lot of ways. I wouldn't even be here, in the world, if it weren't for the kindness shown to me by the people here in November 1996. I've moved on to other fandoms now (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Harry Potter, LOST), but the memories made in this one will stay with me for the rest of my life. Happy Anniversary, EDAs. Chelsea Hawk formerly _Chelsface@aol.com_ (mailto:Chelsface@aol.com) , _GroupieGrrl6969@aol.com_ (mailto:GroupieGrrl6969@aol.com) , and...wow. a lot of @kktv.com address. _http://www.livejournal.com/users/evilwillowgirl_ (http://www.livejournal.com/users/evilwillowgirl) _http://raggs.tainted-realities.net_ (http://raggs.tainted-realities.net) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2005 23:31:49 -0500 From: MAC14460@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Happy Birthday & Legal Notices Ibd like to add my Happy Birthday wishes to the Jewel List. And also a big bThank Youb goes out to Mike for his countless hours of management and moderation. Remember the days when Mike moderated the list and had to review literally hundreds of emails a day? Would this list still be here without Mike? Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows? But thanks Mike! Jewelbs crackerjack management team has bmanagedb to get her websites back up (jeweljk.com and Unedited). That only took how many months? Of course they were just so busy handling the many details of all her concert dates, TV appearances, personal appearances and whatever else they do. If therebs any doubt, yes, Ibm being sarcastic. Ibm a little put off by the blegal noticesb at the Unedited site. Yes, I realize itbs standard language and is probably found on virtually all fan sites for major stars. It sets up the ability for Jewels lawyers to go after major violators of copyright laws and is sort of a deterrent to anyone considering doing wholesale selling of her music. It all comes across though, as just a little heavy-handed. Has this really been a big problem? And is it really costing her sales? So much of whatbs been out there for download are songs that havenbt been available for sale through her record label and, are songs that only the real hard-core Jewel fans are even aware of. And how many people is that? What was our last list count Mike? Something like 488? Of course there are many Jewel fans not on the EDA list but even so, how many can that really be? If only 1 out of 100 hardcore Jewel fans is an EDA, webre still not even talking about 50,000 people worldwide, out of a worldwide population of over 6 billion. And shebs sold how many CDs to date? 23 million? 25 million? Something like that? Most of those people like Jewel just enough to buy her CD (and less the current CDs than the old stuff), and donbt probably visit Jewel fansites and donbt download scratchy versions of obscure songs. My point is this. The use of her picture on one of the tiny handful of remaining fansites, and the trading of unreleased angelfood between a few hundred fans is about as bdamagingb to Jewel one rainy day in Texas. In fact, an argument could be made that these minor copyright infractions keep interest in Jewel from fading away completely, and having her fall into the dreaded category of a bhas been.b As an EDA who thoroughly enjoys my Angelfood and InstantLive CD, I have a hard time understanding why she simply doesnbt release so many of those great songs that are always requested at her shows. Jewel-Hint: the market is telling you what they want at every show, youbve got the inventory, make it available. Why not? And why not sell the InstantLive shows over the Internet? Youbd sell a million of them, and wouldnbt even have to tour. Hey Jewel Management b you guys would probably make a big chunk of change off those too. You guys (and Atlantic) need to work on making your artistbs work available. Isnbt that your main job anyway?
