Eliot, gatherings are such an odd thing. They usually happen in two or three areas (NYC/NJ, Boston or SoCal), or else several folks (whether or not Rob wants to be called a "folk", that is what he is -- and an old odd folk at that!) from those areas have to "take the show on the road". I've been to gatherings in Austin (my hometown), Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Nashville, and the occasional stops in Amish country and points further north in New England. I'd go to more gatherings, but few people on this list seem to want to take that leap of faith and let strangers (however long you see a name on the internet, they are still strangers) into their lives anymore, even for a few days... As I said, people who don't have control of their residence don't have much choice. It's the ones that do, and choose not to, that have me scratching my head. Age is a big factor. We're really keen on protecting the younger EDAs. Many of us are older, and have kids of our own. Over the past nine years, we've seen many EDAs finish public school, graduate college and marry and have their own kids. It quickly became an extended family. While the average list member age was 19-20 in 1996, I would guess it might be under 18 at this point. Jewel's marketing seems to have went for the younger crowd since then. Mike is probably the best source for the list demographics. Promoting the EDA philosophy is an expensive proposition, to say the least. Amy and I traveled to SoCal in October to host the EDAF Project Warmth show with Eve Selis. While we stayed with Larry Kookybaka and Jason Vierling for a few nights, the airfare, two days hotel and rental car came out of our own poc kets. While the event was a massive success (one of the top three EDA events I've ever been to), it certainly set me back financially. Thank god we've been able to run the EDAF on a shoestring budget as EDA financial support for their foundation has been practically non-existent. For years I shook my head when people on this list suggested sending money to Jewel's already financially healthy foundation, while letting the foundation bearing their name limp along. I guess it was less glamorous ;-) Bottom line: I'd love to get down to Florida, and meet you and whoever else calls the area home. I have (non EDA) contacts around Orlando who will put me and some friends up. This same person hosted an LRC many years ago, and took the chance of opening their home to strangers (a dozen people, including the performers, stayed over). They loved the experience. If other northeast EDAs are interested, I'm all for a roadtrip! A day at Disney and/or Universal would be fun. Southern beaches are always appealing. A morning spent pitching in at the local community foodbank would make it more meaningful, though. It's your backyard, Eliot - -- what's your suggestion? Harris. So in other words, JEwel is messing around, no fans are enjoying her music anymore, because the communication has been lost. i have foreseen this in 2004 when i quit my site after 4 years loyal service to jewel....but her management was harsh 2 me, with the downloads and see now what the site brings for the fans, nothing. where do we pay for and what do we want?? We just want some new songs, another tour and a record to be made by jewel.. but i guess this all has been vanished in the sky.... i am truly dissapointed, that the year starts like this. it is so unsatisfactory but i guess this is what jewel wants.. the spotlights are maybe not suiting her, and is this limebreak the way she wants to handle it I congratulate jewel for what she has achieved, but not for her plans for 2005, she is only 31, but she seems guttered about the music scene... and anzoff and brothers of management did sack her career even more than her own mother did. i had more respect for the old team than the new team, they never did a job and therefor she should fire the nutters and hire some firecrackers and dedicated supporters of her work and her music.. that's all i say now....before i upset people, but i guess it is pretty much the truth.. Who agrees?? Let's word argue with eachother.. Is Jewel silence logical explainable or it is the last tricker that needed to be pulled ? Was Jewel never that big or spotlight orientated artist?? OR has her desire lost *gring* bye michiel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Jan 2005 15:54:05 -0500 From: Sasafrass Subject: Re: [EDA] jewel announced her career to be finished The site is down because they're rebuilding it to go along with her new album. Thank you for my white elephant exchange gift, it came yesterday and so nice of you to share all the different Angel theme articles. I will have Angel Hair pasta dinner for my sweetie and me on our date night. Yummy! The Sweet Tracks CD from Best Buy with Jewel singing "Blue Christmas" is great, perfect and some more great. She can sure hit the heart spots in me. And of course a token mention for the other artists singing Christmas songs on there to, I suppose there ok. Anyway Sweet Tracks is playing now on repeat. Jennifer, I didn't have it and I tried to find it in 2003 but with no luck, so its a great find to add to my Jewel collection. Thank you so much, the end of Christmas was as nice as the beginning. Deb Hall "Higher Elevations Angel" from Springdale, Washington P.S. I have a lot of snow up here on Lyons mountain, and if anyone wants to come up this way at some point, some day, I have lots of camping room with my cabin in the middle. Its so pretty here, the sun is shining, with snow glistening on the pine trees and about 28 degrees out side. Jewels music fits so well. EDA love to everyone...
