Guess I'll cut the tape... Was watching the Hyundai Holiday Festival On Ice this afternoon and David Pelletier & Jamie Sale skated to Jewel's rendition of Over The Rainbow. I haven't heard that version since last century. It was a nice skate. I'm surprised they or their coach (or whomever) even knew about it. Maybe they Googled "Over The Rainbow" when they were looking for renditions of it. On a related note, I ran into Jamie Sale and Nicole Bobek while Christmas shopping in mid-December here in Binghamton. They were in town for a show that night and were shopping at the downtown store with a bunch of the other skaters. Very sweet gals (or so it seemed...I only "bothered" them a minute or so). If I were 20 years younger I'd have been hopelessly obsessed since that day :-) Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Jan 2005 15:28:05 -0800 From: "Larry Greenfield" Subject: RE: [EDA] Over The Rainbow Since when does age have anything to do with hopeless obsession? First and foremost, I believe Jewel can support whatever she wants to, and no one has the right to complain. Period. The first "right" our system of government guarantees us is the right to pursue the Benjamins (in practice, anyway). Or your principles, or whatever is truly important to you. IMHO, however, after standing on a soapbox for several years, expounding her views that superficial looks, greed and the "system" were not necessarily a good thing, and in the process rallying a hard core group of fans who believed in her and/or those views, Jewel committed to a moral obligation of sorts. It doesn't mean you can't change your views, just say so and move on. Just don't take the "I have no choice" defense. We all have choices. It comes down to what we are willing to give up to keep what we really want in life. As an example, take the NBA basketball star who takes a multi million dollar payment to represent a popular $125 sneaker company so every kid in the country will want a pair so bad it hurts. The "star" later releases a rap song advocating violence towards women, crime, killing cops, etc. and THEN he claims he has no "responsibility" to be a positive role model (which kids need, NOT negative ones), while crying that his "artistic integrity" and "free speech" is being comprimised by folks objecting to his inappropriate release of music that WILL effect some of the kids he markets himself to. Hey, a rap artist can sing about abusing women or killing whomever they like. An NBA star can sell shoes, X-box games or baggy pants with their endorsement (or in the case of major league baseball, Viagra). But common sense says you can't do both, unless you whore your values (or have low values). Christ, be a man and pick your values in life. State them and live them. There's enough selfishness in this world already. Can I at least expect my "folk singers with a message" to be genuine and forthcoming? Again, much of this is speculation. I know Jewel still does benefits for many causes, and I'm sure she's as wonderful a person as you, I or anyone else on this list, but -- if it would take one penny out of each dollar you earned to keep alive a concept that you created and sold to many other people, getting them to buy in with their heart and soul -- could you say "sorry, one cent is more than I ever really believed in the concept in the first place... please move along, as there is nothing to see here!" ? Jewel ain't poor, and the last time I heard, her boyfriend was also the richest prizewinner in the history of rodeo sport, making for quite a healthy household income at that little Stephensville, Texas ranch. I'm sure neither of them has to shop at Wal-Mart or buy their own drinks when they go out on the town! I suspect Jewel's investments are pretty solid as well. (A hell of a lot better than most of ours, I would imagine.) Please don't make excuses for rich people, especially one that could put a web banner link or two on the old Soul City Cafe site and just about fund it that way... or hold a single benefit concert once a year for it. All the "about face" Jewel has done in the past 3-4 years isn't about "satire", it pretty obvious that she just decided that much of what she previously condemned had become attractive to her, whether it be trophy boyfriends, playing the blonde Brittany bimbo role or cashing in on her fans. I just wish she'd release some music and entertain me again! Harris. I'm proud of those of you who are concerned with people outside of your immediate circles... our society is by nature pretty short sighted. One thing is certain -- if you want to make a difference in this world, there are MANY areas you choose from. The earthquake and tsunamis are unique in that they weren't caused by political deed, war or greed -- nature just followed its due course, and reminded us that we are not the masters of the earth, just caretakers that sometimes neglect our job. Sometimes we get it right, too. Everyone needs to do what they feel they should do. Harris. Trust me (tm) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Jan 2005 21:53:40 EST From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC: The point of EDA gatherings... ***On all the "let's have an EDA gathering" posts: Okay, if you can HOST EDA bodies, volunteer your location for a gathering. It's not really kosher to invite guests, then suggest that they pay to stay in a local hotel room. Now I suspect the option of y'all flying or driving up north and renting a room wouldn't appeal to you either... hmmm? If you can't host EDAs, then plan on coming up north. You come up north, and we'll find you places to stay (for free). Northeastern EDAs have a long standing tradition of opening their hearts and homes to other EDAs. We'll usually feed you, too. (Worse case, I'll make you a fine cheese sandwich.) Now don't take it personal -- I understand situations where people don't "own" their residence can become sticky (especially when it involves parents or a spouse who doesn't really "get" the whole EDA thing). It's just that a major part of the EDA phenomenon is that you become family for a day or so, and not just a tourist with a contact in town. We really are a bit overzealous in "protecting" our space and stuff in this country... sharing it seems to increase its value (to me, anyway). But what do I know? I'm only... Harris.
