(or, a modern fish story)... Wow. An INTERNATIONAL effort (well, the USA and Australia, anyway!) to reinstate Soul City Cafe to its original purpose... nice. Well, if the original domain name is too expensive, or we have copyright issues with the previous owners ;-) ... I have a registered domain name we might could use: SoleCityCafe.com "Sole", as in alone, abandoned, distinctive, individual and indivisable. (It might mean a tasty cut of fish as well. Or the bottom of one's foot, which supports one, along with one's values, hopes and dreams.) I don't think the musicians would notice anyway -- they usually can't spell worth a damn! (This where the backpedalling usually begins... ;-)" No point in kabashing a tradition then ;) I live with my parents, and unfortunately they would not take kindly to an EDA invasion of their home, although there is a local park about within walking distance of my home and an LRC there would be a cakewalk to set up. Okay technically its not a living room per se, but we could have an EDA gathering. There are 3 hotels within 3 miles of the park too. Also, I have friends who work for "the Mouse" and others work in the hotel business that might be able to get us some discounts or freebees etc. (no i did not say frizbees). Finally, I know southwest florida still has lots of cleaning up to do, my aunt and uncle own a real estate agency in the area hard hit by charley, they might be willing to donate the use of a house for a weekend to EDAF for a good cause. I also used to volunteer with the Central Florida Red Cross, I'm sure I can get in contact with South Florida Chapters looking for volunteers if you wanted to turn a gathering into a EDAF funtion. In closing, ya cant stay here- but LRC is doable and I'm willing to coordinate an EDAF project, if theres interest. Centralfloridaangel __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Subject: [EDA] First post in a while... Hey there, I haven't posted in ages but I'm sure some of you will remember me... :) I wanted to chime in on some things... Firstly, SoulCityCafe - obviously when Jewel dismantled her management company and hired an independant company to take over, things like SoulCityCafe and Higher Ground were going to be sacrificed. The reason Jewel was able to take on those projects was because she had an already established company and body of staff able to actually do the work... they were all hired for the purpose of running her career, but eventually as the company expanded they took on more and more projects. Obviously, as all these organisations were not for profit, the whole thing was bankrolled by Jewel's earnings - or at least the cut management took of her earnings (probably about 20%). When you're selling millions of copies of each album that's sustainable, but Jewel's recent record sales would not be able to sustain the overhead of something like this. So of course it was a financial thing!... of course Jewel would have continued having her own company dedicated to managing her career (and being able to take on side projects like SCC) if she could afford to do it... any musician would prefer a team of 20 people dedicated to just them rather than having to share resources with a whole hierarchy of artists. It does suck that SCC had to be shutdown, but that's the way it goes... I'm sure if Jewel was in a position to continue it she would. Secondly, the website - Musictoday (a fan company) are taking over Jewel's fan management and have promised a new website and a new unedited section in January - it's very likely the old site has been taken down so that a new one can launch after the new year. Could be wishful thinking - but it's not a server error, it's simply that the site has been removed. So that's the most sensible explanation. The rumour about Atlantic rejecting Jewel's most recent album is just that... a RUMOUR. And it doesn't even come from a source at Atlantic... it comes from a totally dodgy source and it would be really stupid to jump to any conclusions about that. It's very unlikely that it's true anyway... if you look at the other artists on Atlantic's roster, Jewel is at least among their Top 5 in terms of sales... even on the level of 0304. She's one of their staple acts... they've spent shitloads of money on her over the years developing her career and her fanbase to the point where they could spend NO money marketing an album (if she happened to deliver something very uncommercial) and still profit from it just cause the fans would go out and buy it. So I don't think we've got a whole lot to worry about there. Record companies have been known to reject albums from some artists.. but it's always those with a very low sales history - artists like Juliana Hatfield (which someone mentioned), or Aimee Mann (a famous example). I'm not saying Jewel's new management haven't been shit... they have been. But welcome to the world of music management companies... this is what most fans go through. We were hugely lucky to have the J-Team looking after her career for so long... most fans don't get treated the way we were. We were spoiled and so now, obviously, we're all pissed off cause it hasn't been as good. But there's no sense blaming Jewel - it's not personal and of course she'd have it back to the way it was because it benefitted her as well. Let's just hope Musictoday are decent and get things happening again. They also run Dave Matthews fanclub, and he's renowned for being very "fan friendly" so maybe that's a good sign. Anyway... that was a bit long-winded... and for all those who know me, this is an appropriately lengthy post for my first post in ages! Hope you're all having a great xmas/new year. Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 2004 08:42:30 -0600 From: "Kovacs, Mirinda" Subject: RE: [EDA] SJC: Old school drop-outs pop up recently... BECOME totally obnoxious? LOL. Oh you were serious. Yes, I guess we can and have gotten way more obnoxious than this in the past. And since someone was actually lamenting the loss of Derrick we could easily fill the bill.>>>> Amy, I hope you know that I don't miss him! My post said that at least he brought life to this list. Until this week there has been no life to speak of for quite a while. If you want my personal opinion, I couldn't stand the guy and had numerous off list arguments with him. Then I realized that was what he wanted and ignored him. I'm loving actually reading conversations on here again. And I love the fact that they don't have to be centered around Jewel. She has been nothing but a disappointment lately. I don't care if it is her managements fault or not, she still has a voice. IF things like SCC really meant anything to her she wouldn't have let it go by the wayside. I think that she has really changed directions since being with Ty. If he makes her happy that's great. But I think it is becoming apparent that she can't be with him and be as dedicated to her career as she used to be. Or maybe she just doesn't want to be anymore. I'm not sure. And I guess that since we have to communication with her or her management we probably won't find out. I could go on and on but I will spare you all. - -Mi Rinda The maternal angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 2004 18:15:01 EST From: BlugreenH2O@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] SJC: Who Will Sell Your Soul (City)? I always have reserves for my fun and vices...I'm taking some of that and instead of buying me a 6 pack and some cigarretes,...I'll send some $ over there ...don't have to be money, a lot of places in all our communities are gathering clothes, shoes, cans, hygene goods, etc to send over there..pick up your local paper and you will find a bunch of places that are doing this. One thing I was inspired by Jewel way back in '97, was to put myself in someone else's shoes before thinking that my life and it's circumstances, people, etc. are all that matters; all of the sudden, my problems are not so big anymore. Even though some days I still think my world crumbling is the only thing that matters.Do onto others... 100,000+ people dead, 5,000,000+ displaced....I can't think that my car payment being late is as important as this... Please try to help in whatever way you can....if not material, then please pray a lot.
