I planned on a Nashville stop, then a trip through Castleberry/Orlando, then on to the Everglades and Key West to go scuba diving. That's still on my "to do" list... I'm sure some enterprising East Coast (ie, NY and Boston area EDAs) would be up to driving down IF we had a place (or two) to stay. Are you volunteering a place? (This where the backpedalling usually begins... ;-) Give it some thought, and let us know. We should arrrange an LRC while we're down there (we've gotta know someone who will be in the area). Of course, our SoCal artists don't have much reason to go to Florida in the winter. Canadian and northern musicians -- that's another story! 60 of us did the Great Looney Tunes Theme Park Adventure several years ago in New Jersey (followed by a day of paintball warfare, where EDAs kicked some serious National Guard weekend warrior butt). I'll come, but you're the host, Eliot. ***Then Deborah posted about the domain name SoulCityCafe.com being "parted out" in a J-Team yard sale... I'm tempted to buy the domain and then on the homepage put a gravestone with the words "RIP -- Half-ass commitment to a wonderful idea leaves a lot of people holding their hearts in their lap" Couldn't Jewel and her "team" have just paid a couple of years worth of $3.95/year hosting and kept the results of the one and only season online for a while? Or simply given the domain name rights to someone who really cared about the Soul City Cafe concept, and let it live despite Jewel's obvious indifference and cavalier attitude toward the incredibly vibrant community that had grown around it? God, the way they put that project on ubrupt hold and left the Soul City residents hanging was disgusting. Evaluation my tail, they bailed (again). It wasn't a question of not being able to afford to continue Soul City, it was simple greed and apathy rearing its ugly head. More than anything else the new-and-improved "Jewel corporation" has done, THAT is the absolute most embarrassing. Jewel should title her next album "Show Me the Money"... 'cause goldfish DO bounce, if you throw them hard enough! (Okay, wanna know what I really think?) Harris. I of course wouldnt be able to go, being 14 and stuck way up in MA but it'd be fun to hear about. I'm going with the high school marching band over the summer. (we play the music to wwsys and Stand sometimes in the stands) So, Im going to get to see DIsney overrun hehe. I'm thinking that it was just an oversight. I also noticed some other "renewal" items that fell by the wayside and I'm convinced it's just an "oops" that the present "management" or left-over J-teamers hadn't even begun to think of. At least the jeweljk.com domain is paid up for almost another two-years. If they had "oopsed" and let that one expire, I'm almost certain jeweljk.com would have been gobbled up by a domain-watcher and had become a porn site the very next day. (much like the official ride-with-the-devil site did when Universal let that one slip) > ***Then Deborah posted about the domain name SoulCityCafe.com being > "parted > out" in a J-Team yard sale... {snip} > > Couldn't Jewel and her "team" have just paid a couple of years worth of > $3.95/year hosting and kept the results of the one and only season online > for a > while? Hey your right its gone now. Last week people at her site forum were saying that the new owners of Atlantic rejected Jewels new album. They were wondering what that would mean if she is stuck with her contract and owes them another album. Years of legal battles and no music? I hope its not true but she finishes an album and nobody publicizes anything? It seems strange that nothing is mentioned in press good or bad. Not a peep since she started recording a long time ago. Atlantic did the same thing to another favorite artist of mine Juliana Hatfield. She recorded an album called Gods Foot at Bearsville Studios that Atlantic rejected and all her fans still want desperately. Sound familiar? I hope Jewel is ok and she kicks her managers ass to start the new year off with a little publicity. Its long overdue. I've read with interest the recent digests discussing the list losing its passion, its spirit, indeed its soul. And now it seems that a part of that soul is up for sale. We can wax lyrical and cling to the belief that we, particularly the old timers, are still here largely for Jewel when we know that it's about the community that has formed out of this list. Its informal and we drift from time to time, god knows I'm guilty of not staying in touch with people from here :-) , but when someone is in need of help due to illness, etc or an EDA is starting out in their musical career, we come together to help. Essentially, Jewel has in many ways abandoned us and some of her ideals, but we hold strong. Soul City Cafi was a tremendous idea that at the end of the day was, I guess, dropped due to not making enough money, if any. Nevermind that it was a gift to the up-and-comers of the music world that had the potential to generate enormous goodwill and support for Jewel. So, enough rambling. Here's the deal. Let's come together again as a community and rebuild the cafi. There's so many people who can benefit from a site like this and it would serve as a great extension of the EDAs and indeed the EDAF. I've submitted a proposal to purchase the domain name (subject to the amount demanded!!) and turn it into an EDA project. It's going to need sponsorship to ensure its long-term survival and I believe that any excess profits generated by the site in the long-term should be turned over to the EDAF to put to best use. There's a number of other issues such as needing designers for the site, etc, but thats a discussion best left until the final fate of the domain is decided. As the asking price may be quite high, a group purchase could also be considered. Anyway, enough for now. Think it over guys and gals. I should have the quote back in a few days. Deb - I guess you may have also submitted a proposal? I'll contact you off the list about this. - - Steven Neville (-Harris tm) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2004 13:31:50 EST From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] SJC: Old school drop-outs pop up recently... Yes, I guess we can and have gotten way more obnoxious than this in the past. And since someone was actually lamenting the loss of Derrick we could easily fill the bill. We really need to find Selena and get her butt back on this list. Not to mention Igor. And Carter. And Alex Stamou. And Crunch. Oh and so many others.... Ok, I say we pool our money and buy up SoulCity.com. After all, I think its been for sale for quite a while, maybe we could get a bargain basement price. Everyone, list your ideas for what we could do with it if we had it (serious ideas or sarcastic ones equally welcome). ;-) Amy, the Llama Queen Angel www.edaf.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2004 22:23:01 EST From: NeOblCar@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] SJC: SCC In a message dated 12/29/2004 6:04:58 PM Eastern Standard Time, W1GGY2@aol.com writes: Ok, I say we pool our money and buy up SoulCity.com.
