Jewel was very cute with her ways, Ty got a bunch of airtime (when in actuality no one knows wtf he is!) Anyway it's just my opinion. I thought we'd learned by now & agreed that artist bashing shouldn't happen on this list, oh after, the Michlle Branch thing, the Britney Spears thing, and the Beyonce thing. It's a Jewel themed list...and while I don't demand everything stay on topic 24/7, especially with it slow, I think there are more constructive things to do than bash other musicians & cause arguements on the list. While I'm not Ashlee Simpson's #1 fan... people seem to be making a ridiculously huge deal about this. First of all, it was a vocal backing track, to make her voice sound fuller & stronger... she was actually singing as well, and that's a common thing, *especially* for many pop artists to do, *especially* on an important TV performance where a good performance could move a lot of your CD's... I'm not saying it's not 'cheating' with your performance, or that it's not disappointing that to mirror your performance on the CD, & you have to double up vocals to sound as good, & I prefer artists who don't have to produce the hell out of their live shows *or CD's, but hell, the only reason anyone cares is because she was caught. I caught the vocal backing track in the first performance, at the beginning when they had a problem with it echoing, it didn't take them messing up. It's such a common thing in pop, that it didn't surprise me when it happens, but somehow, all of these people who didn't like Ashlee Simpson to begin with, are all "AH-HA! WE CAUGHT YOU, OH MY GOD!" and acting like they were surprised when they thought she sounded like crap anyways. It's so immature. No one ever claimed she could sing as well as her sister, but it's not like she's completely without any singing talent. She needs vocals lessons, and someone to actually teach her how to use her voice so she doesn't have to rely on back up tracks. I think she actually has potential to become a better singer in the future, I think she's just been too easy to let others lead her through the business who have more experience, and pushed her into stuff before she was probably ready for it. I mean, who's recording their album BEFORE ever performing a live show? I think that's indicative of that. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 09:38:18 EDT From: NeOblCar@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Ashlee Simpson! Jewel lip-sync'ed the National Anthem at the Superbowl from a recording she had made earlier in the day ... but don't blame others when it screws up. That is the telling part of Ashlee's personality that is now out there and the more she doesn't take responsibility for that is going to sink her. Had she been an experienced artist, working her way up and performing on the road, instead of having everything handed to her, she would have taken charge and fixed the goof when it happened ... ala Elvis Costello when he switched a song a few bars into it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 18:23:57 EDT From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC: Trip to California & Project Warmth show Hi everyone! Dennis the Harris and I got home Monday night from an incredible trip to Southern California! We started out in L.A. at Larry Greenfield's house (aka Kookybaka House). We got in late so we didn't have too much time to chat but we knew we'd be back on Sunday. Thursday and Friday were spent down in San Diego on the beaches of La Jolla watching the seals (they took the ropes away on Seal Beach so now you can get practically close enough to pet them! Of course the seals are none too thrilled about it) and Balboa Park. Just thinking about it makes me miss that lovely sunshine! Saturday night was the big night...the Project Warmth show in Encinitas. What a fabulous, magical evening! Unfortunately, once again there were no other EDA's present that I'm aware of. But there were about 250 everyday angels of the non-Jewel-list variety lucky enough to attend which translated to a room full of coat and blanket donations for the homeless. All of the artists - Peggy Lebo, Eve Selis, Mary Dolan, and Patty Zlaket - just rocked. In the words of one of the Seaside Church's employees "this church has never rocked like this!" which is saying something since apparently they have frequent concerts there. Patty even wrote a song inspired by Project Warmth which was really awesome. There were at least four separate standing ovations spread throughout the show. Anyway, we hope to have some pictures up on the EDAF website soon. After the show Dennis and I went to Lake Elsinore to stay at the Vierling's house. We got to see Jason and Sonja's little girl again, who's now walking and talking a mile a minute as well as their newest baby who's already almost a year old and adorable. Sunday evening it was back up to Larry's for a great garlic chicken dinner and Monday we flew back to the East Coast where it feels much colder than it really is after California. So thanks to Larry and Jason & Sonja for your hospitality! Its always great to see you guys. I wish we could have seen more EDA's but all in all it was a phenomenal trip!
