I just remeber when he opened for her in Milwaukee on the Spirit tour. Before he came onstage...he was talking off stage with a mic and said something like "This is God talking. The best and hottest singer in the world is about to come out and entertain you. No, it's not Jewel, smart asses, it's Mr. Steven Poltz. Clap Now." Then he did his set, and was very chatty (if you haven't seen him, think of how chatty Jewel is at an acoustic show), and before his last song he says "This is my last song. I would like to thank you in advance for the standing ovation." Thought that was pretty funny, cause most opening acts that I have seen with the exception of Ryan Cabrera on the Jessica Simpson tour, don't really talk to the audience. They sing some songs, say that they have a CD out, thank the headliner for bringing them out, and MAYBE tell a 30 sec story on how a song came to them. But Steve was actually an entertainer, not just a singer. >From: Harrisbros@aol.com >To: jewel@smoe.org >Subject: [EDA] NJC: This LRC is a golden opportunity! >Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2004 13:47:32 EDT > > > *** Mike Connell wrote: > > >Be careful Denny, I hear Connecticut is a hangin' state. > >Mikey, you know I'll hang in ANY state with EDAs and good music playing... > >;-) > >Any true Jewel fan located in CT/RI/MA who doesn't at least attempt to make >this show absolutely has a screw loose! Here's an observation. Did you notice that in the first part of the This Way tour, she was perfoming Break Me, and not This Way. That was becuase Break Me was the single at the time. Then they released This Way as a single and she starts singing it on the tour! But then Break Me is off the setlist...hmmm...either way This Way is the title track and I think should've been sung at the shows if it was worthy enough to name the album after. But when Break Me wasn't a huge smash...she stops singing it. I don't get it, you don't like the song becuase it didn't do well? If you thought the songs were good enough to be a single and you were proud of them, why wouldn't you sing them? If you didn't believe in them enough to do them at your shows, then why were they released as a single. But I suppose it is more of a record company decision than hers. But it would be nice to hear songs like Jupiter, This Way, and 2 Become 1 and Stand on the next tour. Maybe you don't need to play them everynight, but you could atleast have the band know it if people are screaming for the song all night. And another thing. She had said before Spirit came out that Deep Water was a gift to her fans and she hopes all of them can hear it one day...then how come you RARELY play it live anymore? Hmmm? Whatever she does I'll still love her to death....and i honestly think if she puts the right single out on the next album, it can be another 6+million selling cd. Everything Breaks could be a single if they mixed it right in the studio. And mone more thing lol, how come a lot of the singles were not the same version as on the cd...becuase they re-mixed them to be singles so they could do well....it is kind of annoying to have to pay $13.00 for an import cd to get the radio versions of This Way and Break Me. But let me tell you, Break Me was by far the best radio edit...I LOVE the music from the radio version. Know where i can get just the music for it? One more thing (sorry) Where can I download the This Way video...still haven't seen it:( Can someone email it to me maybe? Thanks <3 matt ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2004 06:01:53 -0500 From: "Matt Sullivan" Subject: [EDA] This Year's Summer Tours What other major shows have you guys been too this summer that kicked ass, besides the lovely Jewel, of course? I didn't really do many concerts this summer, which is unusual for me, but oh well:) Saw LeAnn Rimes in July in Milwaukee...she was incredible, but I was upset that she didn't sing the new songs off the greatest hits cd, like This Love...ahhh... Neways, Mark Oakley was on tour with her and I spotted him by some food thing and talked about Jewel, and he ended up getting our names on the meet n greet after the show through a radio station, so we got to meet her which was cool. (saving the best, next to Jewel, for last). Then I saw Simple Plan for the second time this year over the summer. They kicked ass like always. (and finally) Jessica Simpson! Now don't hate becuase I know a lot of you think she over sings (which she does sometimes), but she really is incredible. This is the second time I saw her, the first time being when she first came out at a radio concert. And oddly enough, was in the third row for both. She was incredible! No lip-syncing like Britney, no raunchy dancers like Christina (although she was dancing rather provockitivley herself) just her incredible voice. It was part of Summerfest in Milwaukee, and she actually filled in the date for Christina (who I also had tickets for.) When Christina cancelled, it was all over the radio that Jessica should replace her and she did. I was so excited. (and a quick note: jessica sold more tickets in the first 10 minutes than christina did during the 30 days it was on sale before it was cancelled.) There were so many people there and it was just incredible! She is amazing, she was also real chatty, posed for pictures, walked the stage most of the time, and it wasn't over the top like Britney's shows are where it is more of a theatrical thing than a concert. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. I could go on for hours but, I'm sure I'm already annoying someone. BTW, Ryan Cabrera was there and was giving away signed promo CD's after his set and I got one so ha! And the of course Jewel was a highlight. I've seen here more in other states than here in Wisconsin, so it was a treat to have her here! I saw her in Milwaukee and it was such a nice evening, attendance was 1,283 (my cousin's fiance works at the venue, i really don't think there were that many people there so maybe that's how many tickets were sold. It was not promoted, you didn't hear it on the radio except the afternoon of the show so I think that's pretty good showing for something that wasn't promoted). She was real chatty. It was really cool becuase when you looked at the stage you could see the city in the background, and when she looked at the crowd she saw them and Lake Michigan. This was the first concert at the venue to have reserved seating, so there were errors on the tickets. Like it said section 103, blue, floor, not elevated, and they were really bleacher seats on the side, so I don't know what the floor tickets were printed as. So I'm sure there were plenty of unhappy people, and I'm sure the venue got in trouble for screwing that up. But, either way, me and my friend snuck down to the floor during the first song...as I think a lot of people did. InstantLive is so cool and I think that $25 to have the concert for life really wasn't alot...and there were SOOOO many people in line to get it. I was supposed to see her two days later in Green Bay, but I had no clue that the show would sell out 45 minutes after it went on sale...and that's a 1,800 seat venue. Tickets were cheap, however, becuase it was part of the casino's 10th anniversary or something silly like that. And I guess it was the show not to miss...she sang nicotine love, and that Joe Fistman opened for her. (He was supposed to open in Milwaukee but was switced with some annoy lady who sang half her set in french...). So dammit I missed the show not to miss. And all the tickets that were on ebay for it went immediatly under the "buy it now" option. Kind of upset that you can't buy the shows from the tour on the website...Get it at the venue or not at all. And I'm sure they would have a lot of sales. Doesn't make sense, they just can't reburn the CD? Do they throw the copies out or something. And I was under the impression that you could buy the cd's later on the website if you didn't buy it at the venue. Okay, I'm sorry for dragging this on. But post about the concerts you went to this summer, I love reading about them! P.S. Going to see sarah mclachlan next friday P.S.S. STILL thinks the 0304 Afterglow tour should've happened...is it to late lol?ww ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2004 10:03:05 EDT From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Some Poltz concessions... I can't say as I have any particularly interesting first hand Jewel stories (there was the time she came into the bar a bunch of us EDA's went to after the Storytellers taping and promptly left as soon as she found out we were there) but Steve stories, hell yeah! Bar hopping with Poltz, Jewel's band and Atz Lee in New Orleans was a lot of fun. Ted's LRC had several stories alone...the next morning when I was putting on my makeup in the bathroom and Steve came in and asked if he could take a shower. I was like "sure" but was too shy to look. OK, I did see his butt. Then I drove him down from Massachussetts to NYC and made him an hour late for his sound check at the Bottom Line. I only found out the other night during the boat cruise show why during that car ride he kept asking me to repeat Joni Mitchell's song Court and Spark about 10 times...apparently when his sister Kathy went away to college she left him all her records (just like in Almost Famous) and he played that song all the time when he was missing her. Awww!! Hot Dog Fest...that was the first time most of us had ever hung out with Steve (and Stinky!). Too many great times to list them all. Hope to see some of you later today! You're likely to hear some real beautiful sing-along love songs like "Hand Job on a Church Bus"! :-) Amy Llama-Neufeld ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2004 11:25:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Josie Rathbone Subject: [EDA] Re: 0304 Meaning Jewel said that 0304 is to be a statement, a soundtrack to the years 2003-2004.
