It's just retarded that they won't make them accessible online to fans who want them. Atlantic is getting their cut. She can do so much more, and she has in the past. I hope this is not a new trend for her. Her last tour was fantastic, with so much energy it was incredible, and fun to attended. This tour was kind of boring. Also another comment, what's everybody's feelings toward the payfor exclusives on the web site? I personally am not going to renew my subscription since I get nothing downloadable, and have to buy a 3rd party program to record the streaming audio and video. The exclusive clips are ok, nothing too exciting, and no web casts or demo tracks, no set lists either. Also people who used ticketmaster got better seats than me, and they paid $40.50 for their seats as opposed to the $65 I paid through the fan club. I also lost money when they cancelled the tour the first time around last August or September. I was refunded my ticket money for the two shows I was going to see, but I was not refunded ticket handling fees (if there even was any to begin with) so I was out another $15 dollars. Sorry to seem so negative, but I think the web site is capable of more, and I know Jewel can do better in her performances as well. Later, Jeff - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I don't know if it is because I had saw her in Cleveland a few nights before but ... basically same setlist...oh how I hate that! Although she played 2 of my "requests". Those being Studies in Love # 12 and Nicotine Love. I tried to get God's Gift to Woman, some new ones, Carnivore... but nope. Plus I had some rare ones I knew she wouldn't play Cruise Control or Tenderness. Darn it, guess I souldn't be controlling the whole show ;-) Anyway the question about InstantLive is on my cd they don't have the duet with Joe Firstman (who I am now a fan of like I think everyone here has now become). So I wrote to them and hope I get a response. On the cd it goes from WWSYS to a long screaming and roaring crowd to Jewel thanking us and getting ready to do Chime Bells... I am assuming that isn't right. Do any of you who have Instant cds with Everybody Reminds Me of You on it or are they not allowed to put that on there? Plus if anyone has anything LIVE of Joe please email me cause I thought his cd The War of Woman doesn't do him justice. I thought the show was awesome, definitely worth the drive up there.. My only complaint of the night was the InstantLive CDs - First they wouldn't take credit card (Said it was too hard to use that w/ the exchange rate or whatever), then they weren't going to take US money.... It took 20 min of them all "consulting" each other to tell me it would be $35 USD ($40 Canadian)... I thought that was a rip-off, but I really wanted to get it, so I did! (Didn't like any of the t-shirts really anyway) The guy was kind of a jerk about the whole thing too... I pointed out that on the ticket it said $25 USD, his answer was "Well, you're not in the US are you?" Oh well.... I'm over it, the CDs turned out great :) Heather ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2004 10:08:28 EDT From: Dave0828@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel over singing In a message dated 7/20/2004 9:52:10 AM Eastern Standard Time, jhparkin@go-concepts.com writes: Jewel over sings her songs, and extends them way too long. This sort of thing is a debate for a lot of live artists. A lot of performers feel that the audience isn't there to hear the songs exactly as they appear on a studio recording - otherwise they could sit at home and listen to that. They feel that if they give you something different, you'll be getting "something more." Others feel the exact opposite way. It's a struggle. Over the years I've seen some of my favorite artists play shows that are exactly like the album releases, then on a subsequent tour there is so much improv that the original material is almost recognizable. Finally, they find a way to incorporate both the exact replication of cd released material and their improvisational skills in a way that seems almost seamless. It's something that many artists struggle with, be cause as artists they sometimes feel stifled by doing the exact same somas the exact same way night after night. The best find a way to appease all of the desires of their fans. Jewel seems to do a pretty good job of this most of the time. It's easier to stretch out on a solo show though and not have to stay within a framework that is sometimes dictated to you in a band situation. I think that the reason we're seeing Jewel go back to the Jewel we all came to love is that this tour in particular has been quite cathartic for her after the turmoil of a year ago. And of course, we'd all love to see setlists the like of what she did at Jewelstock. But, she's also not that same person anymore. Anyhow - those are my thoughts - take them for what their worth. Thanks so much for all your efforts on behalf of myself and other EDAs. I got my two sets of InstantLive CDs via snail mail (just days after the two concerts ended) and it was some of the best incoming mail I have ever received!! Thanks for risking life and limb by heading into two Jewel concerts with a wad of EDA money (we all know what shady characters populate Jewel shows) :) and grabbing up dozens of CDs for EDAs around the country unable to attend the Indianapolis and South Bend IN shows. It was a very self-sacrificing thing for you to do and it's a kindness that is most readily enjoyed by members of the eda community. Definently brought back some nice memories of seeing her in the past. I was at the Massey Hall show in 2002 as well and I gotta say that the venue is way better than the ACC. There was a lady who sold printed sketches of Jewel outside the building right after the concert and I grabbed one right away. It was very nice and well worth it. I wish I had gotten an Instant Live CD, but I was in a rush to be somewhere else so I had to leave quickly. Hope everyone else had a good time also. Well aware that long-time fans had difficulty swallowing her candied dance-pop makeover on last yearbs 0304 disc, Jewel used Saturday night to return to her coffeehouse-pop roots. And after recent reports of an onstage meltdown, the folky was intent on reminding everyone about her mid-b90s success with a hit-filled show. Singer-songwriter Joe Firstman opened the night with his quirky, yet sometimes schmaltzy, love tunes. Alternating between electric piano and acoustic guitar , Firstman was both Five For Fighting and Joni Mitchell and showed his appreciation for the receptive Canadian crowd with a decent cover of Mitchellbs "A Case Of You." At times, his powerful bass neared operatic and with his entirely white, open-shirted ensemble, his romance-novel-cover looks made the young women in the audience swoon. Yes, 20 and 30-something, Chapters-loving, Starbucks-drinking, blonde women were out in full force, but their RW & Co. shopping boyfriends also had something to swoon for when the curvaceous Alaskan folk-tart finally took the stage. Amidst the whistling and the "Yowzabs," Jewel assumed her position next to a small table with a bouquet of flowers, bottled water and a binder of lyrics. This was both the earthy Jewel, sporting a simple, frilly black camisole top and jeans, and the glam-girl Jewel, getting a bit dolled up with stylish bangs and silver hoop earrings. With her crystal-clear, child-like voice that swung from chirpily sweet to sharply soulful, she took advantage of Massey Hallbs pristine sound and began the night with hardcore fan favourites like "Near You Always" and "Life Uncommon." She even yielded to a fanbs request for the obscure "Boy Needs A Bike," which prompted a charmingly quick practice session that drew chuckles from the crowd as she consulted her lyric book and dryly remarked, "Yes, I wrote all of these." Jewelbs stand-up comedian banter between songs was also razor sharp. She threatened to choke sneezers during the show (which was being recorded to be sold after the show), relayed a dream about Bob Dylan coming onto her and provided anecdotes about naked stalker fans, getting her shoulders stuck in the sweaty armpit sockets of her male fans and gave advice to her dentist fans: "Donbt look at the teeth, look at the boobies." The rest of the show was all about appeasing the crowd. Loose renditions of "Hands" and "Foolish Games" sounded more vulnerable and less cheesy, while slow versions of "You Were Meant For Me" and the excellent "Break Me" were given a new fragileness. She even doled out an acoustic "Intuition," making the songb s darkly comic satire more apparent than the jiggy-pop studio version. For the encore, Jewel traded in her guitar for a dulcimer on the simple new song "Choose Me," while her infamous yodelling got the audience clapping along. Say what you want about her often banally produced records; live, Jewel is a gem of a solo performer whobs both self-aware and truly, outrageously funny. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V9 #205 ***************************
