And when did Dennis and Woody get out of the pen? Is there another greasy, greasy, buttered-up (Spammed-up?!) Poltz-reference to be found - "Morning Woody"? Ah, thanks Mr. BB for those song insights. And thanks to everyone posting the lyrics and other interesting items here in recent days. Cool runnings. Speaking of the two-word Inner Change - did anyone happen to grab the door to that venerable San Diego coffee-house?! I remember we came across it venturing out pre-Pajama Jam, but, it was definitely not something that I could carry on to a plane back to Canada. Ah, brings back memories of fish tacos and rolling waves along Ocean Beach. If these new songs are the way Jewel is going (Alice in Wonderland, I belong to You, and that song with the sitar) then I will be _very_ pleased. For that matter, just reading the past few setlists have made me smile. Now if she would only come back Texas way. I've listened to Alice in Wonderland alot this morning, and really like it (though I have to stick my tongue out at one line, but that is a private joke... :-) ) You know, Dennis was right (may lightning strike me down for admitting that in public) we need one of them old fashioned, big-ass EDA gatherings... I just got an email back from Channel Five, the TV station that are broadcasting Lyon's Den in the UK, which said that they have "the rights to broadcast all 13 episodes" but "Jewel only appears in Episode 6" Chris. http://www.jewelfan.co.uk : Jewel - Pieces Of UK http://www.jewelkilcher.nl/forum/ : not the Official Jewel Forum ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 18:04:28 EDT From: GAMGRIFF@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Nice review Here is another nice Jewel review. Wente By Jim Harrington - CONTRIBUTOR A capacity crowd turned out to watch sexy singer-songwriter Jewel shine in the first of three Bay Area performances. The multi-talented artist will wrap up her short stay with another solo concert tonight at the Historic Mountain Winery in Saratoga. The 30-year-old former Alaskan made headlines across the country following a show last month at a New Hampshire casino that drew less-than-rave reviews from fans. She allegedly insulted fans and, in general, acted very unprofessionally at the concert. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, paying customers responded by lining up to scream obscenities at her tour bus as it departed. Based on her showing at Wente, which was full of good humor, big personality and friendly demeanor, one has to wonder if either the controversial gig was a very off night for the performer or if folks in New Hampshire overreacted. Despite her superstar status, Jewel acted as if she were among friends as she strolled leisurely through her superb 14-song set. She took the stage without fanfare as she casually walked up to the microphone and grabbed her guitar. Still, the pretty blonde couldn't help but make a scene as her appearance was greeted with lusty whoops and hollers from the males in the audience. Eight years or so before, just as her sleeper debut, "Pieces of You," was beginning to pick up steam, Jewel might have acted poorly to such a welcome. At that time, she seemed to have a chip on her shoulder and wanted to be seen as an "important artist," not a pinup queen. But Jewel has mellowed over time and now seems to take things as they come. "Hello. It's a pleasure to be back here," said Jewel, whose appearance last year was a definite highlight of Wente's 2003 schedule. "Catcalls are always welcome." She began the night by revisiting her debut, purring her way through lines of probable heartbreak on "Near You Always." The lyrics cut like scissors through old love letters as she poured out: "Your hands are in my hair, but my heart is in your teeth." Jewel has always had her moments as a lyricist. The Wente crowd was clearly touched by the stark diary-like honesty found in old songs "Hands" and "Foolish Games." But she's also produced her share of true stinkers. Luckily, she's at a point now in her career that she can pass on such sophomoric and overly sugary tunes as "Adrian" and "Little Sister. The best news is that Jewel's songwriting seems to be catching up with her stellar voice. She's currently working on a new album, probably due out in early 2005, and she played a good handful of recent compositions Wednesday. It's unclear whether these songs have titles yet, as she didn't call the tunes from the stage, but it's very clear that they rank among the very best of her catalog. She mastered sincerity and longing in her lyrics at an early age. But she's now added irony, humor and bite to her arsenal. At times, the words of these new tunes recalled the expert writing of fellow-folkies John Prine and Dan Bern. Still, Jewel's staggering vocal range remains the biggest selling point of her show. She can go from a jazzy scat reminiscent of Dianne Reeves to the bluesy longing of Cassandra Wilson to the anguished scream of Janis Joplin - -- often in the same song. And she's not afraid to try something new. She slowed down one of her best-known numbers, "Morning Song," to a near crawl. She sounded as if she were whispering in a lover's ear, pleading to forget the day and come back to bed, as she absolutely melted the audience with this old favorite off "Pieces of You." She took the upbeat single "Intuition" from 2003's "0304," a likable, although unlikely, collection of dance-pop numbers, and did it up as a folk song. Thanks to the strong lyrics and Jewel's tender hand, it worked marvelously. And what a voice it is. By the end of the night, following a rich main-set-closing interpretation of "Who Will Save Your Soul," Jewel had run the vocal gamut, from jazz and blues to folk and rock. So what could she do for an encore? She yodeled. Out of an evening full of treasures, that one may have been the richest.
