I enjoyed the people I was sitting with, but the show was a disappointment as far as Jewel goes. I blame the crowd though, and I'm also a little peeved about the adding of the second show. I think those of us who bought our tix in Feb, got screwed and we should have been given the chance to change to the earlier show. As for the concert itself, I blame the crowd. People were drunk and rude, and it was a shameful display on the people of New Hampshire's part ( and I'm FROM this state) as well as the casino. People were talking at the top of their lungs and could care less if Jewel was on stage at all. She played nothing that I couldn't hear on her albums....which isn't why we all love Jewel. I was the typical Hampton Crowd of losers who go to shows @ the casino ballroom every summer and could give a shit who was there. I felt bad for Jewel, and worse for my fianci who dropped $400 on 2 velvet rope tix as a B-day gift for me. So, to sum it all up, I should have seen her in Lowell the weekend before. Lesson learned. ~Kris~ The Singing NH Angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 May 2004 23:11:23 -0700 From: "Allison Crowe Music Mgmt" Subject: Re: [EDA] SJC: Happy Birthday Bob Dylan + Jewel's casino night May he stay forever young! Happy Birthday Zimmie! and, I hope Jewel had a good celebration - sounds like some drinkers in the casino audience weren't the best (but that article seems to base its contents on only one person - so, that's not the way to get a balanced view); thanks Ann for giving us an informed view ( : sorry it wasn't the best - but, maybe they'll book Jewel into a more suitable venue, and next time will be the greatest! cheers, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 07:39:43 -0400 From: Mbinda03@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: bad concert? hey angels! i must say i am a little relieved to know that hampton beach show wasnt exactly jewels best. i had front row & meet & greet for the show but was unable to attend cuz i was real sick. it was extremely depressing, but now reading all these posts that the crowd was drunk & rowdy & seeing the setlist make me feel a little better, i got to see her may 9 in lowell, ma & that was definately the better of the 2 shows! - -Matt ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 09:16:59 EDT From: GSBrumley@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC: Poltz Twice in One Week Just an FYI for Ohio/Indiana EDAs, Steve Poltz will be at the following this week: The Hideaway on Hillside (Indianapolis, IN) 5-26 10PM $15 Beachland Ballroom (Cleveland, OH) 5-29 8PM $14 And we plan to attend both shows, coming from Cincinnati, so any EDAs wanna hook up at the shows just let us know! I, personally, have been extraordinarily dissatisfied with Jewel and her management over the past several months, as I expressed a little while back on the list. However, though I did not attend the concert, I could clearly tell that the crowd simply misinterpreted a lot of what Jewel was saying. Jewel often likes to play with the crowd, and doing something like stopping in the middle of a popular song to make a quick quip is not uncharacteristic of Jewel, nor does it indicate that she was being sardonic in any way, as the article seems to imply. Additionally, the article seemed to suggest that Jewel was being short with the crowd by simply doing a quick yodel for her encore. As any fan would know, Jewel often yodels as an encore, and it was in no way meant to offend or disappoint the crowd. And as for the "anti-depressant" story, Jewel sometimes goes off on tangents while on-stage, and if she went on for too long, then that's hardly justification for crucifying her, as the article did. For this article to be somewhat objective, it should have included a quote from a satisfied fan, as well as an unsatisfied one. In addition, if what people are saying on the list is true, (that the crowd was extremely rowdy and unreceptive), then I can hardly see how such a scathing, slanted article was justified. My friend Stacey and I went to see her at Hardrock Live Orlando in April and were disappointed as well. Jewel seemed really off her game that night, we both left feeling like we had lost some respect for Jewel and thinking that her show during the Spirit Tour was much better. Here is my review for that show. Saturday I spent most of the day with Stacey. As an early graduation present, we went to Hardrock Live to see Jewel perform a solo acoustic show. Before the show we went to Hardrock Cafe for dinner. I don't go down there very often, the food was really good. I paid for dinner, don't think Stacey had expected I was going to pay for dinner as I'd already bought our tickets too. The opening act was a guy named Ryan Cabrera ( http://www.ryancabrera.com ). We were both impressed, I'm probably going to go buy the album when it comes out. He was a really good singer/entertainer. When Jewel came out she just started singing "Near You Always". Didn't greet the crowd until she'd completed 2 songs which was unusual. After an hour and a half, she did Chime bells as a encore. Somebody asked her a question, and that started more and eventually she ended up a question/answer session for a half hour. Some girl asked to sing with her, and it was a complete disaster. She 'auditioned' for Jewel by singing a verse of Amazing Grace and did a fantastic job but when she got on stage she confessed to not knowing a single Jewel song and she couldn't think of anything else to sing, not even a simple nursery rhyme. Stage fright anyone? Jewel told her Bob Dylan story. It goes like this, "before getting famous Jewel had a dream that she toured with the great Bob Dylan, at the end of the dream he hits on her. A few years later she got to tour with him, but he never hit on her so he must be gay." She told that story last night, then followed it up saying the people in New York hated said story, and she's not homophobic and her proof was that she wrote "Pieces of You". Until now I never really thought about it, but when she goes about writing a song like "Pieces of You" then tells that story, it makes her look stupid and hypocritical. Smooth move Jewel, I know your smarter then that. I've heard that story a few times, it's never made me laugh, and I like sarcastic humor. She's been using that story and all her other stories for years, anybody who has been to more then 1 show has heard most of her stories. She needs new stories like Britney Spears needs talent. Jewel, you've been doing tours for almost a decade and you've been singing for 20 years, surely you can come up with something new and interesting to say.
