Today's Subjects: ----------------- [EDA] SJC: Prince's new marketing strategy ["Stephen H." ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2004 18:57:18 +1000 From: "Stephen H." Subject: [EDA] SJC: Prince's new marketing strategy Don't know if you guys have heard about this... but Prince just released his latest album Musicology, and he has a very unusual marketing/cd sales strategy associated with the album. He launched his tour this week as well, and built into the ticket price is payment for a copy of the new album. So everyone that buys a ticket essentially buys a copy of the new CD as well, and they get distributed at the shows. Now, because Soundscan does count albums sold at concerts (so long as the artist management can be bothered to report the sales figures to the record company), the copies of Prince's new CD that are "sold" at each concert (don't forget each person automatically buys one) during any given week are counted towards his Billboard album chart position.. so he's gonna debut at #3 this week. Isn't that a fantastic idea?? It's an amazing way to get new music out to fans & move copies of your album... and it's all reflected on the album charts. VERY smart. I think this is something Jewel could consider in the future.... especially if she wanted to go independant. The reason Prince's strategy works for a major label (he recently signed to one again) is because his concerts are to massive crowds so the actual album sales become quite sizeable. But if Jewel wanted to release an album independantly, she could do it WITHOUT distribution, on her own steam, by building the cost of the record into the ticket price. She'd probably make a lot of money actually... So how's this for the reward of the year: Travel hundreds of miles every time the woman tours, pay those crazy ticket prices we've been talking about, and then, as luck would have it, she's going to make a stop in your little town! It's dreamy, I tell ya. The greater South Bend area, including Mishawaka, where I live, is home to < 200,000, depending on the time of year because of the number of college campuses we have (Notre Dame being the primary)... Anyway, I just bought 6 tix, 3rd row, we're actually going to have like a ...jewel party. Crazy. And more taping!
