Every show is so different night-to-night. "I'm alone on stage for two hours with an audience and you can't lose 'em," she continues. "You have to really stay in touch and keep them entertained with nothing but your guitar, and that takes a lot of skills. And I think if you did some sort of formatted generic set list you would just be completely leaving your audience behind." At present the plan only allows for sale of the discs at the venue on that night. "Right now we're going to be selling it like a merchandise piece," she says. Apparently, soon we will be able to buy soundboard recordings from all of her shows! Personally, I do not mind this at all, or the thought that it might damage the "angelfood spirit." I'd much prefer to have a high quality show recording of any show I want. I hope they'll be offered online! "I never do a set list," she says. "I talk a lot. Every show is so different night-to-night. "I'm alone on stage for two hours with an audience and you can't lose 'em," she continues. "You know, you can order it at the beginning of a show and pick it up afterwards. Beyond that, I don't know. There will probably be a demand for swapping shows and all that, but I'm not sure how that will work." The Whole Article: Jewel's current solo acoustic tour will likely influence the approach she'll take with her next album. The singer/songwriter tells Billboard.com she's planning to make "a really simple, kind of lo-fi record" to follow up last year's "0304," which took her in an unexpected dance/pop direction. "I've started [working on new material]," she says during a tour break she's spending in Texas. "I always write. I'm fairly prolific. I'm probably going to do a pretty simple record this next year. I've just been touring solo and have a lot of material I'd like to do [suited to that]." That as-yet-unscheduled next album will be the last under her deal with longtime home Atlantic Records, which is in flux in the wake of an Edgar Bronfman Jr.-led acquisition of the label's parent company, Warner Music Group. Jewel says she'll "have to see what the offer is" before deciding if she'll remain with the label or decide to work with another company. "I'm in a really unique position," she says. "I have been since my first record. You know, I lived in a car and I was broke and I sold 11 million records on my first record [laughs]. I'm not broke anymore and I have the freedom to do whatever the heck I like." Armed with just a guitar, Jewel will resume touring April 6 in Charlotte, N.C., and has plans to be on the road in the United States through July. She's been playing solo shows since the sudden death in September of T Bone Hannon, he bassist in her touring band. "Losing T Bone was just such a shock," she says. "You know, it's such a family having a band, especially as great a band as I've had. I just couldn't imagine putting it together different. I've just really wanted to be alone on stage now and I work things out really differently when I'm alone on stage. It's a really different experience for me, a lot more cathartic, and it just felt really good to do." Playing solo has also given her a chance to present the songs on "0304" in a different light. "I've actually really enjoyed doing these songs acoustic, because there seems to have been so much fuss over them," she explains. "I think people, especially journalists, forgot that these are real songs. They're still folk songs -- the beginning, a middle and an end -- and they tell a story and they're very lyric driven. And they work without a beat; they never relied on a beat to be the hook. "I think it helps give new meaning to the song when they hear them acoustic and hear that it's the same thing I've always done," she says, laughing. Jewel is also excited about her first concert DVD, "Live at Humphrey's By the Bay" (Eagle Vision), released Tuesday. Recorded in 2001 in San Diego, the disc features the artist performing 13 songs, including such well-known hits as "Who Will Save Your Soul," "Hands" and "You Were Meant For Me." Also included are three bonus tracks recorded elsewhere on that tour in support of that year's "This Way" album, as well as an interview, behind-the-scenes tour footage, a photo gallery and discography. "I think anything that can get you directly to a fan without a lot of middlemen is great. I prefer it," Jewel says of the DVD. "I think I'm better live. I think my personality comes across a lot more, it's a lot more three-dimensional format [than an album]. And, really, rarely does a fan ever get to hear a person talk directly without an outside editor with some kind of agenda working on it. For this, I just think it's a really pure format. "That was my first night with a new band, literally our first show, so there were a lot of times, just personally, where I was going by the seat of my pants," she remembers. "We all were!" For now, she has no plans beyond her U.S. tour, which she has structured to suit both her fans and herself. "I've tried to tour in a way that kind of saves me, she says. "I've been working for a couple of records straight now. I do two weeks on where I'm doing 12 shows in 12 days, 12 cities -- no nights off. And then I take two weeks off to be able to do other stuff. That way I'm just not touring constantly, every day." As for her appearance in a recent television spot for L'Oreal's Feria hair color products, Jewel says fans shouldn't read too much into it. "It just seemed like a lot of fun," she says. "I'm 29 and I thought it was time to take advantage of some different opportunities. Really, I just thought it would be a good time, and it was a whole lot of fun." So, does this signal some sort of career change? "Oh no," she says, laughing, with the same honesty that comes across in her performances.
